It’s because of our stupid energy policy. Seriously — we’re making ethanol out of corn, which drives up the price of corn, and everything that eats corn gets more expensive too. Pigs eat corn. People like Mitt Romney support ethanol subsidies. So under his policy of supporting ethanol subsidies, your bacon prices will necessarily skyrocket. It’s just math.
The global debt crisis has sparked riots in Greece and elsewhere in Europe, but while you were watching the mayhem on TV, you might not have noticed that there’s a riot brewing at your kitchen table.
Bacon prices are expected to soar this summer — just in time for peak BLT (bacon lettuce and tomato sandwich) season. …
But this year, just as the U.S. is worrying about its own debt crisis and a possible “double-dip” recession, the price of bacon —that sizzling, smoky comfort food we most need during tough times — is expected to surge. The price of pork bellies, which is where bacon comes from, jumped to more than $130 per hundredweight (100 pounds), and some analysts suggest it’s going to top last August’s level of $150.
Six bucks a pound. That’s what we’re looking at. Ralph Nader may get his riots after all, unless we drill here, drill now, and wean ourselves off demon ethanol.

Up here in Ma they are almost $7 a pound right now. No more eggs and bacon or blt’s for us.
Okay, now I’m panicking.
I can tell you aren’t buying your own bacon. Package sizes have shrunk to 12 Oz. and prices are five bucks a pound here, already. While one argument might attempt to sway me that the ethanol subsidy and mandate are necessary, no way are they proper in light of the unintended consequences.
Wait for it! CASH FOR PORK
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO BACONALIA?!
Its just a little more complicated than just ethanol. The left over mash from the brew still has value. Fact there is more corn oil that can be had from the mash and the reside is what the pigs eat. Pigs rarely get a large quantity of 100% whole kernel corn feed. Too much fat.
So why the rising prices? Well like dumbasses, we are shipping the mash to china.
Maybe it’s got to do with the dollar losing value ?
It’s not the bacon rising, it’s the dollar dropping.
Pigs are our US strategic natural gas reserve. Secret goverment feeding lots converted from egg ranches used for the N1A1 vaccine are exploiting pigs for their manure which is simply predigested methane being stockpiled for essential transportation. If you convert your car or truck to run on natural gas, you too will have wheels when Hugo Chavez lays a pipeline across Columbia for the Chinese. Bacon is just a methane byproduct. We actually produce bacon for free. It’s just that all the profits are being used to convince people to stop shale fracking which would ruin the manure monopoly. Pigs are much more efficient than ethanol plants. When’s the last time you remember getting a tax subsidy to feed your pig?
Dang, bacon is one of my sons’ major food groups!
But I thought Obama did nothing but dole out pork? Looks like prices on everything we need to buy, like food and gas and electricity, is going up sky high, while prices on ordinary peoples assets, like homes, and their wages, are falling. Real hope and change we can beleive in. Glad Obama is doing such a great job of taking care of the middle class.
drill here, drill now? srsly? you are aware that the market for oil is a global one, aren’t you? and you realize, i hope, that the lag from drilling to production can be as much as a decade? so you propose to slash the price of bacon by a few pennies … some time in the 20s?
I’ve been listening to that same line that “it won’t help for ten years” for at least twice that long. By that argument, you shouldn’t bother sending your kids to school, because it’s not going to help until they graduate.
one aspect that doesn’t get discussed much is the fact that OPEC does not want competition from us. They don’t want to lose the business by allowing oil prices to rise to a point where we can produce our own for the same price. They don’t have to worry about that when drilling is banned. bush signed an executive order opening up drilling and the price plummeted. the economy was a factor but…. One of the first things boob-ama did was sign an executive order bush’s order. Then with the gulf spill he banned even more drilling. OPEC doesn’t have to worry about their prices with boob-ama in office.
