I could say you heard it here first, but that would be self-inflating on the level of, well, Al himself, but Joe Klein is creating more Gore buzz in Time today. Of course Klein’s equivocating. That’s his job. As is calling McCain a “flagrantly flawed” candidate. (Compared to Hillary and Obama?) Nevertheless, Gore is beginning to look more and more like a potential Democratic nominee. Another month or so they may be begging for him to run.

Al Gore will not save the Democratic Party. If nothing else, many black voters will still believe that “Barry” Obama got stabbed in the back. They won’t perceive Gore as some sort of compromise—but part of the conspiracy against their guy. Once again, it behooves me to remind people of this indisputable fact: the Democrats must get their normal ninety percent of the black vote to win on Election Day. Even a relatively small drop would spell disaster.
I believe Gore had his chance and would have easily beat either Hillary or Obama back at the start but now… Now I wouldn’t be surprised if folks attack Klein for the insinuation that only a white man can win.

The irony of giving Gore the nomination would be that it would piss off two major Democrat identity groups. From what I’ve read, many blacks will be upset if Hillary gets the nomination because they see one of their own getting pushed aside by a white woman. At the same time, I’ve read that some of the feminists supporting Hillary are mad because they think a “qualified woman” (in their opinion, not mine) is being pushed aside by a man.
Gore is a white man. He would piss off both groups to the point their heads would explode. That alone would be worth the price of the popcorn.
That said, one of the Democrats biggest problems is their hell bent tendency to look backward for solutions. The Clintons counted on exactly this tendency when Hillary Clinton began her campaign: she was absolutely convinced she was a lock for the nomination because she knew dutiful Democrats would fondly recall the 1990′s and just assume all we needed to do was elect another Clinton and voila – it’s the 90′s again (well…maybe not everything about the 90′s – just the good stuff).
I love nostalgia as much as the next person, but what evidence is there that Gore could do better if given another shot?
On the other hand, an Obama/Gore ticket has always interested me. Gore brings executive experience, foreign policy chops and is the world’s leader on climate change issues. Obama/Gore…..now that is interesting.
