Freedom Works has compiled a list of companies that have announced layoffs this week following the re-election of Barack Obama.
It should be pointed out that the planning that goes into downsizing a business can take several weeks or months. However, it is not unreasonable to assume that companies are responding to the increased costs associated with complying with Obamacare and other administration regulations.
It is impossible to know if there would have been fewer or no layoffs if Romney had been elected. But perhaps the certainty that Obamacare will survive crystallized the thinking of these businesses and forced them to go ahead with their plans.
A few of the companies that have announced job cuts:
Welch Allyn
Welch Allyn, a company that manufactures medical diagnostic equipment in central New York, announced in September that they would be laying off 275 employees, or roughly 10% of their workforce over the next three years. One of the major reasons discussed for the layoffs was a proactive response to the Medical Device Tax mandated by the new healthcare law.
Dana Holding Corp.
As recently as a week ago, a global auto parts manufacturing company in Ohio known as Dana Holding Corp., warned their employees of potential layoffs, citing “$24 million over the next six years in additional U.S. health care expenses”. After laying off several white collar staffers, company insiders have hinted at more to come. The company will have to cover the additional $24 million cost somehow, which will likely equate to numerous cuts in their current workforce of 25,500 worldwide.
Stryker
One of the biggest medical device manufacturers in the world, Stryker will close their facility in Orchard Park, New York, eliminating 96 jobs in December. Worse, they plan on countering the medical device tax in Obamacare by slashing 5% of their global workforce – an estimated 1,170 positions.
Boston Scientific
In October of 2009, Boston Scientific CEO Ray Elliott, warned that proposed taxes in the health care reform bill could “lead to significant job losses” for his company. Nearly two years later, Elliott announced that the company would be cutting anywhere between 1,200 and 1,400 jobs, while simultaneously shifting investments and workers overseas – to China.
Medtronic
In March of 2010, medical device maker Medtronic warned that Obamacare taxes could result in a reduction of precisely 1,000 jobs. That plan became reality when the company cut 500 positions over the summer, with another 500 set for the end of 2013.

Almost every company has for some time had at least two plans roughed out. Plan A outlined what they’d do if ObamaCare was repealed or struck down.

Agreed, Pancho, but don’t forget that many of those blue states were won by only 1-2 %. There are lots of fine people in them. Those blue states would have been red if only a few more (relatively speaking) had agreed to get out on election day and vote. Romney lost several states (likely enough to have won the whole thing) that he would have won had conservative turnout been better.
Still, I’m coming back to America (from South Africa) in August 2013 for a few months of vacation and training before onwards to my next overseas gov’t posting, and plan on buying a motorcycle for a x/country bike trip. Originally, I had planned on buying it in CA, heading east and ending the trip in VA, where my training takes place, but I will not now, of course. CA WILL NOT get my tax dollars. Maybe I’ll buy it in AZ and start from there. I’ll still ride through CA (maybe try to look up Prof Hanson) and buy food, gas, lodging, etc, but they’re not going to get one cent from my M/C. I wish there was some way to identify “red” businesses vs “blue” businesses. The only thing I know of is that some major corporations contribute to campaigns. The small business owners are the ones I’d like to help the most. Given what’s going on in Florida with Allen West’s third-world-banana-republic recount it’s getting even worse. There isn’t even the attempt to look honest (where’s the Governor? Does Florida have one?). The sooner we starve the beast the better.

Hey…I live in Pennsylvania and I did not vote for Obama…and neither did the regions that rely on coal and natural gas… or many other regions of the state for that matter. the problem is our urban areas…philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Harrisburg….where the population density out numbers those of us in the state who actually work for a living. So small pockets of real estate dictate for the entire state.

No major city has more then a weeks worth of food in storage. Stop the food trucks and in a month all the pets will have been eaten and the Blues will be eyeing each other.
Look at a county by county map of PA before you judge the whole state. Only the Philadelphia area and Pittsburgh area are blue. Even Pittsburgh area with 75% Democrat registration edge only went for B. O. 54%. A lot of people here are upset as they feel the shale revolution will be stopped somehow.

The pain won’t really start so long as they can keep handing out food stamps, free medical, rent assistance, Obamaphones, and all the rest of it. That’s not going to stop even when people stop lending our government money, they’ll just print it like they’re doing now. No, the real pain will start when the Obama voters receive their welfare checks and it doesn’t buy them a loaf of bread due to inflation. Then the cities will burn.
My advice is to turn whatever money you have into precious metals like gold and silver, or brass and lead to protect the former. Something that cannot be stolen by inflation. Things like generators and extra fuel will be nice to have too once the rolling blackouts start after he shuts down the coal plants. The political will does not exist to balance the budget. Even Romney could not have changed it, just slowed it down instead of accelerating it. A day of reckoning will come, maybe not for years and maybe soon. When it does and the loot stops flowing to the entitled underclasses from the government, they will fan out from the cities to take it by force. Be ready for them.

This is a good point, and something I should’ve stated more explicitly. Part of my plan involves avoiding living in or near any major urban centers. If you absolutely have to, buy property somewhere remote and have a plan to get there. A small rural community may pull together to fend off incoming looters and may be useful for bartering, but the big dependent cities will become deathtraps.
The other important thing is to never advertise what you have. Buy your generator with cash so it isn’t on any records when the government comes looting in an emergency. Same goes for gold and guns. Most importantly, if the rest of the neighborhood or city has a blackout do NOT be the only house with the lights on. Black our your windows and get as quiet a generator as possible. A source of electrical light in the darkness is a beacon for looters.
While much of this is fairly sound advice, I don’t want to live like that and much of it isn’t practical anyway. The government will still have satellites, drones and other aerial surveillance to determine where people are who have what others “need”. Regardless of how well-armed you think you are, a handgun or rifle is no match against an Apache helicopter or an M1 Abrams tank.
Stockpiled food will be confiscated. Generators are only good temporarily unless you manage to stockpile thousands of gallons of fuel, which will again be confiscated.
After the government has confiscated and redistributed everything it can find, that’s when the usefulness of the entitled class will end. The ‘useful idiots’ will no longer be useful to the government and that’s when the exterminations will start. After that there will be only the ruling elite and the ‘workers’ who labor incessantly to provide barely enough for themselves to survive and keep the elite living in the lap of luxury. Any ‘worker’ unable to do his/her ‘fair share’ will be eliminated. This situation will likely remain unchanged for decades at least.
To me, a much better solution is to sell your property and move to another country, like Canada, Australia, Costa Rica, Mexico, someplace in the Caribbean, south pacific…there are many options . The trick is to do this before the borders are closed (to outgoing) and/or the currency becomes worthless.

I remember my grandmother always set a few extra plates on the table for meals. She would always find some way to stretch the food. She kept a large garden, raised chickens and kept a milk cow. She always found a way to keep milk, eggs, meat and vegetables on the table. She was always praying and singing as she worked. The mailman, meter-reader, street people, out of work relatives, it didn’t matter—anyone was welcome at her table. I can remember a few times when her guests spoke “funny languages” that made us kids laugh. She lived on a little farm outside of town. She went to the grocery store and church. And 1500 people showed up at her funeral.

Good thinking, I should have thought of that. However, my original point was that the tank or helo would come for your supplies after they’re found using surveillance. That would still happen and all you’d be left with, assuming you’re able to escape, would be what you could carry.
As for the Army, I mentioned that to a friend the other day, saying I thought most American military would be loathe to shoot/kill fellow Americans. He responded that they wouldn’t use the US military, but UN troops instead. He’s probably right.

I think most people who are arming themselves aren’t thinking about holding off attacks by military forces, much less tanks. What we CAN defend ourselves from are roving individual looters, or small groups of same.
One very obvious consideration that I rarely hear mentioned is long term supplies of water. I have three rain barrels, plus bottled water. You also need to get a water filter and/or some other method of water purification.(like bleach)(and charcoal filters to remove the bleach.)
Preppers always seem to focus mainly on extreme,end of America events, but think about what you would be doing now if you lived on Long Island.
Well, yeah, I guess it depends on what type of event you’re planning for. In the event of something short-term, like the aftermath from Sandy, then small arms are good against looters. Another option, if they’re unarmed and you don’t want to kill them is pepper spray and/or stun guns.
Having a generator (with adequate fuel), food (canned or other that doesn’t require refrigeration) and water are reasonable preparations. Good idea about the water filter. Other considerations are a first-aid kit, camping stove (and fuel), LED flashlights and batteries, maybe Coleman lantern (and fuel), battery powered radio and/or TV, and something to read.
For the long-term, end of America-type scenario, IMO you just can’t stock (and hide) enough consumables. To me, the only reasonable option is to leave the country and wait it out in someplace that’s still civilized.
There will be no government tanks or government helos if there is no real currency to pay for them. Currently, US debt is larger than the GDP. In a real SHTF scenario where America collapses that debt to GDP ratio will be much worse for the ruling elite. No tanks, no helos, no cruise missiles, etc. The ruling elite dies, the country breakups into micro-states, some despotic, some not.
You cannot field an imperial army without paying them, UN troops, mercenaries or no.
The other thing you are overlooking is who is going to drive those tanks and helos. And not just because they aren’t being paid.
Soldiers are people too. People with families. It is very easy to get a Service Member to deploy when they know that their spouses and children are at home. Living in the relative safety and security of a stable America. In a true SHTF scenario you are going to see the same thing you saw with the New Orleans police during huricane Katrina. Soldiers are going to ensure the safety and security of their families first. If it truely falls apart the military will be facing rampant desertion. And not neccessarily because the service members do or do not believe in the mission, but that other priorities are more important.
We’ve all seen how quickly society fractures in the aftermath of a natural disaster (Katrina, Sandy). Imagine how fast it will happen in the event of a total social/economic collapse where FEMA or “law enforcement” isn’t coming to bail you out. Stockpiling, and fortification are good ideas, but unless you have both the means and especially the will to protect yourselves it will do little good when the mob comes for you. Some of us refuse to be victims. Darwin will sort out the others.
