McCain on his way out

March 25, 2007 - 8:32 am - by Roger L Simon

I have heard various rumors that the McCain for President campaign is de facto over and today’s Hotline report on the candidate’s poor fund-raising only makes them seem true. Campaign strategist John Weaver was left to pick up the pieces. “These are moments, none of which at the end of the day impact winning the nomination. We’re on track to do that. Every campaign would trade places with us. We wouldn’t trade places with anyone else.”

Okay, John, it is so if you think so. Meanwhile, in the non-Pirandello real word, things look pretty grim for the Arizona Senator.

I never thought McCain had much chance of winning an election, but I feared that he could do real damage with a hard run at the nomination. If true, this news is good news.
McCain just did not have the firm support of any of the various conservative constituencies. Even as a proven Vietnam War hero, a man of incredible courage and dignity, he managed to anger a very large segment of the veteran community by attacking those who wanted to remind America of Kerry’s complete Vietnam War history.
Good riddance for his presidential ambitions.

Pity. I looked forward to voting against McCain in the primary next year. Too bad, so sad, but he was never going to get my vote.

I’m old enough to remember that Nixon was not only through, but buried—”You won’t have Dick Nixon to kick around any more.” Nobody was out like our boy Dickie and you know what happened there….. McCain may start looking better and better once the dirty laundry on Rudy comes out. Gingrich knows the score on his personal darkness and has bowed out without bowing in. And McCain has that unassailable resume’.
