Sarah Palin may have called Herman Cain the Flavor of the Week, but that week is suddenly getting bigger and longer – extraordinarily so. The Georgian just won the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) straw poll today with a whopping 48.9% of the vote out of the nine candidates. Perry came in a distant second with 14%, Romney third with 13.
“In a straw poll with this many candidates on the ballot, it is unusual for one candidate to receive almost half of the votes,” said Karen Floyd, former chair of the South Carolina Republican Party and publisher of PalladianView.com, which conducted the poll. “It is very impressive.”
Each of the nine candidates on the ballot were invited to address the NFRW convention in Kansas City, Mo., but only Cain, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum accepted.
Gingrich came in fourth place with 12.5 percent of the vote, while Santorum was fifth with 6.9 percent.
Michele Bachmann, at a woman’s straw poll, received less than two percent. Time to drop out?

Janeane Gagawfullo hardest hit.
Roger, your lead-in is pathetic and unfair. Why don’t you put matters in proper context instead of using the same crap logic of the mainstream media?
Sarah Palin stated that the media likes to build a candidate up one week and tear them down the following week, that first it was Bachmann, followed by Perry, and now it appears to be Herman Cain.
She did not call Herman Cain the flavor of the week, and you owe her and her supporters an apology. She said the MEDIA had such a pattern.
This insinuation for your opening sentence disgusts me to the point of not caring what the hell else you have to write.
Tnx, couldn’t have said it better.
Er, what? Did you folks bother to click on the link above – or are you just hotheads?
Nancy, I clicked on the link you mentioned and what the commentors above said agrees completely with the message in the link. So who’s not paying attention here? Looks like you.

I’ll stand by my original account. Roger’s disgusting insinuation stands for itself. His default position perpetuates the media canard. His opening statement is reprehensible. If he intended to rise above the media myth making, he would not have required the reader to access a link (to which readers don’t universally do).
I do find it entertaining to read Simon apologist try to shine this turb. Keep buffing.
You’re just upset because Herman Cain has stolen Sarah Palin’s thunder and left her with no reason to enter the race.
Carol:
We don’t know one another so I reserve judgment about you comment as a common courtesy.
No, I express my disgust not because of Herman’s success via-a-vis Palin. It was expressed in the interest of common fairness.
I watched Palin’s interveiw when it actually took place, with in actual context. If you had too I’m sure in the interest of fair-dealing would agree with my initial comment.
In fact, Herman is my preferred candidate of those who have announced.
my take on it was she was bashing the media not cain.
of course the out of context (… purposely? …) soundbites don’t show that. god forbid the media let anyone bash them.
for the record I AM a Cain supporter.
I am not sure that Mr. Simon was saying that Palin belittled Mr. Cain. As Palin pointed out there is a ‘flavor of the week’ pattern to the press’s treatment of the cantidates, and many expected Cain to be treated as such. Palin was pointing that out, and so was Mr. Simon by referencing her quote. Perhaps he could have been clearer about that. Maybe your criticism is valid, but it is without a doubt overly harsh.
I enjoy reading PJM, Mr. Simon’s articles, and the reader’s comments. They all help me clarify my views and refine my reasoning and writing skills. You, Mr. Potato Head, appear to have an appropriate name. Your comments are often over-the-top, emotional and overly critical of the writers. Bring up valid points and criticisms without beating people up. Be a contributor or go back over to the HuffPuff and rant there.

I’m pleased something is helping you clear your head.
The personal comment from you isn’t upsetting to me, as I have found “boys” brains are still in development.
I’ll continue to call them as I see them, even at the risk of you running for cover under your blanky.
Sarah Palin was polled head to head with Mr. Cain or this post gives a false impression.
If a writer can’t make their point without the reader following a link, don’t blame the reader.
I agree with the above posters that Mr. Simon is adding fuel to the fire. And in doing so he is complicit in making politicians over cautious about speaking candidly. And thus is complicit in making politicians keeping the truth away from the public. There is nothing redeeming to say about it. It is disgusting and putting a link in the article doesn’t make it any more acceptable.
Congrats to Herman Cain. Good to see Republicans working hard for support among women.
Isn`t this the party that is supposed to be Raciest, from hell, bigots, loons, hate everyone but the white and evil …well I am a southern white, and I really like Mr. Cain….and i also love ms. palin….And Sarah, you lady have done more to rejuvinate the Rep. party than any other dozen people combined….Thank you Ms. Palin…
I meant to say ”Hate everyone but the white and wealthy evil Rep…
“Each of the nine candidates on the ballot were invited to address the NFRW convention in Kansas City, Mo., but only Cain, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum accepted”
90% of life is just showing up and participating. Romney and Perry would likely have polled better, if they had just bothered to show up. They just allowed Cain to grab a huge endorsement almost for free.
Maybe they had prior commitments. Maybe these were more important in their minds. The problem with big candidates is that they have the resources to schedule loads of things way in advance. Cain does not have those resources, yet. So, he is freer to respond to invites from such groups. This was time and money well-spent. Better spent than going to yet another rally and giving the same stump speech.
The Cain Train had to climb a steep hill, but he has reached the level ground and is picking up steam. He is now a contender, no longer a dark-horse candidate. He could seriously win it.
