The New York Times steps out of reactionary mode to report the news, including this, regarding today’s shooting in Frankfurt, Germany that left two US Air Force airmen dead and two others wounded:
A man whose office is near the site of the shooting said it was an area where buses load arriving passengers. Speaking on condition of anonymity to protect his business, he said witnesses told him that the gunman first talked to the military personnel to find out who they were and then opened fire, shouting “God is great” in Arabic.
We already knew that the shooter is from Kosovo, which is predominantly Muslim. The US military led NATO efforts to defend Kosovo from the Serbs in the 1990s. The US Air Force played the lead role in that campaign, as a matter of fact, because President Clinton ruled out the use of ground troops early on. Some 5,000 US ground troops continue to guard the Kosovo border with Serbia.
