While one public official was announcing his intent to let millions break the law on one side of the country, another official was enforcing the law on the other side of the country. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s deputies rounded up a group of 16 suspected illegal aliens crossing the border into Arizona. The group were mostly adults, but among them was a six-year-old girl. She told the deputies that she is from El Salvador.
HuffPo headlined this story with that site’s customary balance and restraint:
Joe Arpaio’s Office Arrests 6-Year-Old Suspected Undocumented Immigrant
The headline more than suggests that Sheriff Joe has done something wrong and arrested a little girl all by herself. But who is at fault here? Sheriff Joe was elected by the people of his county to enforce the law. In halting illegal aliens, he is doing the job that the law requires him to do. They stopped 16 illegal aliens Friday night and probably busted their smuggler too.
President Obama announced a new immigration policy on Friday that tells the whole world he has no intent of doing his job, which is to faithfully execute the laws of this nation. That announcement probably played no role in this specific case, but it will attract more illegal aliens, and it will create more business for the coyotes who smuggle these people, and drugs and other things, into the United States. It will make it more difficult to secure the border. Sheriff Joe will see more six-year-old illegal aliens making a very dangerous journey in the hands of some unsavory and dangerous characters thanks to President Obama.
We also shouldn’t exonerate the little girl’s family in all this. Six-year-old girls don’t make the decision to cross borders on their own, they don’t hire the smugglers, they don’t make this trek unless some adult has made the decisions for them. These family decisions to abandon one country and break the laws of another, and continue to break those laws every day, don’t start with the six-year-old, and they don’t end with a presidential declaration either. Sheriff Joe still has to do his job. We are either a nation of laws, or we are not.

six year olds don’t decide to come into the US, but 15 year olds do…my (Colombian adopted) son’s English second language class was mainly boys who left Mexico as teens because there were no jobs there and came to work in the agricultural jobs…in the winter, they attended school as “15 year olds” even though most of them were older…
The bad news? The less ambitious join gangs, sell drugs etc. to get by.
I have no problem with an amnesty for those who have jobs and have lived in the US for years. I do have a problem giving a carte blanche to a group by fiat…to get votes.
I have no problem with immigration that makes our country smarter, better, and more prosperous, and there’s an extremely easy way to ensure that. For every immigrant, there should be a less desirable emigrant — one in, one out.
For every hardworking agricultural worker, foreign student, inventor, or businessman that we can meet at the border with open arms, we should export a habitual felon, pedophile, or career politician.

… or open borders enthusiast …
We should have a national dialogue about the idea there are simply too many people in this country. What exactly is the point of continually growing a population that now stands at over 300 million. Do we need more people? Clearly we do not.
In only 2 generations Americans have gone from being one of the smartest to one of the stupidest countries in the world, dedicated to handing it over to the most brutally unexceptional populations of a brutal Third World. Why? Well ask someone who knows cuz I sure as hell don’t.
…so, if I embezzle the union pension fund and spend it on my house, boats, cars, kids’ education, etc. and the authorities catch me, do my “innocent” kids get to keep the house, boat, cars, education, etc? everyone wants to say how “unfair” it is to the kids who did nothing wrong, but would someone please explain to me why it is fair to let the kids benefit through the ILLEGAL acts of their parents? should Bernie Madoff’s “innocent” kids and wife get the benefit of Bernie’s illegal activity?
“so, if I embezzle the union pension fund and spend it on my house, boats, cars, kids’ education, etc. and the authorities catch me, do my “innocent” kids get to keep the house, boat, cars, education, etc? ”
Just curious: how do you take an education back? Sure, you can repossess cars and other personal property but I’m darned if I can think of a way to take an education back.
Well ‘they’ can take that education back — back to their country of origin. Lets just hope they put it to good use by educating their fellow countrymen about what happens when they get caught in the USA without proper paperwork.
Getting an education isn’t the crime committed by the parent. It’s the coming/staying her illegally the “repossession” would be deportation back to the homeland.
Personally I think these children should be offered a stint in the military (not Americorps, college or some other cheap way out, the military)
in exchange for citizenship. Otherwise, go home.
The one good thing about the events of this year is that they will in fact lead to racial harmony–because it will be hard for African-Americans and Hispanics to continue to fling deeds of WASPs past at WASPs present while not exactly being spotless themselves in the here and now. Rosewood was bad, but it was in the past. The Zimmerman affair is today. The Mexican-American War was in the past. La Raza is today. You cannot convict a present generation and deny them that which they have a right to because of the past. You just can’t.
What is happening, as painful as it may be, is that whatever moral high ground the two above-named groups might have had is quickly being wasted on things not of greater importance. If the Hispanic community thinks it is going to be able to repeat the last three decades of illegal border crossings until it somehow gains a permanent demographic edge, and that it is going to be able to justify the entire thing based upon, say, the Zoot Suit Riots of the 40s, which recede further into ancient history every year, it is deluded. Truly deluded.
My guess is that the party is just about over, and people are about to get blunt, in a “preference cascade” fashion.. Every citizen in America gets to be equal before the law. No more, no less, theories of social justice notwithstanding. The “no more” part is not going to go down well in certain quarters.
Too bad.
American exceptionalism: the very people who deny it the most won’t let us the hell alone to enjoy it.
“Joe Arpaio’s Office Arrests 6-Year-Old Suspected Undocumented Immigrant”
So?
If they’d arrested her parents for any crime, they’re going to take her into custody as well.
Same thing if they find a six year old and no parents or guardian at hand.
What do you want them to do? Let her wander around by herself?
“What do you want them to do? Let her wander around by herself?”
Hand her over to the department trained and staffed for this specific purpose: CPS.
No, they’re going to hand her over to ICE so she can be cared for and so they can try and find her parents/guardian.
Like they’re supposed to do.
Time was, this sort of consequence falling upon a child was considered an indispensable part of the deterrent laid upon his parents: their lawbreaking would result not merely in punishment for them, but in hardship for their children (whom they were presumed to love). Today, that’s considered intolerable by the PC crowd, but I challenge them to find a better approach to the deterrence of illegal entry, now that “anchor babies” are the swiftest and surest way to gain permanent residence in the United States.
If Bambi had any compassion at all he’d export the ideas behind American Exceptionalism to Latin America and stop the influx of immigrants. But no, he likes the desperation of the illegals, he likes the criminality of the drug trade, he likes the destruction of the American fabric. He’s just like every other Washington politician who wants to make it easier for the illegals to come here rather than to make it easier for them to stay home.
She was arrested with 15 others who crossed the border illegally. Why are we singling out the girl? If you are here illegally you *should* be arrested and sent back.
Whooooa! Just a cotton pickn’ minute. Isn’t a minor of an ‘Illegal Alien’ family, an – Anchor Baby? And this anchor baby, reaching some quirky, goofily arranged Legal Permanent Resident (LPR) status…in turn, sponsors their ‘Illegal Family’ relatives for LPR status, too????
In Phoenix, a ‘Sanctuary City,’ there are numerous NGO’s (non-governmental organiztions) operating (under the radar)with housing, feeding, employing, helping ‘Illegal Aliens’ with settlement in “their new country.” One such organization in Phoenix is Casa Brazil. It is well known in Brazilian circles to actively transport brazilians (or illegal aliens) of all ages to Scottsdale (an upscale Phoenix neighborhood)for deployment in or around Arizona and neighboring States.
This is but one active, existing example of organized criminal enterprises (NGO’s), operating ‘under the radar’ aiding and abeting illegal alien’s criminal activities. Sheriff Arpaio is battling: La Raza, Chicanos por La Causa, ACLU, DOJ, MoveOn.org, Code Pink, Priorities, MediaMatters, and numerous other socialist, marxist organizations. His is a legal battle against a sodomite Goliath. But, We The People all know…David Won. God Bless America. Amen.
