Here’s my broken record take on the gist of all the above–only unyielding determined resolution is going to prevent the permanent drift of America into a “feel-good” authoritarianism that is eventually going to neuter both Christianity and American Exceptionalism, as America basically starts mirroring the hierarchical societies of the rest of the world–elite-led with no challenges to elite beliefs.
This is a cultural battle, not a political one. Determined resolution will cause the GOP to stiffen somewhat, but they are stopgaps (at best)–not the answer. Things will never return to the pre-Vietnam War society (for it had faults, to be sure), but the day can be won.
But it will not be won by Mitt Romney, or any politico. We, the people, will save or lose this still last, still best hope of man on Earth. Never forget the demos-ruled Greek city-states were but a blip in history. True Jacksonian yeomen-ruled republics (i.e., practical-minded middle class versus rich/poor in concert) don’t have to long survive either.
