Former Dem Rep. Regrets Her ObamaCare Vote

Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper, welcome to the Lied to by Barack Obama club:

Former Democratic congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper, a Catholic from Erie, Pennsylvania, cast a crucial vote in favor of Obamacare in 2010. She lost her seat that November in part because of her controversial support of Obamacare. But Dahlkemper said recently that she would have never voted for the health care bill had she known that the Department of Health and Human Services would require all private insurers, including Catholic charities and hospitals, to provide free coverage of contraception, sterilization procedures, and the “week-after” pill “ella” that can induce early abortions.

“I would have never voted for the final version of the bill if I expected the Obama Administration to force Catholic hospitals and Catholic Colleges and Universities to pay for contraception,” Dahlkemper said in a press release sent out by Democrats for Life in November. “We worked hard to prevent abortion funding in health care and to include clear conscience protections for those with moral objections to abortion and contraceptive devices that cause abortion. I trust that the President will honor the commitment he made to those of us who supported final passage.”

Well, you may have worked hard but you neglected to notice something: That all Obama promises come with an expiration date. That being the case, you can work yourself to the bone and it will do you no good. You had to vote for that bill to find out that oppression of your faith was in it. And to find out that our constitutional freedoms were not.

The Obama administration may really have awakened a sleeping giant here. I’m hearing that even in liberal Catholic churches, the bishops’ letters denouncing the DHS policy are being met with applause. People get what’s happening here. It’s not about contraception or aborifacients per se, where there is disagreement among the laity, it’s about what the government can dictate to religious groups and what it can’t. The Supreme Court has already pushed back on an Obama admin attempt to push for changes in church hiring practices. That abuse of power didn’t raise enough awareness to pull the giant out of its slumber. But this ObamaCare decision has, and now those of us who are not Catholic but recognize an attack on faith when we see one are standing up with our brothers and sisters in the Catholic church.
