Before making our travel reservations, we lovers of Korean food await word on the restaurant plans at the finally-to-be-completed “Hotel of Doom” in Pyongyang.
For those in the Los Angeles area, where there is plenty of great Korean food, rogerlsimon.com gives its official three forks (or three chopsticks) to Park Restaurant (we like it even better than the LATimes does).

I’d be more than willing to try a Korean restaurant if I could find one where I felt welcome. Hell, I expect it in the Chinese restaurants but afterall we saved the Southern part of the peninsula and should be given more respect when we have to eat food like kimchi.
Well, this is definitely YMMV, promoguy, because I have eaten in perhaps two dozen Korean restaurants in LA – some all Korean clientele, some not – and never had a problem, except sometimes communicating about dishes with non-English speakers. One of the pleasures of living in this overcrowded city is that it is one of the best places in the world for ethnic food, Korean among the best.
Oddly enough I live in the middle of nowhere and we have ethnic restaurants in every little town nearby. I would put up the nearby Thai restaurant against any in the country. When I attend conferences I always go to a local highly rated Thai place.
I suspect they’d be happy to be able to get kaegogi.
Promoguy, you might find you get treated better if you don’t go in saying “when we have to eat food like kimchi”.
Which is, just by the way, the Food of the Gods.
Obviously Charlie, we don’t honor the same (G)(g)od. Mine is guacamole and it better have a taste of jalapenos.

Ah Thai. One of the best parts of living out here in the barrio of Van Nuys is the nearness of the many local Thai restaurants. All along Sherman Way, closeby the Thai temple which has some great food at the food concession stands. Good stuff.
Promoguy, I totally agree on the food at the concession stands at the Thai Temple, but I promise you, if you get into kimchi, you will be amazed. It may also be “the founatin of youth.” (not entirely kidding)
Try a Thai restaurant called “Ginger” at the far western end of Sherman Way in the San Fernando Valley or
more recently opened in Pasadena, great food and atmosphere. Delicious made Kimchi.
How can anyone hate on the Ryugyong aka “Hotel of Doom” in Pyongyang?
