The Mesopotamian Rumor Mill

January 22, 2005 - 3:55 pm - by Roger L Simon

I don’t know what to make of this AP report that continues to flog the rumor that terror master Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is in the custody of the Iraqi government. I’m skeptical, but stranger things have happened.

Iraq’s interior minister on Saturday refused to comment on rumors that the top terror leader in the country had been taken into custody.

“I wouldn’t like to comment for the time being,” Interior Minister Falah al-Naqib said when asked about rumors that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had been arrested. “Let’s see. Maybe in the next few days we will make a comment about it.”

Pressing him, a reporter asked, “Does that mean he is in custody?”

“No comment,” the minister repeated.

  1. ìíNo comment,í the minister repeated.î

Damn it, why canít he be an American? A ìno commentî response in this country virtually guarantees that theyíve got the scum bag. Alas, what does this mean when an Iraqi says the same thing? Iím going out on a limb, however, and bet that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has been arrested.

  2. I am going to reserve judgement at this time. Rumors have a life of their own in the ME, and I want more confirmation.

  3. 3. Terrye

They could have had him for a month. How would you know?

He could be dead as far as that is concerned. And at the risk of sounding unChristian wouldn’t that be a relief?

  4. 4. richard mcenroe

Well, it just wouldn’t be Christmas without the waiting. I can be patient.

  5. 5. PeterUK

Rather a good move, the good guys know for certain whether they have him and many of the bad guys don’t,it will be bad for morale and require a lot of confidence building by Zarqawi if he is free.

  6. Peter is correct. If Zarqawi is alive and free, then he will have to do actions to reassert his authority which will raise his profile, making it easier for us to catch him.

The Iraqis are an intelligent and resourceful people.

It’s patently obvious that being forthright with the western press produces Abu Ghraib.

    Zarqawi will surface–or not.

  8. 8. richard mcenroe

Of course, the fact that AP is pushing the story mitigates against it being true…

  9. 9. Old Dad

And an announcement that the butcher is in prison the day before the election would do nothing to inhibit voter turnout.

  10. 10. Dave

Boy, it’d sure be nice if they did have that SOB.

I doubt he’d be real brave while having a chat with Iraqi security or the Jordanians. Of course, he isn’t that damn brave anyway, after all, murdering the helpless is not exactly the stuff of heroes, is it?

One thing, let’s hope no one puts panties on his head. Oh, the horror.

    Richard,

We shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth, this is the first time one of the MSM has done anything vaguely useful.

If they do have him the best thing to do is claim he sang like a bird then release him with smiles and handshakes. His friends will do the rest.

  12. 12. Tropean

    I question the timing.

This is clearly designed to take our attention off of the President’s Inauguration day Satanic slip.

  13. 13. Lem

PeterUK put his paws upon it.

My two cents are that he is probably, most likely, not in custody. It would be impossible for a catch that big to be kept secret. The rumor is a prop familiar to radio talk show hosts of all stripes. You say something “interesting” enough to generate calls. You say he’s caught, somebody says he’s not, how do you know? asks a third.

We are heavily invested in this venture. I hope they are doing more than just not using their real names.

The rantburgers are having fun w/this:

Most interesting, considering the Thursday broadcast is possibly a fraud.

    Hammoribi:

The voice tape broadcasted by Al-Jazeera TV claimed to be for Abo-Mosab Al-Zarbawi is actually fabricated.

It is not done by Al-Zarqawi but by one among his followers in Syria or in Jordan. It may have been done inside the studios of Al-Jazeera TV.

And Rantburg’s got the young lady w/the accordion out if necessary.

    Way off T

There is a snow storm here so I’m stuck watching ‘the opposite of sex’ on Sundance on a saturday night.

I’ve seen it before but there are some lines that are worth (even if they are gay) a second look. Not to mention my adoration for Christina Ricci.

Not to mention my adoration for Christina Ricci.

Who would ever have thought that she and Lacey Chabert would have turned out to be so hot?

  18. 18. Samuel

All I have to say is if this is the case then my main hope is that if it so benefits the cause of freedom and further delivers us critical information pertaining to the WOT that Zarqawi be administered all the supposed torture techniques Democrats are falsely accusing Albert Gonzalez of championing.

There’s a neat book thread over at Little Green Footballs for you shut-ins…

“she and Lacey Chabert would have turned out to be so hot”

    What?

Christina Ricci and the little girl in “lost in space” the movie? – You cannot be serious?

    Have they done anything together?

    Please I must know.

  21. 21. Charlie (Colorado)

Christina Ricci and the little girl in “lost in space” the movie? – You cannot be serious?

I’m serious. Now, I’ll grant you that she’s still at that difficult age — too young to date, but too old to adopt. (But legal — she was born in ’82.)

As to whether she and Christina Ricci have ever done anything together, I don’t even know if they swing that … oh, wait, you mean in films, don’t you?

  22. 22. Charlie (Colorado)

    Christina Ricci. For completeness.

  23. 23. Lem

I don’t know what I mean – I mean they both take my breath away.

Here they are manga-ised in a spanish speaking site (i’m got some esl) so I got comprende?

  24. Charlie(Co),

Not old enough to date? but you said she was legal. I see no obsticles to dating. (Outside of the maintence bills, even if she weren’t from Hollywood)

  25. 25. PeterUK

How you can bring yourselves to think about gorgeous girls when you could be thinking about a Middle Easter Hannibal Lecter I do not know.

  26. 26. Charlie (Colorado)

How you can bring yourselves to think about gorgeous girls when you could be thinking about a Middle Easter Hannibal Lecter I do not know.

The bad part about this is that there are so many smart-ass remarks to be made that I can’t even choose.

  27. 27. Charlie (Colorado)

Not old enough to date? but you said she was legal. I see no obsticles to dating.

Sadly, your opinion does not appear to be shared by 23 year old women.

Or any women, for that matter.
