The blame for the myriad problems resulting from the failure to enforce immigration laws rests at the feet of the federal government.

Congress has now embarked upon a long-overdue effort to fix our nation’s legal and illegal immigration policies. While I applaud the sentiment which recognizes our immigration system isn’t up to the task, is utterly dysfunctional, and is unfair to both Americans and immigrants alike, we are in this situation because of the failure of our elected leaders to follow the very laws they expect us to obey.

For decades, both parties looked the other way; their neglect ravaged citizens and immigrants alike. Did they think nearly half a century’s worth of dereliction of duty wouldn’t have dire consequences? Families are now split — some are citizens, some are not. Children brought here as infants identify as Americans but lack the status to back that up. And as always is the case with government, Washington lays the consequence of their failures on the American taxpayer.

When either party has held a majority in Congress while controlling the White House, neither made an honest effort to bring the southern border under operational control. The current effort to right the ship is happening in an open manner, with the Judiciary Committee accepting debate and considering all amendments. That being said, I’m troubled that Senator Rubio has chosen to not hear the concerns and suggestions of conservative Latino groups, despite striking me as the only player who truly wants to find a workable solution.

The legislative deck is stacked against security-minded Americans. If the Senate produces a proposal which ignores security, it will be up to the House to rectify this deficiency. That’s when we will learn whether or not President Obama and his party are truly interested in a compromise: judging by their actions and rhetoric thus far, I’ll wager Mr. Obama will work to pay off labor and torpedo reform. This will also have the added bonus, for Obama, of creating a political issue to tar Republicans with in the 2014 midterms.

Throughout the coming debate, every citizen should hold their politicians’ feet to the fire regarding U.S. citizenship and its value. In the push “to get something done,” our elected leaders conspire to cheapen what it means to be an American. As we have seen with other government programs, the tendency is to lower standards to achieve a desired result on paper — this cannot be allowed to happen to the criteria for U.S. citizenship.

I hope our leaders choose to hold American citizenship in the highest regard by making immigrants who seek to be Americans work for it. Who knows — the newly minted Americans, many of whom come from oppressed left-wing nations, may set examples for their new countrymen and remind us how precious our liberty and freedoms are.

This is a bold face lie. They are doing nothing of the kind. In fact, they are doing the opposite.

Agree with "OldSchoolConsrvtive." If you want to save the boat from sinking, you have to stop the flooding first or everything else is for naught. Giving illegals in the country anything first, even if its only hope, will only encourage more to flood over our open borders.

The failure of past administrations and legislatures to keep their promises and secure the border is exactly why I and many others want nothing to do with "comprehensive reform". Secure the border FIRST, then let's discuss a path to citizenship.

It is completely disingenuous to lump legal and illegals together and refer to them as simply "immigrants." One group, like mine and my wife's parents followed the law and came here LEGALLY. The other group absolutely knew they were breaking the established law by coming here ILLEGALLY. The bottom line to any "immigration reform" will be to, once again, reward lawlessness. Oh, and by the way, the immigration laws were updated with new enforcement and border security provisions in the 1986 amnesty - a fact that constantly gets overlooked. The truth is that our government REFUSED to enforce the very law they shoved down our throats.

Now 25+ years later they are expecting us to eat the same $hit sandwich. Are we really THAT stupid?

What does it mean that a commentator today characterises him/herself as "conservative" or "liberal" or republican or democrat? OR Latino, or black, or Afro-, Asian-american or whatever? Example the author of this article as "Conservative Latino".

Have Americans now become whatever floats your boat to describe themselves?

What happened to that now unfashiionable olde tyme description relevant particularly to the article celebrities on today's Olympus in showbiz, politics, education and media decry?

That old tyme description that said all that needed to be said, and was understood world wide. Admired AND envied world-wide. Those peoples now become for the erstwhile Speaker of the House of Congress, those peoples' Congress, astro-turf?

Astroturf. An artificial product that can be walked on and used wherever and for whatever without any signs of resistance or wear.

Can we imagine after a half century of education/brainwashing at the hands of the "best and brightest" as Americans anything but THE ultimate evil in the world?

Imagine that before that brainwashing Americans were known and PROUD with gtod reason to be known simply as American? And even American with a Capitol A?

How the America and American haters must be crowing at their success in little by little, with premission and encouragement of these peoples, the ersthwhile Americans, in destroying everything American is and stands for.
Destruction by mutation of the DNA and its double helix of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution.

As American haters Now finally outed by their present commander in his promosed INTENTION to fundamentally transform this nation. This America which he volunteered during campaign for the job of Executive to be "ashamed".

Is it a religion they pursue. If not, why then do some, many? of their disciples call BH Obama their present standard bearer their Messiah? And why their constinuous animus to that religion on which the principles of this America was built??

BH Obama their Messiah. When not their New Kennedy? JF or Edward, or Robert, or all the Kennedys and their clones the Clintons?

Presumptive heir/ess to the throne of Camelot that well known paragon of truth, honour, respect for the dignity and value of and compassion for their astro-turf, the common people, with respect for the agreed social contract with its laws that limit govenment intrusions into the lives of those astro-turf. A serious contender for many, too many?. Americans for the hightest civic honour in their gift.

The argument is NOT about immigration.
Those people who panel it as such know it is nothing of the sort. It is merely one more action to test the resolve of American, with that capitol A.

To DEMAND, and not go away until the demands are met, the guardians of their rights in Congress, Judiciary and Executive do the jobs they were hired to do.

To uphold and defend the Constitution, the IDENTITY of these United States.

Not allow further sucesses in just another tactic masquerading as debate in their gurrilla war against the American Peoples.

Don't worry about illegal immigration because after Obama is done destroying the country none will want to come here, anyway.

What nobody has bothered to do is go out and ask these illegal freeloaders (yes - they are!) if they WANT to become citizens of the USA. Maybe they do - maybe they don't. Ask them if they are willing to 'come out from the shadows' and start paying taxes - my guess is they don't. They have it too damned good as things stand now. Most illegals around here in the Columbia Basin area - eastern Washington State - work for $10-12 per hour under the table meaning no taxes are paid - work 10-12 hours per day 5-6 days per week. Doing the math thats about $600 per week - CASH! The GF/wife and kids are on public assistance which brings in another $1000 or so per month depending on how many kids - free medical - dental - supplemental food stamps - and all the free education the kids can soak up. Many of the women that are on public assistance work 2-3 or more days per week. Its illegal to do so in Washington state but try catching them - it ain't easy - and probably nobody is looking to catch them.

The illegals may not have much education but they aren't stupid - and they know a good thing when they have it - why the hell would they want to throw a monkey wrench into it?

This bill is political pandering plain and simple - and Rubio is the worst of the bunch. It seems he's forgotten his own words "the borders will be secured FIRST" before the rest of the provisions of this bill can be engaged.

My my - how things do change. But don't look for illegals to come streaming from the 'shadows' if this 'abortion' becomes law. Ain't going to happen.

You may be on to something. This and most other proposals for immigration reform are predicated on assumptions about how the illegals will behave when given the opportunity to become citizens after various penalties, waiting periods and other exactions. Maybe they just want to work tax free and save the money for an eventual return to their home country or send it home now to mama and los hijos, and want nothing to do with gringo politics especially if they have to pay for the experience.

"The blame for the myriad problems resulting from the failure to enforce immigration laws rests at the feet of the federal government."

You are wrong, sir. The blame rests at the feet of the American people.

The real problem is NOT security. The real problem is "we give free stuff to people". This problem exists regardless of your status as a citizen.

Stop giving people taxpayer-funded "free stuff", and the problem will begin to solve itself. Only those willing to bust their butts will come here. Those are the folks we want, anyway.

Learn history. Prior to FDR, America did not require passports for international travel except during times of war. A wall or fence along our border? That's insane. As a free American, I should be able to literally step across the border, and only be concerned about what sovereign Mexico might do to me, not what my own country would do.

Like most Constitutionalists, I don't care if a human being with a strong work ethic wants to escape their third-world hell-hole. I welcome them to try. I also welcome them to work their butts off when they get here, and if they succeed I will respect them for it.

I live south and west of I-10 in southern New Mexico and this border is pretty much W I D E open here. Once in a while I will see and hear of a border patrol agent making an arrest/capture of someone who violated the border, but then they just get sent back to their 'precious' Mexico. If a nation refuses to secure and enforce its own borders, then How can it remain a sovereign nation? The border needs to be locked down tight just like the old Berlin Wall. Its not just Mexicans running north to America, but what about those others violating our nation, like Chinese, Russian and others who wish to do harm. Other nations secure and enforce their borders, why is it so damned difficult to do it here?

Legislators, judges and executives of these USA fail to keep their promises, fail to uphold the laws of the nation because they can. They are in principle, law and function NOT leaders, Not bosses, NOT princes whatever quasi royal status and privileges are perks of their jobs.

They are "honourables" ONLY because they enjoined to act honourably, and that means uphold and defend the Rights of the Householders. As Representatives of the citizens.

That however requires the citizens to be responsible for that representation. We The People, whoever and whatever that is, have for a very long time given over the rights and direction of our nation to our servants. Failed to require they do the job compliant with their contract. That contract is Not full of legalese, managementese, psychobaloney or other high sounding words and phrases.

That contract is a freely taken oath to "Uphold and Defend the Constitution of the USA". Citizens, We The People, have not demanded each and every one of the representatives to do their job or be summarily dismissed.

When those responsible for the Household don't demand their servants do the jobs to contract the servants do what THEY want to do. And for a very long time they have done just that and still kept their jobs. Anthony Robbins has a catchword: "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got".
