Leo Shane III is tweeting from a bizarre scene on the Mall in Washington. Veterans from all over the country had come to the World War II Memorial to visit it. That memorial is normally unmanned, as it has no store or other amenities and needs no staff. But it had been barricaded. The veterans, some of whom surely stormed beaches to fight the Nazis or Imperial Japan in their youth, were not about to be stopped.

Park Police stopped trying to block anyone from visiting the normally unmanned memorial.

Why did the Park Police believe that any response was needed? Who ordered those barricades to be put in place? At what cost? Why?

Your explanation makes no sense. The rationale behind closing museums and such is that with no one being paid to staff them they have to simply lock the doors. In this case we have a place that normally has no staff and they CREATED a staff to barricade it. Basically, in order to make the point that the government has no money they spent money that they normally wouldn't.

Your benefit of the doubt is badly misplaced in this case. This wasn't the government trying to prevent vandalism. This was an overreaching government led by an imperial president going out of its way to punish the citizens it's supposed to be serving. Shame on them for trying and kudos to the veterans for not taking it.

It's too bad the park police didn't act like the bully boy fed police. Some footage of these elderly vets getting maced and cuffed would have spelled Doom for Obama and his shutdown.

I'm thinking a Patriot Guard / Rolling Thunder escort for the WWII vets to visit their own memorial. Like to see the Park Police try to barricade that!

Is it true the entire EPA is deemed "non-essential"?

Salute to the WW2 veterans in this group, and everywhere they still live.

Seems like a great time for We The People to barricade Air Farce One. If there is no funding for visitors to see the an otherwise unguarded and unmanned memorial how can this clown prez get the money to fuel The People's plane? You know damned well it isn't going to come out of his pocket.

Well, apparently mounted police is now defending the Memorial from any marauding WWII veterans ...
That'll show them (and us)!

It's an executive branch decision to call in the mounted police.

This generation of politicians sure better not try to screw with the "greatest" generation.
Here in Florida, it is not unusual for the press to report that some 20 year old punk tried to rob an 80 year old Marine vet, and found himself on the wrong side of a beat down.

Today's mull: With the government shutdown having started are the golf courses at which President Obama likes to chill, such as at Fort Belvoir, going to be closed? Nope: http://blog.billlawrenceonline.com/2013/10/01/fort-belvoir-golf-course-closed.aspx

Have pity! You can't expect essential services like golf courses to be shut down.

so with a shut down, there was money to pay to put up barricades?

Now that was a useful waste of tax payer funds.
