But I’m not going to give up this. [Of course it could explain your "temporary memory loss".-ed. Who?]

On the subject of Mercury poisoning; if this is indeed true, it will be a BIGGER story relatively soon with world-wide implications that won’t be pretty:

Well, if you find yourself dying of sushi-poisoning, you can at least enjoy some fugu without having to worry. Fugu is said to be delicious, though reviews are oddly few.

Never did like sushi and don’t see the big deal. I’ll take a nice deep fried chimichanga anyday.

Yeh–the best places to order those are anywhere within a few blocks of a good well-equipped ER.

I’ve always been afraid of the raw fish but I like the sushi with vegetables in it. Is the seaweed still safe to eat?

So you won’t give up eating bait, Roger?

    Whatever floats your boat. ;-p

Buddy, give me a break. You know damn well that at anytime in the 60′s, or even ’70′s that when you got through drinking at 2.00 a.m. the last thing you were thinking about was eating raw fish.

Even today at almost 62 years of age and my new found love for lipitor, that chimichanga goes down just fine.

More fearmongering… Keep eating your sushi, Roger, I’m sure going to.

Buried in the third-from-last paragraph in
    this fearmongering story
    :

“The only cases of poisoning of methyl mercury from the consumption of fish that have ever been reported are from Japan and they’re from 1960s,” Dr. Myers told UPI. The Seychelles study is “one of the largest epidemiological studies to look at this issue. We have not been able to find adverse effects.”

Here’s a longer report from Dr. Myers:

“We have also examined the association between the children’s postnatal MeHg exposure and the 6 primary test outcomes at 5??years of age. With several of these outcomes the children did slightly better as the MeHg increased. This cannot be due to the MeHg, so we believe that the MeHg level may simply be a marker for fish consumption at these low exposures. This may confirm our understanding that fish contains nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids that are important for brain development.”

In a nutshell, mercury occurs naturally in fish. At these levels it’s not harmful. The harmful levels have resulted from industrial pollution, and those have not occurred since the 1960s.

So Columbus isn’t exactly a fount of good sushi, but we had some great rolls last night. Tuna/Shrimp Tempura/Eel inside out roll with flying fish roe coating the outside and a salmon, tuna, roll with white tuna on the outside.

And tomago stuffed with rice and roe for a finish.

The only downside was when I accidentally poured a little of the soy sauce into my Saki (the Saki and Soy were in nearly identical pitchers… and it was my 6th cup or so…)
