“Tolerance” means license to hate people you don’t even know and who may swoop in trying to save your job.

At a Los Angeles Times in-house awards ceremony a week ago, columnist Steve Lopez addressed the elephant in the room.

Speaking to the entire staff, he said, “Raise your hand if you would quit if the paper was bought by Austin Beutner’s group.” No one raised their hands.

“Raise you hand if you would quit if the paper was bought by Rupert Murdoch.” A few people raised their hands.

Facing the elephant trunk-on, “Raise your hand if you would quit if the paper was bought by the Koch brothers.” About half the staff raised their hands.

That’s an indictment against the Los Angeles Times. It’s not as if the paper that is still hiding the Khalidi tapes can make any claim to ethics.

Actual number of staffers who would quit if the Koch brothers took over (meaning they'd have to find a job in another industry, like, ummmmmmm): 0.

Some local conservative folks are hoping and likely praying the Koch Brothers buy the Tribune group. No doubt that better than half of the current staff here locally would depart. I can't describe the degree of shock newspaper readers in Maryland would experience if the truth of the matters and all matters newsworthy suddenly arrived as part of their daily fare.
