Several weeks ago I wrote I thought Barack Obama didn’t really want to be president. The post generated a fair amount of discussion, pro and con.
Michelle’s $375,000 Spanish vacation — with the Daily Mail dubbing her a “modern-day Marie Antoinette” — is further proof of my thesis. What man who wanted to be re-elected (or see his party do well in November) would let his wife go off on such an “excellent adventure” in these economic times? Of course no one denies the right of people to have vacations – I’m coming to the end of one myself on my beloved Bainbridge Island — but closing Mediterranean beaches while booking 60-plus rooms in a five star Marbella hotel for her entourage? It is beyond tone deaf, perhaps to the level of subconscious (or even deliberate) self-sabotage.
At the very least, something most peculiar is going on. The first lady goes off on a jaunt worthy of 18th Century aristocracy at the very moment of her husband’s birthday. Is somebody trying to tell us something? Is somebody trying to tell her spouse something? Or vice-versa? Who knows? You won’t find out in the mainstream media — that’s for sure. They don’t even bother to check Obama’s college records. Perhaps the National Enquirer is on the case. They may be the only hope.
If I were still a member of the Democratic Party, I would be most concerned. What is going on in the White House seems to be so disconnected from the reality of our country — with some indicating real unemployment at a staggering 22% — as to be teetering on the brink of a pyschological disorder. And in this case that disorder would be a folie a deux of some sort because Barack and Michelle appear to be colluding in it in some way, whatever the state of their relationship. And that disconnect — between them and the American people — is growing.
Why is this happening?
It makes me wonder more about the state of the marriage. I think Barry gave up on second term long ago.
All this big production, while he spends his birthday in some seedy “men’s club” in Chicago away from them… something ain’t right.
I have a theory.
Michelle is spending a fortune of our money on an ultra-lavish five star vacation (a mere two weeks after returning from her last free, lavish vacation), and Obama flew his dog on a taxpayer-funded private jet, then flew the world’s most expensive helicopter to make a speech only 6 miles away.
I think they have bet each other as to who can be the first to spend $300,000 (of our money) per day for one week, on lavish, frivolous luxuries. The winner gets to roll around naked in $10 million of taxpayer’s cash, and then burn it.

Leigh: Yes, I think Bright-as-a-Button Barry gave up on a second term a while ago. Why shouldn’t he? He accomplished his socialist agenda and I don’t think he believes he can push it any further. Why bother? He’s damaged this country irreparably, together with Congress, and so there’s not much else to destroy. He and Congress know they’ve utterly alienated most Americans, as the expected to, and they don’t give a damn. Observe the attitude of Democrats up for reelection, such as Pete Stark, and Reid, and Pelosi. I don’t thinkk they’re shaking in their boots about November. They’re confident the Republicans, if they get a majority in the House, will screw it up again, and the Democrats will be back to finish their demolition job.
The odds are fairly high that Barack Obama will resign from the presidency. The everyday demands of the job bore him to death. It was foolish to elect a man who has such a slim resume and little executive experience. Obama is not “growing” during his time in office. He is not only poorly educated—his narcissism also gets in the way. The world is supposed to revolve him. Obama’s perceives himself as nearly infallible.
I can’t imagine Barack Obama resigning the presidency. That would be a big negative to his goal of becoming President of the World, and I don’t think he’s recognized yet that it just ain’t gonna happen.
You may be giving too much credit to the idea that other countries think more of Kenya Slim than we do. He is just a curiosity.

Somewhere along the way last week, I was mildly suprised to see before / after picures of Obama, with a headline pointing out how much he’s aged in the psst year or two. I didn’t read the accompanying article so I don’t know what the writer attributes the alleged aging to, but *if* he’s aged (more grey hair, deeper worry lines) then that would indicate to me that he cares a great deal more about what’s going on around him than I had thought he was capable of doing.
If Obama is aging, then Michelle is just getting glitzier and glitzier (i.e., flying into LA for a few days to plunk herself in a skybox for the NBA playoffs).
I think there’s trouble in their marriage, and I think she’s out there looking to do a Jackie Kennedy and find herself a bigger sugar daddy who will buy her her own personal jet so she doesnt have to depend on tacky old Air Force One. As well as a yacht so she can add “Princess Di Wannabe” to her resume as well.

I can’t see him resigning before the end of this term. But I don’t think it is wild to imagine he won’t even run in 2012. His poll numbers are far too low now to win. And what can/will he do to turn them around? “Pivot?” Please. Cooperate with Republican leaders after they make congressional gains or even win one or both houses in November? That would assume he is more motivated by personal ambition or political pragmatism than ideology, and that seems highly unlikely to me. The man oozes disdain for America, its institutions, its people and its founding principles. He won’t pivot. The economy will continue downward, as will unemployment. He will continue to insult and ridicule the public that watched in horror as he dismantles their birthright. And he will use the power of the executive to strike out at this loathsome country will all he has in hi power. He will do as much damage to us as he possibly can in that time. Because that’s who he is. And therefore his polls will continue to get even worse.
His ego is far too massive to enable him to run and lose at all, let alone lose massively, as he surely would in 2012. So he will imperiously quit then, announcing that we don’t deserve him, as we cling to our guns and religion. And then he will follow Bill Clinton and Al Gore, whom he imagines he will far outshine (he already has his Nobel,) onto the international stage and become very rich speaking to well-heeled, gullible bien pensants, who will pay big bucks to hear his strident denunciations of the evil Americans. His campaign to be global messiah will take to the road. The flocking of the international glitterati to Michelle’s party in Spain shows the Obamas the way forward. They want to be rich and glamorous, as they denounce the very nation that ill make it possible.
I predicted (prior to his taking office) that Obama would not complete 4 years, probably being forced to resign because of incompetence and overreaching. I did not think the Dems would legislate so much of his radical agenda, but they have and his resignation seems inevitable to me. He’s in “way over his head”.
Maybe he has a girl friend ( or boy friend) and Michelle is making him and us pay for his sins. Could be a boy friend after all Michelle does look like Rue Paul but with a bigger butt.

XContra, I think I followed it, and I think Roger is saying that Michelle may be as much a narcissist as Barack. If you re-read the description of a narcissist — someone who is incapable of sympathy or empathy — you see the Obamas’ hot air about caring for the little guy and the need for everyone to be frugal vs. their actual behavior. The truth is, they don’t care about squat. They just want to have cool stuff.
I still think you’re wrong. He doesn’t want to “be president” as you and I understand being president, but he wants to “be president” as he understands being president. Ditto for Michelle. Their understanding of being president and first lady is pure privilege and entitlement, with no responsibility to go with it. I also don’t think Michelle thinks that that’s a lot of money to spend on a vacation, because (read her senior thesis) in her mind, all white people live that way.
I don’t think they actually see the way they’re approaching either the lifestyle or the responsibilities of the presidency as any different from the 43 before them. And the “it’s our turn” mentality simply means they get to live high and large, because that’s all the presidency is about. Responsibility is a foreign concept.
I tend to agree with our host here. I see a tremendous amount of ambivalence in OBama’s appearance these days. He seems to be a man who hates what he is doing … depressed, angry and so forth. Is his marriage on the rocks? I don’t know, but it’s possible. I wouldn’t want to live with either of them. Sure, as you say, they have a huge sense of entitlement. But that doesn’t make them happy. Indeed, it often makes people unhappy. Obama must be shocked at how badly he is being received after years of having his you-know-what kissed.
There may be some boozing going on. His eyes are a bit glazed at times.
I think Snork is close to the mark. The Obamas appear to have always inhabited a world full of cartoon notions about the world around them and the people who live in it. You may be onto something, here. Clinton also was exposed to malignant personalities in his formative years – absent biological father, alcoholic-abusive stepfather, mother married 5X. He turned out to be a malignant borderline sociopath as well: narcissistic, philandering husband, sexual predator, smooth-as-silk prevaricator, stepping on people to advance political ambitions. Draw your own conclusions, but all the signs are present.
I never accepted that Clinton was/is a sociopath, because he really needs approval and adulation. There’s some pathology at work there, but it isn’t the narcissist/sociopathic one. He has genuine emotional needs that are met through human contact.
Consider the differing ways Obama and Clinton give speeches, or interact with large groups of people. Obama is always cool and detached, Clinton is engaged. In groups Obama condescendingly and indulgently permits himself to be idolized, but Clinton actually makes contact with individuals. Clinton would happily enter a roomful of people, including political foes, and have a grand time pressing the flesh and chatting with everyone. Obama uses a group to single out and attack those not on board the bandwagon.
Clinton never put on the mien of Philosopher-King or God-Emperor. Can anyone imagine him, with a straight face, claiming to reverse the rise of the seas? If he ever did it, it would be a self deprecating joke. There is no self deprecation in King Barry the First. I was never a fan of Clinton, but he always seemed to me to be fully human, however flawed. Obama is a cipher, a hollow man.

Clinton is a whole lot smarter than Obama. Has anyone noticed Clinton doesn’t really smile when he works a crowd? He drops his jaw which makes it look like smile. Nonetheless I think he likes the crowds.
I just thought of another major difference between Clinton and Obama. For all of his college dorm leftist idealism, Clinton was pragmatic enough to back off and tack to the center once his grand leftist program blew up in his face. Obama accepts no constraints on his actions (“I won”). He appears incapable of honestly examining his assumptions, or accepting that he might possibly be mistaken in anything.
I find it amusing that I am, in essence, defending William Jefferson Clinton. It took an Obama to make me do it.

The 1983 election of Harold Washington as Chicago’s first black mayor — Washington defeated the Irish-fronted, Italian-underwritten, ethnic white “Chicago” Machine — was an Earth-shattering, paradigm-shifting event for black Chicagoans (especially for South Side black Chicagoans), and for Barack Obama in particular. I grew up in Chicagoland, and although I was a young child in 1983, I clearly remember that upon capturing the Mayor’s office, Harold Washington said “Now it’s our turn at the trough.” Well, to the victor goes the spoils, I guess, and although holding the levers of politics/government almost universally equates to having a ticket on the proverbial gravy train, no where is that more nakedly evident than in the Windy City. In Chicago, political clout erases all sins. If you’ve got it, the world is yours. If you don’t have it, you don’t waste your days cursing those who do — you do whatever you can to get it!
Harold Washington may have beaten the Machine, but he wasn’t exactly a “good government” – style reformer. Rather than minimize corruption and graft, he just shifted the home base of corruption and graft to a different neighborhood — from Bridgeport (the notorious South Side mob-controlled Italian/Irish home turf of the Daley clan) to Kenwood/Hyde Park (the South Side home of the University of Chicago and Chicago’s affluent black elite). And although Washington dropped dead in office over 20 years ago, he’s still revered as ever in the black community (particularly on the S. Side).
Current Obama Administration Senior Advisor David Axelrod was a key behind-the-scenes figure in Harold Washington’s political/Mayoral career. And he helped the young Barack Obama transition from his days as an aspiring politician from a heavily black district — albeit one with pockets of wealth and privilege — on the South Side, to being the darling of the downtown business and financial communities, and a fixture on the upper-crust Gold Coast social circuit (for Chicago, that’s like going from Harlem to making it big on the Upper East & West Sides of Manhattan).
Axelrod and the Obamas know that Obama’s core constituencies — minorities, wealthy/educated urban whites, and young/youngish status-obsessed urban SWPLs — won’t be put off by such extravagance. Minorities (mainly blacks) will essentially say “It’s our turn at the trough;” wealthy urban white elites will have their hearts warmed by the romanticism of Michelle’s spending holiday on the Mediterranean (just like our Western European betters do); and status-whoring hipster/SWPL chicks will be treated to tingling memories of that not-so-long-ago semester abroad in Europe (more here: http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2008/02/22/72-study-abroad/) when they shed their “repressive,” middle-American bourgeois shackles and tarted it up for legions of ever-so-sophisticated tall, dark and handsome Mediterranean men (don’t worry, that won’t cause problems at home, as their staus-whoring SWPL/hipster husbands & boyfriends will earn points for proudly reveling in their S.O.s’ feminist empowered-ness).
Long story short: even if the Obamas’ jet-setting doesn’t go over that well with the rest of America, it will likely be long-forgotten by the conclusion of next week’s news cycle. And as for the Obamas themselves (and the Axelrod-Emmanuel-Jarrett, etc. Chicago collective in the White House), they’re doing what Harold Washington did all those years ago — they’re saying “It’s our turn at the trough.”

I and my wife are still blessed to be gainfully employed in this devastating recession, nay depression. I cannot fathom how infuriating it must be for someone who has been struggling to find work in a jobless economy, still pays taxes to the Federal government at the point of a gun, only to see this woman splurging on yet another vacation at taxpayer’s expense.
Has someone taken the time to amass the expenses run up by Barry and Michelle on their junkets to all four corners of the globe? It has to be huge.
I think that the first thing the new majority in Congress should do in January is set about removing these two from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. We cannot afford to keep them their, either fiscally or patriotically.
And don’t you just look forward to having to watching these two for the rest of your natural life, as you continue to pay for their security, their trips to national events such as funerals and other public outings, where they are forever presented as “Precedent and Mrs. Fauxbama”? Sickening. Absolutely sickening.

Emma, I visualize it differently. They are relatively young, and they will have many, many years of watching their “legacy” reversed, reviled, and regretted. The circle in which they travel will be smaller and uglier and less relevant with each passing year. They will be ridiculous in the end. Our familly has also been Fortunate during this economy but we have kept it very quiet and have been very cognizant of those around us as well as cautious with our finances. The lack of empathy for their fellow americans and the circumstances they are in is inexcusable
I think a $375,000 vacation on the luscious beaches of Marbella is not only a well-deserved rest for having supported her husbands’ tireless efforts to bring us hope and change, fundamentally transforming America into something it has never been, but a foreign policy victory – a beautiful, compassionate genture of solidarity with the Socialist government of Spain which is struggling with 30% unemployment. The very least we can do as a grateful nation for the Obamas selfless efforts to spend money to bring us out of a recession should only be rewarded with deep gratitude and luxurious vacations in exotic resorts that need our money too.

My nomination would definitely be when he finally had to say something about the Fort Hood massacre. His reluctance and insincerity were so obvious, I was beyond appalled. Having to act as if he gave a damn about some dead U.S. soldiers obviously pained him–but not near as much as it pained me to watch him!
Barry’s job was to impregnate America with as much socialism and debt as possible in one term. He’s succeeded and what will be born soon will be a generation and culture that’ll make today’s youth look like Minuteman Patriots on steroids. His job is done, so he and Marie can just chill-it for the next couple of years.
Trouble is, they forgot about the Morning After Pill (November elections) where this demon child may hit a wall. Additionally, unlike most embryos, this one lacks traits of both Mom (liberty) and Dad (tyranny) in sufficient quantities to fool the uterus into allowing attachment, thus dooming it from the start. Lady Liberty’s womb will not be tricked into nurturing any pure strains of tyranny.
And that’s where women will play a significant role in the next two elections. They will see how foreign this administration’s policies are to America and how it negatively affects their families and children in particular. Questions like, “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” will be answered with a resounding, “No!”. First, we have precious little of his personal records from college. Members of his class at Columbia don’t remember him. And he had to be the first editor of the Harvard Law Review in history not to write a single brief or article.
Secondly, he has a strangely opaque personal source of money.
Third, he seems to be steered by a group.
Fourth, there have be rumors of experimentation early in his life.
This points to a marriage of convenience strictly for show.

Neither of them cares about a second term. They won the big lotto is the way they see it. They will be well taken care of and protected the rest of their lives and once out of office can spend decades lecturing on how they did all the things liberals have always promised to do. Whether any of those things stick or not, they can be the heroes that the government pampers, protects, and defers to until they draw their last breaths.
Why should they care about a second term? The democrat party has never been radical enough for them so the party being ruined doesn’t matter to them. They were given an upper class lifestyle on a silver platter without even raising a sweat so they can’t even conceive of being any worse off whether in office or out.. And last but not least, they hate the average people in this country, especially successful black folks who see them for the archetypical scam artists they are. That’s what they really mean when they say they aren’t proud of America, they mean they’re not proud of the uppity masses who insufficiently defer to their betters in the ruling elite.
A second term means nothing to them and neither of them has sufficient of contact with reality to consider what impact their actions have on “the masses” they so effectively manipulated in order to arrive at their present position. They don’t think in those terms because it’s all about them, all the time. We’re not dealing with some mildly out of kilter individuals here. We’re being governed by a couple who are, by any normal definition of the word, completely mad and who surround themselves with those who are either equally mad or willing to feed that madness to further their own ends. Why would Michelle or Barry either one consider what the average folks are thinking when they’ve spent their entire lives manipulating and bilking those same people?
After all, when the people of this country elected them, they were voting for a complete unknown and therefore were agreeing that they don’t deserve any consideration beyond the greatness of those they elected. They’ll tell us what we should know and where to send the gifts we should shower them with.
I have long harbored gut feelings that something was terribly wrong with their marriage. The First Lady wears her emotions on her sleeve, and a lot of times on her face. I have never seen a woman with such a terrifying scowl, and sometimes it was directed at the President. Maybe I read too much into it, but it just looked to me like this was a woman who knew her husband was cheating on her, but couldn’t say a damn thing about it.
The holiday in Spain during the President’s birthday speaks volumes. I think the White House is a house divided.

To be fair, although the whole thing sounds excessive, a lot of the cost and inconvenience would have come from the demands of the Secret Service. If she wanted to just book a room in a resort in a foreign country and wander down to the pool they would go nuts.
Of course she could have avoided the controversy by going to the official Presidential retreat. But what does Camp David cost? Does anyone ever ask?
You know, when Michelle Obama gave that contemptible speech during the campaign, in which she declared that the nomination of her husband for the presidency marked the first time in her life that she ever felt proud to be an American, my thoughts ran in a similar direction, though not in a way that would please our First “Lady”. The last year and a half mark the first time in my life where whenever I hear a foreigner openly disrespect the president of the United States, it doesn’t bother me anymore. It’s sad, I know, but at the same time, both Obama and his creepy wife absolutely deserve it. So in an ironic way, the Obama presidency has been personally liberating.
In the future there will be other African-American contenders for the presidency, and good for us that as a nation we have come to this pass. I would only caution the American voter about one thing. The next time we do have a Black (or Hispanic or Asian) presidential contender, please follow Martin Luther King’s advice: Look closely at the content of this character. Don’t just vote for him because of the color of his skin, for that is exactly what happened in 2008, and we have all been paying a terrible price for that catastrophically stupid mistake.

I read up on Obama before he was elected. I watched his debates and saw an indecisive man. I heard his speeches and noted the debating gimmicks (moral equivalent arguments)he used to lead the listner away from the issue he didn’t want to talk about. I listened to him distort what others said and draw false conclusions. It was all there. The MSM and the compulsion to ignore his background to elect the first man of color was overwhelming. Not to me, but to most.
Combine a uniquely destructive, particularly malignant narcissism (His own pseudo-official Obama pre-presidential seal, The office of the president-elect, causing the oceans to recede and healing the planet–my Lord, who thinks that way, let alone acts on it in public?), a hatred of America (a mean nation) by Mrs. Obama that is clearly shared by Mr. Obama (serial apologies and bows), an insanely outsized sense of entitlement paired with significant racial resentment (despite benefiting in every measurable, meaningful way from the American system) and everything Mr. and Mrs. Obama are doing makes perfect sense. To the degree that behavior motivated by such lunatic, base motivations can be said to make sense, that is.
Obama wants to be president because of the opportunity for power, and above all else, self aggrandizement, the position offers. He has demonstrated no respect for the office, for its responsibilities, for the Constitution, for the American people, or for more than two centuries of treaties, alliances, obligations and responsibilities not only to the nation, but to the world. Despite how many Europeans sniff and piffle at America, they have adopted our culture and our language, and truth be told, if the immigration gates were thrown totally open in every direction, not just toward the southern border, the nation might well sink under the weight of those rushing here in any and every way possible. Remember his functionaries, shortly after the inauguration, complaining that Mr. Obama really didn’t realize how–well, how hard and stressful the job was! Apparently being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for accomplishing nothing whatever (Recall Obama’s response? Yes, I’ve accomplished nothing, but I’ll accept it anyway because, well, because I’m me) is more mentally debilitating than anyone imagined. Since, we have learned–from his supporters, mind you–that he was just awfully bored with his position as a US Senator, so brilliant and restless is he, with the obvious implication that he also finds the presidency a bit pedestrian and beneath his talents.
Barack Obama is clearly a man who believes himself not only entitled to ultimate power and all of the expensive, ostentatious trappings that come with it, but is simultaneously a man who has never held a real job. He has never learned the virtues and practices of discipline, responsibility, reliability (getting up at a specific hour, working for 8 hours, etc.), working long and hard toward a goal (notice his barely concealed anger and impatience whenever he cannot immediately get his way in things small and great merely by uttering his desire), and all of the necessary traits that comprise a fully functioning adult, traits that are normally learned and mastered, to one degree or another, by the early 20s. Remember too that this is a man whose primary adult occupation was that of “community organizer,” a job he admitted in his two (?!) autobiographies (Ben Franklin was satisfied with one, and he admitted that he was not morally perfect) could not actually be defined to his close friend. What sort of “job,” apart from classified work on behalf of the government, is it that one cannot, in at least some minimal way, describe to others? “So Bob, it’s good to meet you. What do you do?” “Well, I’m a community organizer.” “Ah. And what does that entail?” “Well, I really don’t know.” What would any responsible adult think of anyone like that?
Will he spend taxpayer money for nights on the town, golf outings, vacation after vacation? Socialists don’t believe it’s our money anyway, add to that the absolute convictions that as the self-annointed elite, they know better than the peasants what to do with the peasant’s money, and that one is entitled to whatever they want and the concept of taxpayer money, as we taxpayers might conceive of it, is a quant conceit indeed.
Too many are making the mistake of judging Obama’s actions in relation to those of a “normal” politician, even a normal–and by that I mean a predictably liberal/socialistic democrat. Truly, even most hard leftists would hesitate to do as Obama is doing. Their advisors would labor to convince them that ostentatious vacations and private jets for dogs certainly won’t play well among the gun and God clingers and might even annoy some who are left of center. They would all have an eye on the polls and would not do most of what Obama has done and what he wants to do because electoral success and the maintenance of power are their goals. Obama’s are much, much bigger, for he is much much bigger than any man, any goal, any nation, perhaps even mankind. When Oprah Winfrey dubbed him “The One,” one could easily be forgiven for imagining that he smiled and thought, “well, at least someone finally got it right.”
We make a fundamental mistake when we judge Obama by the norms of human political conventions, shame and embarrassment. He is bound by none of these, and likely, they cross his mind fleetingly, when imposed upon him by worried advisors, if at all. Re election? But of course he’ll be elected. Who would not want to re elect The One? The danger–and there are multiple dangers–is that such self absorption by necessity diverts all concern and attention from such trivial (by comparison with the aggrandizement and pleasure of The One) concerns as war, peace, national security, economic decline, the rule of law and upholding the Constitution. In assuming that some people have a conscience and that it directs their decisions and behaviors for the good, we make another fundamental error.
There’s an old axiom among writers of science fiction. Aliens can never be fully, meaningfully understood by human beings because they are–alien. In significant ways, so is Barack Obama, to moral men and women of conscience and honor.

As a pathological narcissist, a state I claim he probably moved into as a young boy, Obama is incapable of direct and equal relations with anyone. His only interaction is to control the other person. He uses three key tactics: misinformation (lies); emotional manipulation – and accusations of your being biased (political, racial) if you continue to resist his control. This behaviour is his ONLY mode of behaviour.
He is, as Mike points out, unable to work in a normal way – with a focus on ‘things’ (facts, theory, research, running a business). He can only manipulate people. He gets bored because he is unable to focus on and is disinterested in facts, analysis, history, theory; that’s because these entities are not open to personal manipulation as are people.
Americans have made and continue to make a grave error in judging Obama as if he were a normal human being. He is not; he is severely psychologically damaged. He is incapable of feeling any relation with issues – which include matters of war, border security, jobs and employment, the American Constitution. Nothing. Again, that’s because these are ‘issues’ or ‘things’– not people whom he can manipulate and control. And if he cannot control someone or something – that entity ceases to exist for Obama. Literally, actually – it has no existence.
The Constitution is a ‘thing’; it has no existence for Obama; the border and the rule of law have no existence for Obama. All that matters to him is his action of manipulating people to be within his control. So, he’ll seek amnesty for illegals because that puts them all in his control! That’s the only reason – not empathy, not law, not anything…just the result of them being in his control.
He is run, I maintain, by radical socialists. Obama himself has no intellectual interest in the theories of democracy or socialism. He is politically embedded in socialism only because it sets up an elite class of Rulers over the Peasants. These radicals want to insert a statist rule in the USA.
My concern is that the Gang who run Obama, and Obama, are both quite ready to divert criticism of him (and Obama can’t accept criticism)..to Congress. They’ll let Congress take the fall.
Then – this will set up the next stage – and I’m beginning to wonder if the Obama Gang has preplanned these stages…, which is where Obama will start to rule by Executive Fiat. We’ve already seen his contempt for Congress (and the people) in his insistence that it pass His Bills without reading or debate. The next stage is Executive Fiat, where he will rule without the Will of the People. He’ll reject Congress as ‘anti-American’ and an ‘obstacle to progress’. That’s my fear of what will happen in November.

I wouldn’t count on Obama being relected. Carter was as bad in many way and he didn’t get a second term. I would like to see a comparison of the costs of vacations the Obamas have taken versus those taken by, say, the Bush family. It would put this in perspective… and I suspect that the costs are much higher to squire the Obamas around than the Bush visits, but just saying “I suspect” has no validity. Of course it is conjecture when speculating about motives but the circumstances of his election, negates the reality of their worldview that Americans are evil racists. This coupled with the actual demands of the job (being president is about making decisions which is real work), the abject failure of his (their) policies to produce results, the deterioration of his (their) public adoration, all generates a disconnect from their adopted world view. The one way to put reality back in line with that world view is to prove that we are not worthy of him as president by losing the re-election. Then, truth will be restored and America will be the bigoted, racist country he knew we were all along. If a Republican First Lady took a vacation like this (while wearing designer clothing,) the Administration would be the subject of hundreds of scathing articles. I don’t think anything is wrong with their marriage. Obama was probably SUPPOSED to go along, originally, but as they read the polls and the economy continued to be a ‘concern’ they decided she could get away with it and he would look like a hard working man of the people if he stayed behind. They are TONE DEAF. I think they thought they could say she was paying for her room and that would be that, no one would mind, in fact, people would think they were SUPER! Look!!! During the campaign, I was amazed that the Obama posters bore a striking similarity to the posters of Mussolini and Stalin. Firm jaw pointing up with the subject of the poster looking downward at the viewer.
As the campaign gained momentum, it occurred to me that Obama believed himself to be above the office of the President. That he was not be elevated by the office but that his mere presence would elevate the office. This was not a person for whom the Presidency would have been the high point in his life.
Looking at his history, this was not a man who held any full-time job for very long and the jobs that he did hold for more than a four years were essentially part-time jobs – lecturer and State Senator.
He seemed to float from job to job, usually upward, without any achievements to show for his time in that position. He was advanced on the promise of great things that never came to pass.
His initial entry into elective politics was one in which the outcome was preordained by his tactic of getting all other candidates removed from the ballot. He never had to work hard to get elected that first time. His later attempt to be elected to the House was against someone who did not roll over for Barack and Barack lost that election.
He is a part-time President who is already looking toward his next job.
It would surprise me if he were to resign from the office before the first primary – why take a chance of getting beaten?

The body posturing, the elaborate set with Styrofoam columns, the adulterated Pepsi logo[big corporate sponsor?] all reminded me of Axis era art. The viewer is diminished and the subject is cast as all powerful. I found it very, very creepy. Completely obvious media fawning made it more so, but sadly, most folks wanted to go with the ‘popular’, ‘in’, ‘cool’ candidate.

He has the same poise as Musulini in his photos because of the way he swings his head from side-to-side when he reads his two teleprompters. He pauses for effect at the end of each swing of the head with his head held upward. That’s how they photograph him. His downward voice inflection and over enouciation of the last word in a sentence is a sign of insecurity. He doesn’t want to be questioned.

The sad fact of politics is that the least informed have formed the the swing vote in elections. Often something trivial will alter their view of a candidate. Often it is some simplistic catch phrase or visual image that grabs them. These days with the Internet, at least in my opinion, it has gotten more dangerous for a politician to open his mouth or do something visually inappropriate because cell phones with cameras and stored words and images are everywhere. Images of the first lady swanking it up could be quite damaging if the economy is even more in the tank come late October.
Hillary is his only worry at this point..no matter what happens with Michelle. we won’t hear much so as to preserve the “historic” presidency

Some people care about birthdays, and some don’t. I don’t think it’s that unusual for a couple pushing 50 to really care about it other than a phone call to each other if they’re apart, so I don’t really see this as a snub to Barack from Michelle. I think it’s the whole “get it while the gettin’s good,” attitude. They don’t give a damn what the little people think. That’s been evident- from policies to attitude and everything in between. If this were a “vacation” then I wouldn’t mind so much. Isn’t just one of the daughters there? Throw in Barry and the entourage wouldn’t be much bigger, so the additional cost wouldn’t be much more, or if so that’s fine. The grating part is that only one daughter is there when there should be both for that cost AND he’s taking another 5-7 days at the end of August at Martha’s Vineyard for a “family” vacation.
I don’t begrudge the guy if he wants to take a vacation, because as POTUS he’s always on the job. But the optics of him puttzing around the vineyard, perhaps on Kerry’s boat, after just having sent his wife and daughter to Spain for a million bucks is horrible optics. And doing so within two weeks of their return. This is a great ad for the GOP, though not as much had he also gone to Spain.
In a summer when many, many families have eliminated vacation all together, this presents a communications nightmare IMHO. Weren’t they just down in Florida and the Gulf coast a few weeks ago for a few days, now Spain and soon to be Martha’s. At the end of the day, the August jobs numbers and the GDP for Q3 will determine whether there is a good possibilty of a GOP takeover or a complete tsunami-tidal-wave extinction of many dems. Since the Oct jobs number will come out after Nov-2, even a large increase in jobs in Sep won’t help if August is horrible because the narrative will have been set in.
Finally, Republicans need to drill the fact and answer any Chrissy Mathews type questions about budgets, tax cuts, etc., with “Chris, if we had passed tax cuts in the amount of this Stimulus and continued children of Stimulus and saw the same economic growth as we are seeing, would you term those cuts a disaster?” And when he replies about the last eight years, refer him to Fannie & Freddie and point out the CRA. This economic experiment that we’ve had in the last 18 months should be the final nail in all Keynesian advocates coffins, Mr. Krugman’s particularly.

With all due respect, you are barking up the wrong tree. Why is it that now even conservatives buy into the “Psychologizing” of everything and everybody we disagree with? This is an old liberal canard along the lines of “this makes no sense, so he must be sick.”
The President and his handlers/followers have decided that such use of money does not matter to the people who elected him or will vote for him in 2012. If they were ever called on this by a major news outlet, or in a press briefing, they would say, “Well, every other President has done it (true or not) and so why are you just like Rush Limbaugh in attacking the President,” or any other stock line.
It is the attitude of a liberal; they are privileged, you are not, so I can do what I want.
The 2008 election showed that voters didn’t care; they voted for the President anyway, even though this type of behavior was obvious to anyone who looked at him. Bill Clinton was the same way, and even FDR did it too. It never affected their popularity.

The sense of entitlement was always clear and even understandable (I mean, who wouldn’t develop such a sense when he’s been furnished an elite education, presided over a prestigious law review, advanced goodly sums for an autobiographical book and patronized for a meteoric rise in politics all because he’s an articulate, bright, clean, nice-looking black guy). It’s the abject tone deafness that astonishes me. I realized he didn’t “get it” after one of his first sit-down interviews as president. He said the only thing that had gotten under his skin in the first few months was the sniping he took for “date night” in NYC. It really fried his butt (my words) that he couldn’t take his wife out on a date whenever and wherever he pleased without getting pilloried in the media. The inconvience, difficulties, hardship and expense incurred by others were utterly beside the point. Narcissism, entitlement and tone deafness are not a winning combination.

Does this article need a 120th comment? Yes, because the most obvious problem with it has not been mentioned yet: “Michelle’s $375,000 Vacation”? More than that amount I am sure was spent in simply planning this trip. By the time it was over, I’ll bet the cost to taxpayers was 100 times that amount. If you do the true cost accounting you need to allocate a portion of the overhead for support staff and for the very expensive capital equipment that was utilized. You need to add in the cost for the people who spent the previous several months totally pre-occupied with setting this up. I am sure the travel budget of an average small company was exceeded simply by the people who pre-traveled to scope out the situation.
I recall reading an analysis during the Clinton administration of one of his official trips to a foreign country. Two Air Force Ones were prepared identically in case one had problems. That meant that everything was duplicated – crew, staff, etc.. Even the meals and the place settings for the entire trip had to be precisely duplicated. The waste in movement of government figures is immense. For a reasonable first lady to make this trip there would have to be some incredibly important justification – especially while many of the rest of us are decidedly not eating cake.
Michelle took Sasha with her and left Malia home, supposedly to attend Summer Camp. Like I’m sure a Presidents kid prefers Summer Camp over hob-nobing with the “Rich & Famous” at a Five Star Hotel on “Fantasy Island”, entertainment provided by the Worlds pre-emminent celebrities and latte with the King and Queen of Spain. Think about it!!! There’s something in that alone that begets serious questions. Which child has loyalty toward which parent and exactly, what kind of “statement” is it making???

Here’s another theory, that a wise woman I know shared with me. It seemed so odd that she went on this trip on the very week of her husband’s birthday. And brought lots of friends, held essentially a big celebratory party, but without the guest of honor. Why would this happen? Mrs Obama seems like the kind of person who LOVES birthdays, and she delights in celebrating her wonderful husband, (which makes her look SO good).
So this woman thought maybe he WAS supposed to go too, the trip had originally been planned exactly as a triumphal birthday celebration for their beloved president, abroad, away from the messiness of domestic politics, with Euro society reporters instead of the boring Presidential Press Corps leading coverage. And somewhere there are no Republicans or Tea Partiers.
But his staff made clear to him just how politically toxic such an imperial birthday trip would be seen back in Peoria, (where the unemployed are still clinging to their guns and religion). So the trip as planned was OUT. But Michele had already invited her 40 closest friends to join the happy couple on this triumphal tour, and she wasn’t about to uninvite them, nor would the President tell her she had to.
I guess this would mean our leader is a man who can’t tell Mrs O she has to sacrifice one of her vacations for the sake of our beloved country

The presidency is at least two jobs. One is highly ceremonial, doing the ribbon cutting sort of thing. The other is being a leader. Clearly, the ceremonial part of the job bores Obama to tears. For instance, when the national peace officers’ organization held its annual meeting in Washington, D.C., or quite recently, when the Boy Scouts of America held its Jamboree nearby, Obama found it preferable to play basketball or to appear on a TV talk show. The leadership part must be more stressful for Obama, the impostor, when he can only pose as a leader like an actor on a stage. Most agree, he does not have substantial leadership experience from which to draw. (If only we could have someone with years of leadership experience such as Eisenhower. Yes, Ike golfed to give America a sense of normalcy, but behind the scenes he kept his subordinates in line. He was a master at exercising power.)
Whatever Obama’s misgivings about the presidency, NOT being President after having been the President must be a miserable prospect—-an especially horrible prospect for a narcissist. I think Hillary Clinton said something about being the center of the political universe along these lines: “It is really something to have Air Force One immediately begin to take off the moment YOU take your seat and buckle your seat belt.”
In Great Britain, there is a reason Queen Elizabeth does not abdicate in favor of her aging son, Prince Charles. In Zimbabwe, there is a reason Mugabe kills and tortures all of his opponents in order to hold onto power. In Soviet Russia, there was a reason Stalin ordered the deaths of millions. In Nazi Germany, there was a reason Hitler allowed the country and its people to be destroyed and vanquished by the Allies, before killing himself. On a more mundane level, there is a reason wealthy men and women establish estate plans with trust restrictions that can last for years. Certainly, pathology can play a role. But, power has its own rules and requirements. Just as most of us fight to keep the grim reaper at bay rather than committing suicide, holding and exercising power for as long as possible has its own rewards.
Therefore, I believe Obama will seek re-election. Whether he is defeated then, or when he ends his second term, Obama will be faced with his own demons and will suffer his own personal depression. I doubt, however, he will ever gain any personal insight into himself. Perhaps Bill Ayers will find insight for him when writing yet another Obama memoir.
Time will reveal Obama to be a fool who was in over his head, unless some madman manages to assassinate him in the meantime. That outcome would be good for Obama’s poll numbers. so to speak, but incredibly bad for the country. Let us pray that Obama lives to a ripe old age and suffers along with the rest of us under the rationed medical care that awaits us.

Obama’s thirst for power and the adulating masses (if any remain) may cause him to seek a 2nd term. However, there is the Michelle factor. She’s unlikely to want to put off the big bucks that an ex-president earn when they leave office. She may want to reap them sooner than later.
It didn’t get much play but Wikileaks first ask the WH if it were okay to release those 70K pages of War Reports. The WH had no response. It was released and the WH only reaction was that everyone knows about what’s in those reports anyway. Well, the Pentagon now wants them back. They do name people in Afghan who may lose their lives as a result. This is another incompetent action by the WH. Do they really give a damn? Then we have Gibbs with his comment that the negative vote in MO on Obamacare “meant nothing.” Could there be any better proof that this WH doesn’t give a damn what the American people think or want?
Obama and his wife got power through the Chicago Dem machine. He became the protege of Emil Jones. Jones steered important committee assignments and placed Obama’s name on choice pieces of legislation (even though Obama did no actual work on them). In Chicago the unofficial motto of the city is ‘Where’s Mine?’. Obama ‘got his’ though his Machine connections. Michelle got a cushy job with the University of Chicago where once her husband got the US Senate position she receuved a huge promotion and raise.
These and other things gave the Obama the typical politician’s sense of their being above the masses. They played the game and the voters kept buying the BS. You have this same ‘political royalty’ in Detroit, New York, LA, etc. The ‘rulers’ feel they can do anything and the voters overlook reality and protect their ‘king’, even though the ‘king’ is corrupt and robbing the people blind.
I think Obama to a certain extent is a puppet following orders from higher up that are served to him not as orders but as the way things have to go now. Part of the game plan, or maybe the whole game plan being fed him is the destruction of the US as the greatest world power ever seen — philopsophically, religiously, politically, economically, militarily, You name it. The termites eating out the underpinnings have been having an uninterrupted feast for years, the Red Menace of the Cold War being but the most recent manifestation. My concern is that the imperial behavior of both Obamas means that they DO have a plan for Obama to suspend the Constitution and remain in power for life. You do not have to consider the feelings of voters when there will be no vote — or you know in advance it is rigged to favor you.
