Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that the next request to raise the debt ceiling would likely make members “uncomfortable.”
Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) noted assumptions that another request to hike the debt limit is forthcoming.
“If this were the last debt ceiling increase you could ask for, the final one, and you had to make it large enough for all current and future obligations, what would the request need to be?” Gowdy asked.
“I don’t know how to answer that question,” Geithner responded, adding that it “makes no sense for the country” for Congress to hold repeated “politically difficult” votes on the debt ceiling.
Gowdy pushed Geithner further on estimating a number for one final request.
“It would be a lot,” Geithner finally said. “It would make you uncomfortable.”
