When You’re In Love, The Whole World Is Jewish
Okay, Roger, help out this Gentile:
Who is James Concord Douglas ?
Who is Ponoman (or is it, as Google suggests, Ponaman)?
Pablo,
I’m not Roger, but I’ll try:
For “James Concord Douglas,” read, “James Caan, Kirk Douglas.”
For “Ponoman,” read “Paul Newman.”
Makes a bit more sense this way, no? Phonetics are the bane of a lot of earnest stabs at lyric-decipherment, as in the famous Jimi Hendrix lyric, ” ‘Scuse me while I kiss this guy!”
Help this poor Catholic out. The lyrics refer to a couple of folks as “half Jewish”. I had always thought that it was impossible to be half Jewish; if your mother was Jewish, you were Jewish, otherwise not (except for converts).
Also, I don’t think Rod Carew is Jewish, although his wife is and his daughter was.
Jim,
You are accurate W/R/T to Jewish law. However, culuturally, many Jews define themselves as “half-Jewish” when either of their parents is Jewish.
I believe Rod Carew went through the formal conversion process, but you can check me on that.
Thank you, Lefty. I’m not terribly concerned about Rod Carew’s religion, actually; I just remember reading something that said that the lyrics had that fact wrong. I may be remembering wrong, or whoever wrote what I read may be wrong.
The famous Jewish men listed are obviously quite successful in many diverse fields too, if you read the accompanying Google text linked Ad’s to the right you’ll learn that Robert Redford has a furniture line:

Actually, Adam Sandler (or someone appearing to be the man) has posted the lyrics himself. I had a post about this around 10 days ago. The link to the lyrics and the reason for my post are there, along with the Tom Lehrer Hanukkah lyrics.
