Dick Durbin just has your best interests at heart, First Amendment. He says so himself in an editorial for the Chicago Sun-Times.

The media informs the public and holds government accountable. Journalists should have reasonable legal protections to do their important work. But not every blogger, tweeter or Facebook user is a “journalist.” While social media allows tens of millions of people to share information publicly, it does not entitle them to special legal protections to ignore requests for documents or information from grand juries, judges or other law enforcement personnel.

A journalist gathers information for a media outlet that disseminates the information through a broadly defined “medium” — including newspaper, nonfiction book, wire service, magazine, news website, television, radio or motion picture — for public use. This broad definition covers every form of legitimate journalism.

“Legitimate journalism.” What an interesting phrase, coming from the senator who hails from what may be the most corrupt state in the union.

What qualifies as “legitimate journalism” or a “news website” in Durbin’s mind? Anyone can tweet something that constitutes news and the broadcast of which can be deemed journalism. Tweets of ordinary citizens molested by the TSA have become news stories. As we’ve seen repeatedly over the past several decades, so-called journalists can bury stories harmful to powerful politicians or pet causes. Newsweek buried the Clinton-Lewinsky affair; Matt Drudge exposed it on what was then pretty much a personal web site. Which was the real journalism outlet? The mainstream media avoided covering the Gosnell trial as much as they could, while sites like LifeNews moved the story nationally. Lila Rose’s investigations of Planned Parenthood have exposed lies and abuse that the mainstream media pretends are not happening at all. Who are the real journlists, James O’Keefe or Lawrence O’Donnell?

Where Durbin’s logic leads is a shield law for journalists in exchange for government licensing who has the right to get under that shield and call themselves a journalist. Government control of “journalism,” in other words.

The 1st Amendment makes no mention either of journalists or the media. It refers to the press. Viewed in its historical context then, bloggers and other users of alternate media are the press. In 1775 the British marched on Lexington and Concord with two goals. One was to confiscate munitions at an armory. But the other was to capture the printing press owned by Samuel Adams from which issued forth a stream of revolutionary pamphlets.

So, when the 1st Amendment refers to freedom of the press, it refers to the freedom for any individual to disseminate their ideas to others and has nothing to do with government approved 'journalists.' Senator Durbin would be the object of men with a bucket of hot tar and a bag of feathers for saying something like he did in revolutionary times and it would be a good lesson to the acolytes of the Baby Tyrant if Durbin got that treatment today.

Plagiarism charges can be added to Sen.Durbin's MB inspired government deciding who qualifies now as a journalist. No more human resources departments- no more very expensive journalism studies- or TV bosses deciding what kind of reporters they want. Did Senator Durbin ask Al-Jazeera? The plagiarism is straight from Jordan (The Hashemite Kingdom)- Jordan g'ment blocked 254 news websites in Jordan due to lack of license. The Law of June 2nd- specifies all news sites (electronic too)must register and obtain a license from the Jordanian government.Checking Editors- government right to censor content and hold journalists liable for contents posted on a web page. Hardly all the people in Illinois can be that totalitarian bent.

"Dick Durbin wants government to decide who qualifies as a real journalist." Really? Does that mean we the people can determine who qualifies as a Constitution loving Senator? I'm pretty sure Durbin doesn't come close (I'd use his first name but I'm afraid my comment would be removed).

Government control of journalism ...what does that remind me of? Oh yeah - that would be right up there in the pantheon of self-dealing conflicts of interest such as unionized government employees, and Department of Justice internal investigations of itself, to name a few.

"The Press" is the ability to produce mass printings of information on paper

'The Press' is NOT fascist journOlist companies beholden to government dictate

Those that protect America's enemies better be prepared to die when the collapse happens. Protecting the people that engineered the end is tantamount to the people they are saving from their proper fate

"...The media informs the public and holds government accountable..."

If there were any cosmic justice in the world we would today be reading of Dick Durbin's death. From choking on his own words.
How a creature like him can write words like that and still be able to look at himself in the mirror is beyond me.
