Foreign Affairs Chairwoman: Stop Funding UN that Stands with Iran Over U.S. and Israel

The chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee said today that Washington needs to “make clear that we will not keep footing the bill for a UN that stands with the likes of Iran instead of responsible nations like the U.S. and Israel.”

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) urged no legitimacy for the Iran regime as it attempts to destroy evidence of its nuclear weapons program while the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) makes efforts to access the military site that may have been scrubbed.

“I cannot be too optimistic … We have been making our best efforts in a constructive spirit to work out an agreement between Iran and IAEA, but so far we have not been successful in reaching agreement,” agency Director General Yukiya Amano told reporters on Wednesday.

“Tehran again reveals its true intentions: to obtain nuclear weapons capability while covering up the evidence. The Iranian threat continues to swell, and we cannot negotiate our way out of it,” Ros-Lehtinen said.

“But as Tehran again refuses to cooperate with the UN’s nuclear watchdog, the UN will legitimize Tehran through the Secretary General’s attendance of the upcoming Tehran summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, which the regime is exploiting as a propaganda victory,” she continued. “Instead of acting to address the growing Iranian threat to international security, the UN is again part of the problem, not the solution.”

Ban Ki-moon is attending the summit despite calls for a boycott by the U.S. and Israel. The UN said Ban will use the trip as an “opportunity to convey the clear concerns and expectations of the international community,” including “Iran’s nuclear program, terrorism, human rights and the crisis in Syria.”

“The UN must stop aiding Iran and its partners in crime through technical assistance from the IAEA and WIPO, through participation in dangerous pariah propaganda activities, and through granting leadership posts to rogue regimes,” Ros-Lehtinen said.
