Thanks Sephen. This might mean that my painting of Hitler on velvet might be worth something after all. It's a splendid piece with his eyes upraised, his little dictator fists clenched in front of a 30's era microphone.

I was at NYU earning a master's degree in art history, focusing on the Modernists, when Basquiat was the toast of the town. Although by necessity I'd bought into a lot of bu!!$&it at the time, even then I could see that his success was due mostly to the Art World's weapons-grade "nostalgie de la boue."

Basquiat was Andy Warhol's final creation, a manufactured "artist" whose work was just as artificial and shallow as Warhol's Campbell's soup cans, Brillo boxes and celebrity portraits. He was presented as art's wild child and he painted a heroin addict's idea of what a wild child would paint. His death, like that of Warhol victim Edie Sedgewick, was part of the equation. Andy got off on it.

Andy Warhol was the Barack Obama of the art world. The art world has had to live with the debasement he brought to it for decades. America will have to live with Obama's debasement far longer, probably forever.

I always thought heroin inspired art would have a darker tone.
