Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey has joined the amnesty-for-security group, arguing that the Republicans must “cut a deal” with the Democrats to get border security in exchange for amnesty for illegal aliens already in the US. He lauds Sen. Lindsay Graham, who has been pushing amnesty for years while allowing that he plans to “tell the bigots to shut up.” Those “bigots” are those who oppose blanket amnesty. He further argues that because the GOP still holds the House, the party still has “leverage” to get a better deal.
To those proposing an amnesty-for-security solution, I offer a simple question: Are the Democrats of today more or less trustworthy than they were 25 years ago?
If you think the Democrats are more honest now than they were in the Tip O’Neill era, then go ahead and cut a deal with them.
But if you think that the Democrats of the Obama-Pelosi-Reid era are less honest than the leaders of their party were 25 years ago, roughly the last time the United States undertook an amnesty deal that was supposed to solve the border security problem, then you might want to slow down on cutting any deals with them. They didn’t live up to their end of several deals in the O’Neill era. What evidence exists that the current crop of Democrats will live up to their end of any deals struck now? Where is the evidence that they aren’t using the porous border to put Republicans on the defensive and create more Democratic voters?
It seems perfectly obvious to some of us that the Democrats are offering Republicans advice and deals now, after defeating us in an election, because they have something other than the best interests of the GOP in mind. It’s just as obvious that on this particular issue, folks like Lindsay Graham’s hearts might be in the right place, but their heads are elsewhere.

My whole concept of the Democrats has been shaken. I need to lie down.
Add to the list of those who do not have the best interests of Republicans at heart: Ed Morrissey.
And add to that list: Hispanics -

Here is the voting pattern of Hispanics for the last 30 years:
–1980 Jimmy Carter, 56% Ronald Reagan, 35% +21
–1984 Walter Mondale, 61% Ronald Reagan, 37% +24
–1988 Michael Dukakis, 69% George H.W. Bush, 30% +39
–1992 Bill Clinton, 61% George H.W. Bush, 25% +36
–1996 Bill Clinton, 72% Bob Dole, 21% +51
–2000 Al Gore, 62% George W. Bush, 35% +27
–2004 John Kerry, 58% George W. Bush, 40% +18
–2008 Barack Obama, 67% John McCain, 31% +36
–2012 Barack Obama, 71% Mitt Romney, 27% +44
30 years folks. Do these people appear to you to be Republicans?
Latinos are Democrats in Hispanic clothing. You want to curry favor with these folks, they will take you for everything you are willing to give up and then they will shiv you in the back. By voting for a Democrat.
Wake up.
– million more will join the 20 million already here — and that’s just from Mexico.
Have you been to Miami Florida lately?
The locales now refer to the city in Cuba as ‘Little Havana’!
“It’s just as obvious that on this particular issue, folks like Lindsay Graham’s hearts might be in the right place, but their heads are elsewhere.”
Possibly up their nether regions? Amnesty and promises of security are not going to change the situation, we all know that. Why do we keep playing these games of tit-for-tat. Until the nation as a whole determines that enough is enough, the game will go. The borders will stay open, the illegal immigrants will continue to come here, and the Democrats will continue to benefit from the influx of the poor, the halt, the lame, the felonious, and the like. Republicans are playing a no-sum game: They will gain nothing and possibly lose ground, day after day, month after month, and year after year.
The flow can be staunched, and the illegals can be deported if the county so desires. History has already shown us this can be done. It would not be pleasant, it would not be pretty, but it can be done. We can do that or continue down the path we’re on.
I have worked hard for the meager lifestyle that I now have; I do not wish to see it frittered away – little by little – by a government that continues to take more and more for its own benefit. I do not wish to see my freedoms compromised day in and day out, which is the course we are now following. Little by little we are becoming less free and less prosperous.
These trends will only end when we say enough is enough.
A deal with the Democrats means that you give and they take.
Why is this even news? Why? Why? Why? Who the heck is in charge. Seriously, this is ridiculous. Must Republicans always and forever follow the lead of the Democrats. We have a global economy in meltdown and a are losing a war against Islamofacism that is destined to go nuclear – yes nuclear. And Republicans want to spend time on amnesty for illegal aliens.
A conspiracy theorist might think that amnesty, adultery and accounting were important priorities. All smoke and mirrors to disguise some leftist utopian reordering of global society.
Within the next four years there is a better than 50-50 chance that the current global monetary policies will collapse and we will enter a real global economic depression defined as multiple years of massive 15%+ contractions of GDP. I would also suggest that there is a better than 50-50 chance that there will be nuclear war in the Middle East.
Yes, lets address amnesty. Clueless Republican leadership. Seriously, it is time for a leadership revolt. A conservative caucus in the Congress needs to materialize and fight against the current leadership. Who are these “leaders.”
Questions that get to the core, IMHO:
What value is there on American citizenship?
What value is there in the rule of law? Why are illegals being rewarded for violating our laws?
Your questions are racist and xenophobic.
Yes, of course that’s an absurd thing to say. But the sad, unavoidable fact is that something like half the country actually believes it. The Democrats have successfully erased the line between legal and illegal immigration, and many (perhaps even most) people can’t distinguish between the two.
This fight, like so many others, was lost decades ago when Conservatives simply ceded education and entertainment to the Left.
The question I’d like to see asked is…
What did they do to Mexico?
Can we stop acting like these people don’t have a homeland? They have a massive country with endless miles of tropical coastline, ancient ruins; and they have oil! If you can’t make opportunity out of oil then you’re a hopelessly retarded culture!
They screwed up their country and they’re here to do the same thing to mine.
They’re idiots. Send them home, then dig a mile-wide moat and fill it with flaming tar and robot alligators.
Sure the Republicans can take a deal – they ain’t called the party of stupid for nothing.
It’s almost like they WANT to be the permanent minority!
Any national level republican who thinks all of these Mexicans coming into the US, after being thoroughly marinated in Mexican politics and ideas of social justice and La Raza’s claims regarding their mythical Aztlan and spending a good portion of their lives being envious of the US standard of living AND realizing that if they can just make it here and/or have a baby on US soil and that they can vote themselves benefits out of the US treasury, well – that republican needs to be run out of town on a rail as he is too stupid to hold office.
Perhaps he and Todd Akin can share a taxi?
The Democrats want cheap votes. The GOP wants cheap labor.
They both get what they want. The rest of us get the shaft. Unless and until we vote ALL of them out, we will get exactly what we deserve: the shaft.
Those Republicans Proposing Shamnesty: ‘Hey, if it’s inevitable, you might as well bend over and relax you sphincters.’
What is the GOP plan other than Nay to everything? Theres certainly no plan listed in the official 2012 GOP platform to hang your hat on. All I have really heard are the opposing views of self deportation and ship an estimated 11M illegal immigrants back to the homeland of their geneology.
The 2011 GOP House Bill H.R. 1299 directed the Democrat Secretary of Homeland Security to submit to Congress within 180 days of enactment a comprehensive strategy for gaining operational control of the international borders between U.S. ports of entry within five years. “The Committee believes that the Department of Homeland Security should produce a comprehensive and coherent plan to gain and maintain operational control, as defined by the Secure Fence Act of 2006, to guide future investments for the Nation’s border security efforts.”
Obviously, the GOP House cannot define what a secure border means much less how it could be implemented or any degree of success guaranteed. In other words when it comes to securing the borders the GOP punts the ball to somebody else to figure out.
The few GOP’ers who have a different approach or willingness to negotiate to some mutual center position are seemingly are demonized so again, what is the official GOP plan the3y are willing to stand behind in consensus?
Reagan tried amnesty under the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act.
In exchange for tighter border security and a crackdown on hiring illegal aliens, Reagan agreed to a general amnesty for any illegal alien that was in the US (illegally) prior to 1982.
What the country got, under the democrat led congress, was an amnesty – as Reagan agreed to – but at the same time the border was never tightened up and those hiring illegals were never cracked down upon.
Furthermore, those illegals eventually became US citizens – and promptly voted democrat.
Why in seven shades of hades should republicans try any kind of amnesty ever again?
They are not going to vote for republicans, they are going to want their cut out of the national treasury, and they are going to back socialist ideals in every election.
At this point in our history, no deal is better than any deal we could get in this political environment with a democrat crowd even further emboldened to ignore the rule of law where it suits them.
Okay…we want to deal with the Devil, here’s our price.
1) A secure border. Fenced, surveilled and patrolled by agents, and fully funded for 25 years.
2) Revocation of all Federal funds from states that offer illegal immigrants’ children “in-state tuition” at their schools.
3) The same for all so-called “Sanctuary Cities”.
4) A Federal Voter ID law, requiring State or Federal issued photo ID to vote, and a purple finger to indicate those who HAVE voted. Also, should ANY accredited polling observers be expelled from the precinct, ALL of that precincts votes are suspended and not counted.
All of these laws to be passed and signed and funding where needed earmarked BEFORE any deal is discussed.
Of course this won’t happen since the Rockefellerian RINOs have a vested interest in cheap labor…but its what SHOULD be preconditioned.
Funny how the two states that claim world class economies are the same two states that willingly violate the immigrations laws the most. One proudly and publically and one behind denial. Ever hear of all the border crossing schools in Texas?
