“The fact of the matter is the Wall Street Journal editorial page just kicks our editorial page’s ass. I mean there’s just no contest, from top to bottom, and it’s disappointing.”

So said a New York Times reporter quoted in a much talked about New York Observer column Tuesday (“The Tyranny and Lethargy of the Times Editorial Page“).  In the article, a passel of Timesmen vented anonymously about how embarrassingly dull their opinion pages were, dumping on the tired and windy Thomas Friedman as a particular repetitive offender and pointing fingers at opinion editor Andrew Rosenthal as the mini-despot responsible for the mess.

I certainly agree about the mind-bending banality of the Times opinion page and the windiness (at best) of Friedman. But I think the reporters are off the mark on the cause.  They can blame it on Rosenthal if they wish — I have no opinion, not working there — but the real problem is far greater than any one editor.

To adopt what is becoming a modern cliché — it’s the ideology, stupid.

The Times reporters complained of the page’s uniformly negative tone, but not even S.J. Perelman or P.G. Wodehouse could write with verve in the service of modern liberalism.  You can’t bring a dead horse to life.  No writer is that good — at least on a regular basis.

How, for example, do you write an eloquent defense of Obamacare or justify the administration’s actions in Benghazi without resorting to the kind of obfuscation that makes for convoluted, or at best tedious, writing? How do you advocate for yet more government programs in a country already so mired in debt it’s hard to see how it will ever get out?  It’s Keynesian economics itself that’s the problem, not Paul Krugman.

To overcome political correctness there has to arise a surge of people who think creatively but also independently. They also must be able to face down the bullies. Recently, I attended a seminar that dealt with education. Two individuals became involved in an animated exchange, one conservative, one progressive liberal. The lib called the conservative "racist" for his opinion. The conservative calmly walked over to him and said very quietly and evenly, "if you call me that again, you and I are going to fight right here. I mean it, I will punch you right in the mouth." The lib just stood open mouthed and when the audience began to clap, sat down. A small demonstration of strength? Perhaps. But it may become the only way.

A funny column and something of a watershed event. Just look at what you wrote. For the first time there is emerging a wider cultural sense that the Left's routinely Orwellian conformist liars who claim the mantle of having inherited the cultural revolution of the '60s are in fact the new rednecks.

Let's be honest: the '60s folks pushed back against institutional identity advocacy, racism, sexism, and bigotry. Today, the Left is by far the single greatest source of all four of those.

The '60s folks pushed back against the idea of labels being more important than content. In this case I'm talking about the shallowness of the idea of the inherent morality of the gay, the non-white and the female.

Rednecks in the '60s acted like if you wore a suit and tie and acted properly then you actually were proper. Today's identity advocacy is as stupid a stereotype as putting on a lab coat and saying you're a scientist.

Art was a big deal in the '60s and young people flocked to Salinger, Heinlein and Herbert for re-imaginings of what it meant to be a human being. Today's literature, much of it grounded in the febrile idea that "diversity" or to be "global" or "non-Western" is an interchangeable word with "art," or "interesting," is conformist garbage.

The films the Left puts out are boring, ideological or artistic retreads also obsessed with identity compared to unique visions from the '60s.

The science fiction community, my literature of choice, constantly carps about their mind-bending new stories. Unfortunately what that really amounts to is having a woman or gay person in an inartfully written tract where art takes a back seat. I accurately predicted and in public that Ann Leckie's new SF novel Ancillary Justice would garner every award nomination SFF has. So far I am batting 100%. Why? Ancillary Justice has no gender pronouns featured in it. It is at the top of every politically correct idiots list. The problem it is a first novel that is completely lacking in distinction. Art has literally been shoved out the door.

That same community has feminists literally having pie-charts of gays, non-whites, and woman published and announcing - in percentages, how many non-white, gay and female authors they read last year, expressing disappointment if they didn't do well and vowing to do better.

Extrapolate that out to the entirety of the liberal movement today in all arenas of American culture. That's where your Orwellian Newspeak about "undocumented" aliens comes from. And are feminists pie-charting the over 97% male casualties from Iraq and Afghanistan? Are they having blog posts about how they don't have to register for the draft? You'd better damn well believe they're not - because they are lying hypocrites, even while they whine about "male privilege."

The Left relentlessly attacks any group that is "too white," as de facto racist. Is there a principle behind that? You damn well can believe there's not. Middle-weight boxing, Bollywood film, Arabic literature, the NBA, hip-hop and Samba music and a thousand other things skate clean away.

Here is a list of awards I can never win because I am the wrong skin color:

The Hurston Wright Foundation
Black Writers Alliance Award
Celebration of Black Writing
Black Publishers & Writers Awards
New Voices Award
The Dickerson-Du Bois Undergraduate Award
BCALA Literary Award
Asian American Literature Award
Coretta Scott King Book Awards
The Unpublished Writers Award
Black Mystery Writers Awards
National Council for Black Studies Writing Award
AAMBC Literary Awards

Are these from the racist Right? You can damn well believe they are not. They are from the bigoted and racist identity advocates and segregationists on the Left. Can I do that? NO. It's WRONG!?! The WisCon science-fiction convention actually has a racially segregated "safer space" and dinner for non-whites only. I mean, can you frickin' believe that? Can you imagine the fallout and crying if I announced a white's only space? Ma and Pa Kettle look like heady intellectuals compared to that backward looking pot of crud. This is your progressivism.

Liberalism is an institutionalized form of lying, racial and sexual advocacy and supremacy, hypocrisy, conformity, and intolerance. It has become nothing more than a shelter for bigots. It is Orwellian from top to bottom. "Doublethink" is no longer a thing to warn against and avoid. On the Left, it is adopted as orthodoxy. My frickin' gramma from the farm who listened to polka music on the radio was more of a free-thinker than the average liberal.

One of the hallmark theories on the Left is "white privilege," which is to me nothing more than a concocted racial slur and clever re-imagining of Nazi race propaganda. No surprise that and the "white racist supremacist patriarchy" is being hawked like snake oil by Bill Ayers and black gay feminists.

The bottom line is this: the Left has no principles - none whatsoever. Their place their faith in a hiera

"Of course, the comic was right about political correctness. It’s not only the enemy of comedy. It’s the enemy of human life — no more than fascism with a phony egalitarian face. "

Political correctness is a bondage of the mind; a chaining of the intellect; a leash for mental slaves; a stifling, and ultimately a decapitation, of human liberty itself. It is, in clear and plain fact, a regression back to the Inquisitions of the Dark Ages.

To paraphrase Jorge-Luis Borges, political correctness fosters oppression, political correctness fosters servitude, political correctness fosters cruelty, perhaps even more abominable is the fact that it fosters idiocy.

To the human mind it is the plague. All but a troop of zombies should be above it and despise it in any of it's members.

Personally, as far as Friedman goes (not very) and his windiness, thinking people would be better served by hearing his farts as opposed to anything he had to say or write.......It follows the adage that "Listening to MessNBC to learn about politics is like listening to farts to learn about cooking." I suspect it also applies to the rest of the non-Fox TV media as well these days..

Jerry Seinfeld has no reason to defined himself "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" is HIS SHOW. It's his perogative to pick who he interviews.
Most of his guests are people he has known for decades so he knows he knows how to talk to that person.
It doesn't look like and interview; it looks like two old friends sitting down and goofing around.
Is it Jerry's fault that these lifelong friends are mostly white? Should he feel guilty that his peer group doesn't look like an old United Colors of Benneton ad? Of course not.
Websites like Gawker stamp their feet and cry sexism or racism because it gets them website hits. Seinfeld is above them.

'political correctness' - means it is not correct, and can only be seen to be correct if you apply a political slant to it.

Cut to the chase - it is by definition NOT correct. If it were, it wouldn't need a modifier.

Quod Erat Demonstrandum, as we used to say in math class.

The left never blames the ideology. Not ever. A couple more moribund years and even Obama stands to be cast overboard. No amount of evidence will ever convince these folks that it's not the execution that is at fault, it is the plan itself.

Still, the only way out is the codification or practical implementation of a split into two societies. Meanwhile, the Admin continues to egg on the MB through proxies and family members. Obama denies everything, denies the clear abuses of the IRS and gets away with it. True, his poll numbers are down. False, American politics just needs a few Republican victories and things will be back on track. They are off-track in a systematic way, and the cultural decline which you reference is deep and organic. Would that it would be otherwise. Better to codify the reality of two nations living in one then to see how this plays out.

Before I retired I worked in a very good children's hospital - good enough that our patients and their parents came from all over the world and from every walk of life. Sensitivity to the cultures and mores of every family was not an exercise in PC baloney, it was essential to our business. This is obviously not Seinfeld's world, but every culture - every individual - has a unique laughing place and finding it makes connections that put everyone at ease.

That's funny. Sometimes I wonder the same thing about apologists for the Iraq War and anti-Iran saber-rattlers. Although it must be easy if you can put the thought of hundreds of thousands of of human beings killed by such policies out of your mind.

But caring about human life, especially those of Third Worlders with scary religions, is for PC pansies, amirite?

It's not so much the religion that's scary as the planes they fly into our buildings.

And then there's the bombs.

The UN and 56 countries liberated Iraq after Hussein invaded Kuwait and Iran and paid suicide bombers to kill people in Israel and killed and tortured 14,000,000 of his own people and violated the UN resolution he agreed to abide by and shot at US and UN planes and violated the food for oil program and illegally purchased weapons (square miles of them that we found, one area the size of Manhattan purchased illegally from France) and directed 12 WMD scientists to restart his WMD program, illegally, and one general said, shipped his WMD to Syria, where they are now, and threw humans alive into plastic shredders cuz he wanted to emulate Hitler, so 56 countries and the UN voted together saying he had to go. But you, you idiot, Andrew 216, say he had nothing to do with 9-11 or with Slavery before the US Civil War so his other crimes make no difference. Try that defense the next time you get arrested for a speeding ticket. Makes no sense to me. Oh yeah, the Iraqi people tried him for his crimes after he crawled out of his hole, and they convicted and hung him. (He taught his sons by video, on the best way to torture people, including his brother in law, who he lured back to Iraq, to do the dirty deed. A real sweetheart).

When it comes to the the deaths of hundreds of thousands of human beings, the left has the right beat by doe much it can't even be comprehended. You could begin with Stalin, then add Mao (the greatest murder of all time by a huge factor) and then Hitler ( the national socialist) and of course, coming up a sad fourth, Mussolini (well maybe Pol Pot). The right is nowhere to be seen in this mega-bloody arithmetic. But continue on, anonymous Anrew216. Unlike you, I write under my own name.

Mussolini isn't even in the top ten, I think. Going by numbers alone, the biggest mass murderers were Mao, Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, and Saddam Hussein.

For those of you who are not aware, I'd like to point out that the current practice of political correctness (though not that use of the term) goes back to around 1950 in the Communist Party of the USA. It was a reaction to "white chauvinism". Like today, it quickly became a tool for gaining power over extremely minor incidents. This has been documented by Joseph Starobin and Dorothy Healy, both Communists. Read Ron Radosh's "Red Star Over Hollywood" for some info (portions can be read via Amazon's "Look Inside"). Especially read the parts how the great Dalton Trumbo was excoriated by his fellow Reds for innocent phrases in a script.
