Don’t look now, and don’t look for a play-by-play in the mainstream media, but there’s a civil war brewing in the Democratic Party. And it’s a war over guns.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s “assault” weapons ban is playing so badly that it failed to attract 40 votes in the Senate. The Democrats have 55 votes in the Senate. A large part of the Democratic caucus is therefore not on board with the ban, which President Obama publicly supports.

We know that Feinstein’s ban is so weak because, Tuesday, the Democrats’ leader in the Senate, Harry Reid, told us it was. He didn’t have to publicly note that the ban has attracted fewer than 40 votes. But he did. The ban has been scuttled as part of the bill, but may be attached as an amendment, which will be easier for Reid to kill.

The Hill reports today that other Obama-backed gun control measures are weakening.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has decided the federal assault weapons ban will not be a part of the base bill, and warned Tuesday an expansion of background checks to cover private sales might not make the cut either.

Instead, a bipartisan measure cracking down on straw purchasing and illegal trafficking of firearms will serve as the foundation of firearms legislation.

Both of these make sense even to staunch Second Amendment advocates. So we’re down now to the only common sense parts of the bill, which would also help fight crime while not infringing on any law-abiding citizen’s Second Amendment rights, and attract bipartisan support. Good, right?

Not if you’re Dianne Feinstein. She still wants a vote on her ban and is lining Harry Reid up in her sights if she doesn’t get one.

This is very important to me and I’m not going to lay down and play dead. I think the American people have said in every single public poll that they support this kind of legislation. It’s aimed to protect children, to protect schools and malls. It’s aimed to dry up the supply of these over time. And it came out on a 10-8 vote of the Judiciary Committee. Not to give me a vote on this would be a major betrayal of trust.

Well, get ready to be betrayed. Harry Reid is pretty good at that.

While I agree with tdiinva that Feinstien cannot pass her bill now, because she lacks the votes, I think what other commenters are trying to say is that the lack of votes will merely slow her down, not stop her. Remember, the Democrats know how to play the game by inches. Obamacare was chock-full of "to be determined by the (DHHS) Secretary" regulations. All that needs to happen is for the Senate to pass a bill that allows the head of the BATF or FBI to "determine" the proper gun-control regulations.

Reporter question for Sen. Feinstein: Senator, Since Senator Reid has betrayed you and since he has shown that he doesn't care about children, will you vote for him to be majority leader again? Would his failure to propose a budget for 3 years influence your decision?

I agree with tdinva. It's like some people are ascribing supernatural political skillz to the Democrat party. Well, people used to do that with Napoleon and Rommel, but somebody eventually beat them. We'll eventually beat the Dems - again.

Kabuki Theater...a finely tuned Stradivarius!
Remember, Incrementalism is the name of the Progressive New Left Activist's game. GUN CONTROL WILL appear as an amendment on some innocuous legislation, voted on and passed in "the still of the night!" There's even UN involvement, magazine capacity, ammo, etc. USA's Second Amendment is under frontal attack!!!! Sec. Kerry will see to this, he hates America.
America and Americans are witnessing the unfolding of "top down/bottom up and inside out" strategy as regards "Gun Control."
Top down= Executive and Legislative branches of We The Elite People of culture of corruption in Washington DC acting in tandem to effect (control)legislation unpopular to ALL US citizenry....Gun control.
Bottom up= Executive and Legislative branches of state governments acting in tandem to effect (control) legislation unpopular to ALL states (Colorado) citizenry....Gun Control.
Inside Out = National and State Executive and Legislative branches of government acting in tandem to dry-up every and all sources of weapons and ammunition both domestic and international thru: background checks, waiting periods, description of weaponry(automatic, fully/semi automatic), licensing, level 5 or 4, manufacturing et al...Gun Control.
We The People's national and state governments are at war with America and Americans. God Bless America and Americans. Pray for Her, She's on life support and desperately needs CPR. Be vigilant! Be aware!

Do you have S.F.B? She doesn't 60 votes. She doesn't have 50 votes. Explain how it passes. How could it be an innocuous amendment to a bill? Do you think some Republican staffer won't notice it? I am getting tired of this Daily Kos/DU style posts.

Since you don't have the power of reason and you can't seem to distinguish their pattern they follow maybe this will help.

One person with S.F.B. recommending another person with S.F.B.

You need to learn how to count to 60. Come back when you learn. Do you even own a gun?

Several, how many times do have to see a formula work before you can predict it?

It's a trap. The Democrats have done this before. They are putting on a show of disunity now, but they will come up with a "compromise" plan that is in fact only slightly less onerous than the worst plans, like Difi's, and push it as reasonable and they will all back it. That way the RINO's and other idiots will vote for it too in order to seem bipartisan.

And I suggest you reread my post. As I stated, the Democrats have pushed very onerous bills before that they know won't pass then back off a bit to get enough votes, wait a bit and push again, steadily inching toward the goal. They might not have the mystical 60 votes now, but they can pare their objectives back enough to win another stepping stone toward them.

That is how the Democrats win. They play the long game where most Republicans can't see two seconds into the future, and can't stick together for half that long.

I read your post and it still nonsense. There is no bill that includes an AWB, magazine limits or gun registry that gets 60 votes. There is no Republican Senator who gains anything for voting for a bill like that. I guess you don't know much about how Congress works. The Republicans don't need to compromise. They have won this battle. You only compromise to prevent something worse like an automatic tax increase for everybody.

People like were predicting that the Republicans would fold on sequestor and it didn't happen. If Schumer want's a background check bill he will have to lower his expectations.

Last attempt here: Read the parable of the Camel's Nose and/or the Hopping Toad. Then look back at legislative history over the last 70 years or so.

Inappropriate analogy. This isn't a camel's nose problem. The support or opposition to gun control is absolute at the Congressional level. Unless the Democrats get 60 Senators and the House no bill will ever pass. Until you understand why and when legislators compromise you will never understand the problem.

There's 55 Demo senators and DIFI only got 40 votes yes lined up? Sounds like she had more problems with 15 Demo senators than with Reid.

Maybe DIFI needs to look at the number of Demo senators up for reelection in majority Red states in 2014. Viola, roughly 15.

Yup, math is hard.

It's a trick to get the capacity part through, they'll come back later with an amendment for the rest.

Harry Reid is backed by the NRA and that's why he "tanked" Lady Frankenstein's bill. He appears in the monthly magazines and has supported gun ranges in Nevada, and that is one of the reasons he is still Senator. He is pro-2d amendment, suprising for an otherwise mindless liberal.
