How to Turn a tragedy into an emetic
A question for the metaphysicians and cultural pathologists: just how low can former-economist Paul Krugman, hysteric-in-chief for The New York Times, go?
Yesterday’s homicidal rampage in Tucson, which left (as of this writing) six dead and another thirteen wounded, may give us an approximate answer.
A nine-year-old girl was one of those murdered. So was John Roll, a federal judge who was appointed by George H.W. Bush.
And as all the world knows by now, one of the casualties was Gabrielle Giffords, the forty-year-old Blue-Dog Democrat, who was seriously wounded when Jared Lee Loughner, an ostentatiously disturbed 22-year-old, shot her point-blank through the head. Giffords remains in critical condition but — a ray of light in this ghastly episode — her doctors are optimistic about her recovery.
Loughner’s pistol was probably still warm when Krugman wheeled into print in an effort to make political capital out of the tragedy. “Assassination Attempt in Arizona” should join that rogues’ gallery of disgusting Times stories that wallow in the gutter of political innuendo and mendacity even as they preen themselves on their exhibition of holier-than-thou virtue.
The folks at Powerline instantly got to the crux of the matter with The Contemptible Krugman, noting that he was among the first to “seek political advantage from mass murder.” Krugman’s column, they show, belongs to the Lillian Hellman species of utterance as described by Mary McCarthy: everything he wrote is a lie, including “and” and “the.” “We don’t have proof yet that this was political,” Krugman begins, “but the odds are that it was.”
John at Powerline asks the right questions: “Really? Based on what?” Here’s what Krugman — or, in Powerline’s apt epithet, “hack columnist Paul Krugman” — offers by way of evidence:
She’s been the target of violence before. And for those wondering why a Blue Dog Democrat, the kind Republicans might be able to work with, might be a target, the answer is that she’s a Democrat who survived what was otherwise a GOP sweep in Arizona, precisely because the Republicans nominated a Tea Party activist. (Her father says that “the whole Tea Party” was her enemy.) And yes, she was on Sarah Palin’s infamous “crosshairs” list.
As John notes, “there is zero evidence that any of this had anything to do with Jared Loughner, who had no known connection to the Tea Party, the Republican Party, Sarah Palin, the Democratic Party, or anything else related to sane politics.”
Let’s pause over Hack Columnist Krugman’s reference to Sarah Palin’s “infamous” crosshairs list. Here’s the image that so exercised him:

Every crosshairs represents a Democrat from a conservative district who voted for ObamaCare. The map exercised not only Hack Columnist Krugman but many other Palin haters on the Left. In an earlier column, H-C Krugman wrote that:
All of this goes far beyond politics as usual. Democrats had a lot of harsh things to say about former President George W. Bush — but you’ll search in vain for anything comparably menacing, anything that even hinted at an appeal to violence, from members of Congress, let alone senior party officials.
Will you, Paul? Will you “search in vain for anything comparably menacing, anything that even hinted at an appeal to violence” from members of Congress?
It all depends on whether you bother to look. An enterprising blogger at Verum Serum didn’t have far to look for this:

Got it? “Targeting strategy” for Democrats who hope to go behind “enemy lines” and score a bullseye by nailing the target. That comes from the the Democratic Leadership Committee website in 2004. (And let’s not forget the president of the United States, who recently urged Latinos to “punish our enemies” and said at a rally in Philadelphia “if they bring a knife to the fight we bring a gun.”)
As I say, Hack Columnist Krugman wasn’t the only one exercised by Sarah Palin’s map. Verum Serum also quotes Rep. Chris Van Hollen, leader of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, denouncing it to Chris “the thrill is gone” Matthews: “I really think that that is crossing a line…In this particular environment I think it’s really dangerous to try and make your point in that particular way because there are people who are taking that kind of thing seriously.”
What about this map, Chris?

You remember that map, right? It comes from — what do you know! — the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee website. And there’s more. Each of those tokens leads you to a “targeted Republican,” Thaddeus McCotter, for example.

But back to H-C Krugman:
You know that Republicans will yell about the evils of partisanship whenever anyone tries to make a connection between the rhetoric of Beck, Limbaugh, etc. and the violence I fear we’re going to see in the months and years ahead. But violent acts are what happen when you create a climate of hate. And it’s long past time for the GOP’s leaders to take a stand against the hate-mongers.
Hate-mongers, eh? Beck, Limbaugh, “etc.”? What “hate” are they mongering? John at Powerline gets it in one:
This would be outrageous even if Krugman himself were not one of the worst hatemongers in public life, a man whose hysterical rhetoric exceeds anything you hear from Limbaugh, Beck, or any significant figure on the right who comes to mind. But this sort of contemptible demagoguery is exactly the kind of thing we have come to expect from Krugman.
Indeed we have.

What’s fascinating in all this is that the suspect, Loughner, is one of the most obvious cases of paranoid schizophrenia I have ever seen (also the precise age when extreme symptoms begin to appear). Krugman attempted to score political points with the behavior of an absolute loon. This makes Krugman seem like a dope. Of course, he’s not. But he’s apparently so full of hate that his brain shuts down on the slightest stimulus.
Hey, at least he didn’t try to blame it on “The Rich”, although I’m sure he’ll find a corollary once the blood returns to his brain. If we had only borrowed more money from China perhaps this tragedy could have been averted.
Loughner certainly has paranoid delusions. I read that he was kicked out of a school because of concerns about him being a danger to himself or others. Did his parents or teachers make every effort to get him treated? Was he involuntarily hospitalized?
Oh Christ….what are you now going to proffer? That he was “abused”…ATDT….fed Oreo cookies since infancy? Fruit Loops? Not enough Cranberry Juice or watched too much TV while munching on donut?
Krugman…is a despicable JO / POS that needs to stop masturbating over his so called self importance. He’s a flea…a bug…a seriously flawed man that was ATDT…fed Oreo cookies since infancy, Fruit Loops and is arse was cemented before a B&W TV forced to watch Amos & Andy to get his information on America.
A dweeb…a twerp and I’ll bet…was seriously mocked as a F@@g…by his high school peers.
Just the kind of “star” that the NYT is most proud of. Is there anyone out there who knows if Krugman even had a mother?
Hey back off, there are privacy issues here. Oops, my mistake. I was thinking of the West VA Tech mass murderer who was disruptive, troubled, threatening & protected by that privacy thing. We learned a lot since then & put all kinds of safeguards into place….right?
Wee Paul must be friendless.
If he had a friend, certainly that person would have told him by now that he makes a fool of himself every time he publishes a column.
Well…maybe the cat still likes him.
Um. Oh, wait..
Nah, cats are downright finicky.
Do you really think that this poor guy (the shooter) would have targeted the congresswoman, if it weren’t for the never-ending the government as “satan” refrain from people like: Limbaugh, Beck, O”Reilly, and Palin, to name the best known. The difficulty for self-identified republicans now, and I suppose Tea Party members, is that they don’t want to accept the responsibility that goes along with their free speech. There will always be a percentage of us who are lonely, disenfranchised, mentally ill, or another malady. Understanding who we are as human as well as members of political parties, should inform our discourse. Not silly, provocative and often juvenile banter that is the stuff of the aforementioned pundits/show people. We are reaping what has been sewn by the bloviators of today’s TV and internet. It is up to all of us to decide where to go from here… Less hyperbole and more responsibility from all of the above please!
“There will always be a percentage of us who are lonely, disenfranchised, mentally ill, or another malady.”
Speak for yourself Winifred
He also shot a nine year old girl. Please provide an example of, “free speech” by Limbaugh, Beck, or a Tea party official that in anyway encouraged the shooting of children.
I’ve have asked that question on over 20 boards and FB pages today.
Nothing but…..
*crickets*
Limbaugh in particular has made the hatred of liberals a mark of honor. When you demonize a group you make it easier for people outside that group to do things to them they wouldn’t consider doing to someone in their own group. In fact, this is one tactic the military uses to train soldiers to kill.
Liberals have children and by extension their children are included in that group Limbaugh exhorts his listeners to hate and consider unpatriotic.
The problem with your comment, Winifred Gray, is that in order for it to have any validity, you have to provide some evidence for your unexamined assumptions.
That is, you first have to show us that this young man actually listened to Limbaugh, Beck, O’Reilly and Palin. Can you do this?
Then, you’d have to provide some evidence that listening to Beck, O’Reilly, Palin, etc – who all insist on non-violence and the democratic process – are, according to you, the causal grounds for a violent act?!
Can you explain to us what ought to be the results of someone listening to Obama telling hispanics that they ought to fight their ‘enemies’ (Americans who are against illegal immigration); that GOP who don’t agree should ‘sit in the back (of the bus, a racist metaphor); or what ought to be the result of someone listening to Pelosi stating that it’s ‘unAmerican’ to dissent from the Democratic health care and stimulus bills?
What is unexamined in your comment is that you are stating that people who reject and criticize a governmental policy or program, are unacceptable. You declare, without evidence, that all violence can be linked to such criticism and dissent. You thereby reject the democratic process and insist instead on a passive citizen who accepts without question, whatever the Rulers do. That’s called ‘totalitarianism’. Not democracy.
Very well said ETAB,
Allow me to add that those who excess with hyperbole and irresponsible bloviation quickly marginalize themselves in the debate here. Then the only place left for them is the HuffPo. Thank goodness for free speech.
You forgot Obama’s “they bring a knife, YOU bring a gun.” SANE people recognized it as an “almost” quote from “The Untouchables” & it didn’t result in a spike in the purchase of knives OR guns….of course, if Beck said it, the left would’ve passed a “knife permit” law by now.
It’s funny that so many on the right insist there is no evidence that the shooter listened to right-wing rhetoric on the radio or television. How could he not? It’s forced on me all the time.
Just the other day I was in the car and wanted to listen to the radio. If I didn’t want static my choices were the Rush Limbaugh station, sports or various religious shows. I settled for silence. I had an appt at UC Med Center in Sacramento. In the waiting room Fox News was on the television. I asked to have it turned off or the channel changed. I already didn’t feel well!
To avoid the eliminationist rhetoric from the right, the shooter would have needed to make a constant effort.
What evidence do you have that he even listened to any of the above? Then again you obviously didn’t read the article or you would see that your meme holds no more water than a sieve.
I have been to both anti-Bush rallies(when I was a lib)and tea party rallies-there is absolutely no comparison between the two when it comes to vitriolic rhetoric.
‘Repeal healthcare” ‘taxed enough already’ and ‘down with socialism’ were basically the language coming out of the speakers and the conservative crowds-I stood next to moms, dads, kids, grandmas, physicians, coal miners, middle class, upper class and families.
The anti-Bush anti-war crowds back in 2004, 2006-two rallies in DC I attended were ‘F-Bush’-'Bush is a fascist’-'Impeach Bush’-'Overthrow the government’ and there were always reps from CPUSA, anarchists and the New Black Panther Party. So I don’t know who’s kidding whom here-except that the mainstream media has obviously been taken over by the Left and they will use anything to destroy hard working taxpayers who love this country.
“The anti-Bush anti-war crowds back in 2004, 2006-two rallies in DC I attended were ‘F-Bush’-’Bush is a fascist’-’Impeach Bush’-’Overthrow the government’…”
That’s nothing.
There was much more…talk about inciting violence and murder.
This guy has quite a collection:
http://nagarjunaa.blogspot.com/2010/04/death-threats-against-bush-at-protests.html
Project your delusions on somebody else.
The shooter is insane, and although it’s impossible to get inside the brain of an insane person, at least it’s possible to understand that his behavious is going to be irrational.
But presumably YOU aren’t insane, yet you spout the words of a maniac by drawing conclusions that no rational person would make. So MY conclusion is that you, and every other leftist who is spouting this rubbish, are EVIL. Because EVIL people seek to hurt others, and that is exactly what you are doing….and not casually either, but very deliberately.
Turns out that not only was the nutjob a left-wing Nazi sympathizer, but this Jewish Blue Dog Democrat was one of 19 Democrats who just voted against Nancy Pelosi for Speaker this past week.
Yeah. Obviously Sarah Palin’s fault.
Please take your meds before posting Winnifred. The shooter is a deranged leftist who heard voices. For all we know one of the voices he heard was Obama telling him to take a gun to a knife fight.
I gather you would rather conservatives just surrender and not fight the left (politically). That sounds like a good move (to benefit the left). If we’d just shut up and take it then there would be no violence (I gather caused exclusively by the right in your feeble mind).
Obama was the one that told the Hispanic voters recently to “punish their enemies” and also told his supporters to “bring a gun to a knife fight”. It was liberals who authored a movie and novel during the Bush presidency imagining the assassination of the president (liberals just pooh poohed our concerns about the retoric and vitriol at the time).
Yeah, it would be really good for America if the conservatives would just shut up and know their place.
How many times do I have to remind you? Dissent is the highest form of patriotism as long as you’re a left winger. Otherwise, dummy up & go away….you hate-filled, racist, bigoted, violence-inciting conservative, you!
“…Do you really think that this poor guy (the shooter) would have targeted the congresswoman…”
Ya know what “friend”…it’s always dumb asses like you who go first for the killer, assassin, murderer and his…errrrr…problems.
You know why you’re a retard? Because you never mention…never…the POOR Victims of this squirt that fancied himself……a Major Hussein. A jihadist ( without being Muslim ) a maniac like the one Chapman who shot Reagan…or the Doofus who killed Lennon.
With you screw ups…with you mentally defective libbie loony fruit loops…it’s always about the criminal. You must have a friend in jail. It’s always about “Feelings”…it’s always about anarchy, confusion, chaos and “JUSTICE.”
“The difficulty for self-identified republicans now, and I suppose Tea Party members, is that they don’t want to accept the responsibility that goes along with their free speech.”
The difficulty for you Winifred, and others that would attempt to assign blame as you have, is in demonstrating that there is any blame to assign. You haven’t made the slightest attempt in your post. Please, connect the dots. I’m sure you can. You seem so certain.
Do you really think that this poor guy (the shooter) would have targeted the congresswoman, if it weren’t for the never-ending the government as “satan” refrain from people like: Limbaugh, Beck, O”Reilly, and Palin, to name the best known.
From his reading list on his website, those are people he never listened to.
Try pulling your head from your anal cavity before spewing your own hate.
Yeah, we should all forget the “Bush lied” and “Bush is Hitler”, and Bush is taking over the country and ending the Constitution and the plays and novels written depicting the assassination of Bush while he still was president (by you lefties). Or commedians commenting on how much fun it would be if Rush would die a horrible death via something like pancreatic cancer (Wanda Skyes) or Chris Matthews on TV imagining someone ramming a CO2 cartridge in Rush’s head. There was a story in one of the LA newspapers just today about how some nut jobs in West Hollywood handged Sarah Palin in effigy at their house back in 2008 (lefties are so cool and smart). Didn’t Malcome X, the Weather Underground, and Symbionese Army, and many more of the violent American radicals of the past come from the left? Isn’t Bill Ayers (forme Weather Underground member who claims he’s “Guilty as Hell, free as a bird” for violence (and, arguably, murder) one of Obama’s closests associates from Chicago (who’s visited the White House numerous times. Yeah, I can see where one like yourself feels the poltical retoric from the right is extreme.
if it weren’t for the never-ending the government as “satan” refrain from people like: Limbaugh, Beck, O”Reilly, and Palin
Also, when have any of these people ever defined the government as “satan”? Wrong, yes; are certain members of the current administration evil? Probably. However every conservative talk show I’ve listen to insists on civil discourse and the use of the ballot box (unlike many of the “liberal” pundits).
What are you, a zombie? Who gives you your orders (and talking points), Boris Karloff?
So how does
if it weren’t for the never-ending the government as “satan” refrain from people like: Limbaugh, Beck, O”Reilly, and Palin, to name the best known.
jibe with this about Daily Kos for starters?
The Poisonous Paul Krugman and Kos: Willing to Use Evil and Madness to Advance Their Political Agenda [Updated]
Scroll down to “snapshots” of Daily Kos:
My congressWOMAN voted against Nancy Pelosi! And is now DEAD to me.
…
Daily Kos puts “bulls eye” on Gabrielle Giffords back in June of 2008
Yep, way back on June 26, 2008 (before Palin was a glimmer in McCain’s eye) daily kos “narrowed the TARGET list” of “who to primary” with Giffords among Dems “who sold out the Constitution last week.” They also “bolded” the names of Blue Dogs “for added emphasis.” All that aside…daily kos knows there’s a Constitution? Now that’s news!
Oh, come now, Winifred (if that’s your real name). just one question: who was it who first painted a bulls-eye on Giffords back in oh, say, June of 2008?
I’ll take my answer when you’re done with your Five Minute Hate.
Ooops. One small problem – there’s not the slightest shred of evidence that he ever listened to any conservative (or psuedo-conservative) media personality.
Given that his favorite books were Mein Kampf and Das Kapital, it’s very unlikely that he was a fan of CONSERVATIVE talk shows.
But then, facts have never bothered liberals, have they?
Your diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia is almost certainly correct, based upon the circular logic, the delusions about mind control and post-modernist synthesis of one’s own reality. And paranoids have associated the government with sinister forces, long before the time of Limbaugh and Beck.
What is striking is the strange efforts at logical structure that Loughner employed to substantiate his delusions. Almost as if he had studied at the feet of an eminent practitioner of this sort of bizarre pseudo-syllogistic reasoning…. like Paul Krugman!
Could it be that Paul Krugman’s brain was really the ultimate cause of this senseless tragedy?!
“the delusions about mind control and post-modernist synthesis of one’s own reality.”
Hmmmm. That’s a fairly accurate description of most of the hard left in this country, and a fair chunk of the mushy middle, too.
That shouldn’t’ surprise us – it’s taught in most universities these days.
The left is out to demonize good Americans – again….. How do they do it…. watch this , start with part 2…. get answers here- http://www.marcrubin.com/dada2.ivnu
I suppose I could look it up, but I’m too uninterested to do it. Krugman is often described as an economist, but from my reading of economics I get the distinct idea that Krugman doesn’t know the first thing about ecomonics.
Actually you mayhave just unintentionally diagnosed Krugman. Your closer ‘But he’s apparently so full of hate that his brain shuts down on the slightest stimulus.” Is a description of how Schizophrenics overreact to percieved threats.
The most depressing contrast is that between the response by fulminating progressives to this event and to the mass murder done by Major Hassan at Fort Hood. In the latter case the evidence was in — solidly — within a day: it was another Islamic-fundamentalist extravaganza, this time from within the heart of the military. Nary a word, even until now, from the Krugmans about that. Instead, throat-clearing about stress (probably our fault) and a deranged shooter. This time, a perfectly obvious psychotic, with no visible, systematic political connections is the shooter. The Chomsky derivatives are instantly in the know: it was right-wing, tea-party hate…man!
“This makes Krugman seem like a dope. Of course, he’s not.”
Good Lord, Roger – whatever makes you think he’s not?
Kruggie’s been proving for years that he’s a partisan-blinded idiot. Close enough to “dope” for gummint work.
I agree. I don’t think that partial credit should be given to wrong answers just because they’re by choice.
I think that at last it is starting to sink in that the media types can be malicious.
I have been trying to make this point with regard to Middle East reporting and have been reprimanded in certain instances that editors, journalists and reporters can only be ignorant or naive; and now we have emotions issuing forth in defense of those hard held beliefs that expose the lie of those poor mislead “holders of the truth” molding public opinion.
The blogosphere can catch a specimen of depravity like amber catches a beetle. On the whole, that is a good thing for science.
In response to Krugman’s vile piece, there are only two reasonable courses of action to take.
First, the New York Times should immediately fire Krugman…not allow him to resign, but discharge him, and the editor who agreed to publish his piece, for cause.
Second, Krugman should demonstrate that he has a shred of decency left in him and seek redemption for his transgression by willing his estate to Loughner’s victims and then quietly hanging himself.
Hello! McFly!
What Krugman has done is no different than asserting a blood libel against innocent people.
Doing this kind of thing should have very drastic and immediate personal consequences.
A person with a shred of decency should be so filled with shame at having made such baseless public charges that he would welcome the oblivion of self-negation in atonement for it.
But I doubt Krugman is of sufficient quality of character to entertain such introspection.
Protect and defend him if you wish, bucko, but one of these days he’s just as likely to accuse you and yours of poisoning wells and using the corpses of murdered infants for religious ceremonies.
Doubtless such a charge will have instant validity for some, it likely being published in the New York Times and syndicated to all the “correct” media outlets.
And then the mob will howl for YOUR head.
You miss the point here my friend, if Krugman HAD a shred of decency he would never have written that piece. Krugman is an utterly worthless excuse for a human being — as this piece of his proves.
What’s sad is the progressives really cannot are so filled with hate they cannot see that they don’t even make sense. They are, unfortunately as sick and delusional as this poor fool. I say poor fool, because I truly pity the man. He is probably, as Roger says, a paranoid schizophrenic. Not evil, per se, just much like a razor blade in an apple, to dangerous to be allowed to exist.
Patrick
“You miss the point here my friend, if Krugman HAD a shred of decency he would never have written that piece.”
Point taken.
“This makes Krugman seem like a dope. Of course, he’s not.”
Of course he is.
He is either so full or reflexive hate that he immediately pens words with no relation to reality or he is part of that Journolist crowd that yells “racist” just to divert the debate. In this case he is waving the bloody shirt instead of yelling “racist’.
To counter either behavior articles like Roger’s here and Powerline’s are clear that it is Krugman that should be held to account, not us.
“He is either so full or reflexive hate that he immediately pens words with no relation to reality…..”
It’s a rare day, indeed, when a Krugman “pens words” that have ANYTHING to do with reality.
And let’s not forget that mere days after 9/11 Paul Krugman asserted that at least we’d get some “stimulative” infrastructure spending out of rebuilding the twin towers.
One could forgive him for not understanding the nuances between “tragedy” and “atrocity,” but to glibly mention Keynesian infrastructure spending as an upside of a massacre is more than a bit insensitive to the victims.
Yeah, when is Krugman going to point out the stimulative effect on the ambulance drivers who got extra work yesterday?
Ugh. This is why I stopped reading Krugman years ago.
Right now Krugman’s arguing w/Obama over whether that “extra work” qualifies as jobs “created” OR jobs “saved”.
Don’t even bat an eyelash. This is standard operating procedure. The masses who are at the heart of the revolution in America have been conditioned to respond to the mass-media party line.
Krugman is just a hired gun.
It is so very sad what has happened to those that were murdered, their families ill have that lost so much, and the injuries that will endure forever at the hands of
a madman. Eventually the truth will come out and it will not be a Palin or
a Beck or whoever in the present you want to blame. It will be hate books
like the Communist Manifesto, Mein Kampf and the professors that direct
students that there is value in these terrible tributes to dictators. It
is even sadder that we have men in positions where they can be heard, like a
Mr. Krugman.
There may have been an element of anti-Semitism to the shooter’s motive. He cites Mein Kampf as on of his favorite books and also apparently belonged to a neo-Nazi group. Here is info about the Congresswoman from a non-political Jewish website, :
“If you want something done, your best bet is to ask a Jewish woman to do it. Jewish women have an ability to cut through all the reasons why something should, shouldn’t or can’t be done and pull people together to be successful.”
So said an Arizona state senator, Gabrielle Giffords, when she was running for Congress in 2006. Ms. Giffords narrowly won, and became the first Jewishly identified representative from her state.
Rep. Giffords did not always consider herself Jewish. With a Christian mother and a Jewish father, Rep. Giffords began to identify herself as Jewish after a political visit to Israel ten years ago. It wasn’t always a popular move, particularly in the conservative southern Arizona district she represents. But her decision to be public about her Jewish identity speaks to Rep. Giffords’ commitment to Jewish causes.
(Rep. Giffords often speaks of her grandfather, Akiva Hornstein, the son of a Lithuanian rabbi, who moved from New York to Arizona and founded the successful tire business that Rep. Giffords later ran before her entry into politics. Mr. Hornstein changed his name to Giffords because of the persistent anti-Semitism he encountered in southern Arizona.)
In fact, one of Ms. Gifford’s first – and most significant – political acts after her life-changing trip to Israel was to sponsor a bill in the Arizona Senate eliminating the statute of limitations for collecting insurance claims by victims of the Holocaust and their heirs.”
While Loughner may have thought highly of Mein Kampf, other reports say that two of his other favourite books were The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged. Although Marx disdained religion, he had a Jewish heritage and one of his grandfather’s was a rabbi; Marx’s father was born Jewish but converted to Christianity. Ayn Rand also had a Jewish heritage although I’m not aware of how observant she was at any point in her life.
Painting Loughner as a neo-Nazi right wing extremist on the strength of his love of Mein Kampf – as the MSM is doing – studiously ignores his admiration for the key works in the Communist and Libertarian ideologies.
Marx despised Jews: He often used anti-Jewish slurs. His bourgeoisie are thinly-veiled Jewish stereotypes.
And please note that Hitler and Mussolini were not right-wing. Fascism and its cousin Nazism were (are) far-left movements.
“And please note that Hitler and Mussolini were not right-wing. Fascism and its cousin Nazism were (are) far-left movements.”
Please retire this canard. Nazis and fascists self-identified as being right-wing (and proudly so), and their detractors identified them as right-wing. More philosophically, fascism was a right wing response, or counter suggestion, to the viewpoints of socialism and late 19th century liberalism on how to organise society after the fall of the old order in the 19th century. Furthermore, much of the views of fascism is easily identified as an extreme of traditional right-wing positions – i.e. social conservatism (focus on family, church and nationalism), pro-military, anti-communism, anti-union, anti-immigration etc.
I think some people perhaps feel that if fascism is identified as a right wing ideology that it would mean that all right-wing ideas are wrong but that is just silly. So I don’t really see a need to pretend otherwise.
So go and read Toland’s 1976 biography of Hitler, p. 306, and especially his May 1st, 1927 Mayday speech
and to add to your education try reading this
by Joseph Goebbels
Why Are We Nationalists?
Why Are We Socialists?
Why a Workers’ Party?
and the rest
It is about sovereignity of the individual, free markets and accepting limitations on the power of government. Both the Left and the Right wing violate these principles with their own brand of Statism. But you have to admit, the Left seems far more deeply and gleefully in to it and their ideas bring economic inequity and misery very similar to the fascists regimes that you mention.
cassius- Be careful not to fall in to the trap of comparing Europe’s definition of rightwing with the US model. Very, very different. Always has been, and no-doubt always will be. The NAZI’s were absolutely NOT interested in small gov’t.
First of all, his reading list contained “We the Living”, not “Atlas Shrugged”, you faker.
Does anyone else see something bizarre in quoting two totally opposite works (Marx vs. Rand)?
Not to mention the fact that the Nazi’s were left wing (“National Socialist Party”)!
What part of National Socialist (Nazi) is the “right” wing part?
She really said that? That would be just as bad as the “a wise Latina” for being bigoted and racist.
Sigh, this reminds me of another problem. I had a job in which I had to deal with the “homeless” of whom a large part were metnally ill and self-medicating with alcohol and street drugs. I used the term paranoid schizophrenia for the condition of one and was corrected. The proper term for use was “bi-polar”. Apparently the term paranoid schizophrenia had too many negative connotations for the PC legal world in which we navigate these days. Of course I thought the discription of behaviour that involved getting into a one sided discussion and argument and then an attack on a mail box was something beyond “bi-polar.”
What I call the insane rights movement and the budget cutting by politicians for mental institutions has done neither the public or the mentally ill, a service.
I entirely agree with you. The closing of mental institutions, with jail supposed to be the cheaper alternative, has been a disaster. The so-called “homeless” are mainly mentally ill and should be in mental institutions. Loughner is yet another mentally ill person who should have been in a mental institution.
Let me correct one statement and endorse another. Insane people suffer from psychosis, mental disorder. There are several but the two worst are schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Bipolar (or unipolar)is the new term (of this generation) for manic depression, coined by doctors to avoid the sigma of madman. Laymen who lack the credentials to diagnosis nutty behavior, but still must forbid a screwball from entering a spent fuel pool of a nuke, are advised by the liability lawyers to use the term aberrant. Example: Mr. Loughner, or Mr Klugman, by their statements, exhibit aberrant behavior.
If you live past 30, and own a computer, you realize the monkey-typewriter problem. Today every nut publishes on the web, and no one will live long enough to read all their garbage. Thus you must select. Decades ago, I came to an intellectual position that reading the NYT, and most of the MSM, is a waste of time. I accept that I might occasionally be wrong, but the loss is not great. The last 36 hours reaffirms my judgment. Diogenes could carry his lantern through most of US journalism and never light up the truth.
I do not know if Nobel prizes are sold on Ebay, or on those TV channels that I also do not watch, but I am certain they are not what they once were.
“I” am the TEA party and I do not approve of shooting politicians. I prefer voting them out.
AGREE!!!
What is most depressing is the passle of “Reasonable Conservatives” who cannot see past their disdain for Sarah Palin who are Cooperating with the Leftist Mantra by pointing out the Oh So Reasonable line that “Sarah showed poor judgement when she used targets on her map.”
Cooperating with stupidity and vapidity enables them!
Someone, Somewhere, I forget who, said “you cannot compromise with the devil.” Doing so just enables evil. Vote them out or at least vote against them. Compromise against the principles of liberty and freedom reduce us all.
Exactly right. I’ve got a new post tracking violent Leftist rhetoric back through some earlier controversies on my blog, http://www.granitesentry.com. Love to hear everybody’s view.
If there is something to be done, it would be to advance legislation that would provide for a path to committal, and facilities to treat or house the insane. We have had the Ostrich view of this problem for decades now. Probably whatever the cost is would cheaper than the actual costs experienced now, as a result of our blindness.
Never fails that the “Left” is the “do as I say, not as I do” group.
Yes, their favorite river is “De-Nile” and revisionism is their strong suit.
Conservatives have compassion for others different from themselves. Liberals/Progressives only have hate for those different from themselves.
And that’s the fundamental problem…Conservatives act as if their opponents had honor.
There has been more heat than light emitted from the punditocracy in its rush to explain Jared Lee Loughner’s shooting rampage. Some like Krugman blame political discourse, pidgeon holing Loughner with all right-wing extremists, another Timothy McVeigh. Others like Brit Hume reduce his actions to psychosis and nothing more.
It was the toxic mix of psychotic illness and the politics of hate which best explains the event.
There is strong evidence Loughner is a paranoid schizophrenic. He is at the age for this illness; he was rejected by the Army for mental health reasons; his college would not let him continue without mental health evaluation; and most revealingly, his videos posted on his YouTube channel, ClassItUp10, display clear evidence of psychotic thinking and paranoid ideation.
He was a devotee of the white premacist/anti-Semitic hate group, American Renaissance. He tried to murder, Gabrielle Giffords, a Jewish Congresswoman who invoked her Jewish values during her re-election campaign to explain her oppposition to Arizona’s notorious SB 1070 anti-immigrant law. He murdered Gabriel Zimmerman, Giffords’s Jewish staffer who organized her Congress on Your Corner event at the Safeway grocery store.
Some pundits suggest all who support Second Amendment rights and Arizona’s SB 1070 law are potential assassins. Others imply every paranoid schizophrenic is a potential assassin. Both positions are ludicrous.
Inspired by Sophocles’ “Oedipus the King,” Aristrole wrote the Poetics in which he outlines his theory of tragedy. One element is the inexorable outcome, the inevitable fall of the protagonist.
As Loughner’s videos make clear, he was preoccupied with “mind control,” religion and government. American Renaissance posits Jews have exaggerated power and corrupt America and the white race. Loughner likely targeted Giffords and her supporters as symbols of those responsible for the intolerable chaos inside his own head.
As Roger Kimball correctly notes, that makes the event neither predictable nor avoidable, and as such, there are not any larger lessons to be learned from it.
Well said!
come on Roger.
you know the truth is not relevant to marxists/leftist/socialists.
they are all delusional as far as I can tell. they live completely divorced from reality. it may well be a genetic disorder or disease since the results seem the same.
they want control and how they achieve it doesn’t seem to matter to them.
“…you know the truth is not relevant to marxists/leftist/socialists.”
Is anyone listening to the increased “chatter” from the communists? Francis Fox Piven and all the progressive underlings are calling for violence at every turn. Evil!
If Sarah Palin’s target map was the catalyst for this tragedy wouldn’t the shooter have used a rifle? I mean her crosshairs are not found on a Glock 19.
I heard that Sarah Palin and most Tea Party members shop at Target. Should I be concerned about their bullseye logo opening the doors to more violence? Maybe Congress can stop this madness.
Lastly, I don’t know why I havn’t heard anyone say it was the gun’s fault! As you know guns kill people!
Of course one could respond; if guns kill people then your spoon makes you fat. Just thinking!
“If Sarah Palin’s target map was the catalyst for this tragedy wouldn’t the shooter have used a rifle? I mean her crosshairs are not found on a Glock 19.”
“Hey, if I wanted to roast Jews, wouldn’t I take them to ovens and not showers? Duh!” – Adolph Hitler
Your post is a clarion example of the queasy desperation being felt throughout the Tea Bag community today. Get used to it. It’s called accountability.
It’s been quite awhile since an event has made you this happy sensei.
You are getting a great start to the new year.
Nope, the whole thing sickens me. Literally. That said, I’m not surprised. I don’t have to point to Palin’s crosshairs or Beck torched or Angle’s “2nd amendment remedies,” though that’s easy enough. You need only reflect on posts past to see the seething . . . everything from “Our troops won’t fire on our own people when we take arms into the streets” to “If I had my way the entire Middle East would be a sheet of radioactive glass (except Israel)”
We got guns and we’re not afraid to use them! Blood of tyrants/tree of freedom! Don’t retreat. Reload!
This relentless chorus of candy-ass bravado lights up the souls of the sick and predisposed. For God’s sake you want to ban hip hop lyrics because of their sway over the malleable mind. You’re more worried about some urban clown saying “bitch” than some rodeo clown saying “Your president wants to destroy America and your kids future . . . this is where the killing starts!”
And when one of these psychos goes off, we get what we got yesterday.
Here, I have the answer . . . with more relevance and more than deserved volume . . . STFU!
Oh I didn’t mean to piss you off sensei, just to recognize the obvious joy you feel about these events.
People like you are never happier than when they have tools to attack the people who belittle you with their success. This is the perfect opportunity to criticize, demonize, lie and divide. What comradrerie you must be feeling with your fellow degenerates as you all positively bubble with glee about this tragedy.
Saturday was clearly one of the happiest days of your life.
Your sensei – could you explain to me why the Tea Party, which emerged after Obama’s infamous ‘Stimulus and Health Care Acts ‘ – both acts pushed through Congress with Obama insisting on no reading or debate (an open denigration of The People and of Democracy)….and which calls for:
fiscal responsibility in government, limited rather than socialist governance, lowering of taxes, reduction of debt and deficit, focus on constitutional limits of government…could you explain to me why you talk about ‘the queasy desperation of the Tea Party today’????
The Tea Party’s calling for accountability of the government to these basic principles is hardly reprehensible but is instead, a principled and democratic position. What’s wrong with it? Hmmm?
NonSense, Hitler did put the Jews in ovens.
Oh, and the only accounting will be more of what you just got at the ballot box.
He did? Wow! That’s crazy.
The only “queasy desperation” I see is in your post – oh, make that your many posts. Apparently, you have grown used to it.
Your Sensei – How enlightening! Your name reveals your arrogance. What a waste of O2. Go back and hide in your univeristy, in the shadows of your political theories and communist delusions.
The only clarion call I hear is the one rising up from the streets, neighborhoods and communities of sensible Americans. Go ahead, keep poking us in the chest with your progressive scams, shams and flim flams.
You’ve built your house on shifting sands… when the winds blow and the rains come you will be washed away in the deluge of what is right and true. Hang on to your arse!
“The only clarion call I hear is the one rising up from the streets, neighborhoods and communities of sensible Americans.”
2nd Amendment remedies! Don’t retreat. Reload! This is where the killings start!
The only person accountable here is the person who pulled the trigger. Everyone is responsible for their own actions.
“Everyone is responsible for their own actions.”
You’re talking to liberal sensei….libs aren’t responsible for anything, ESPECIALLY their own actions.
What a bag of hot air you are.
What happened in November to lefties nuts is just a beginning. Get used to it. It called accountability.
BTW, that is what the Tee Party is about. And what scares the heck out of you, is the fact that PEOPLE understand that.
Stop being an opportunist and look at the facts. This guy was mentally unstable/insane. If he had any discernable politics it was to the left. There is no evidence/mention that he has ever listened to Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, Palin.
Well enjoy your opportunism but it is misplaced and makes too close a comparison between you and Kruegman and none with Loughner and conservatives.
An impartial comment from the GREAT WHITE NORTH……
Damian Penny, a lawyer here in the Halifax area just had the quote of the day on this,
“When the last Che Guevara T-shirt has been thrown out, *then* the left can start lecturing us about violent political imagery.”
And let’s not forget the movie from a few years ago that imagined George W. Bush’s assassination – apparently quite enthusiastically – and was *not* thought excessive by most progressives. Or Ted Ralls’ demands for an armed uprising against the current US government. No violent rhetoric there!
Y’know, every so often I am reminded of why I consider the USA blessed to have Canadians as neighbors.
With that quoted line, this is one of those times…
Amen!
Since the lefties are psychos, they think that every psycho must have something to do with politics.
It is simply not so.
Prayers for the Congresswoman and her family, and for all the victims of this tragedy.
God is Infinite Love.
Never let a crisis go to waste…
If the shooter was a big Obama supporter, openly gay, or Muslim, he would be a ‘lone nut’ like the fort Hood shooter (the fact that he shouted Allhu akbar and considered himself a soldier of Allah, means nothing because everyone knows that Islam is a religion of peace.)
However, since the shooter is a white male, he is obviously a republican gun nut Palin lover, teabagger, constitutional fetishist, who probably is related to Karl Rove, and shoots puppies for fun (wait, that would be Mike Vick, Obama’s new BFF so nevermind)
The left is sooo predictable…
“Never let a crisis go to waste…”
good catch.
The left is attempting to turn this tragedy into Obama’s Oklahoma City.
They are thrilled to get the opportunity.
I do not cooperate well with stupidity or political correctness.
Democrats and Krugman seem to attract the weird and wackos.
The biggest “national” travesty will be the loss of freedom, the overreaction, the cost associated with additional security, the lack of availability to our representatives due to stringent measures with everyone affiliated with politic will be placed in a bubble.
It will be the same reaction we had to a underwear bomber. Women and children being groped to board a plane which does nothing to make us safer, the call for more gun control which will further endanger innocent people, which will further incite hatred of government authority, which invariably leads to more hostility.
It’s the overreaction to every tragedy, every near miss that will be our undoing.
Essentially I agree with you, but I do not forget that it was the Foxies pounding the security drum non-stop after the shoe bomber, about how it showed that Obama was soft on terrorists blah, blah. A year later, they were pounding the tyranny of body scans or pat-downs. Yes, I know news cycles ebb and flow, but with their 24/7 pounding of the drum, they exacerbate it…and make a lot of money. Just saying.
“…but I do not forget that it was the Foxies pounding the security drum…”
So Big Sis is a creation of Fox News?
I have a little trouble with that hypothesis. Fox News plays a paradiddle and the Dem Government jumps? A very dubious proposition, even for you. But I am glad you go for fair and balanced. That’s probably why you spend so much time at PJM. Good for you. You may get your mind right after a while.
Given all the credentials for certified wackiness–see above posts–why did this guy get to buy a gun? Just asking.
I was wondering the same thing. In my state, buying a gun is a highly documented transaction (except for illegal sales, which this doesn’t appear to have been). Is Arizona really lax in its gun sales?
Mocha, they can catch you lying about having a felony record; it’s way harder to catch someone lying about mental illness. Doctor Patient privilege, remember? Unless there’s been an actual court process (commitment, finding of incompetency), the legal system won’t have much of a record. Even a prescription for anti-depressants wouldn’t be conclusive; those get prescribed to stop smoking or lose weight.
Bottom line: in a free country, every dog gets one bite. They shouldn’t get a second one, though. Execute this guy.
Now THAT is a good question.
Who deemed him fit to carry a gun?
One of the worst hate groups on the Left is the Southern Poverty Law Center. They perpetuate their hatred of the Right by constantly accusing it of being hateful.
A number of people, a number of times have pointed out that the work for which Krugman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics was stollen (without acknowledgement) from others in the field of Economic Geography. Plainly put, the individual is a fraud.
This pernicious little pipsqueak is a disgrace, even to a rag like the New York Times. He even looks like a rat (with apologies to rats.)
Socialist reasoned commentary: Obama: “Stupid cops.” Krugman: Stupid Tea-Partier.”
21.Chris – Absolutely. President Obama’s immediate reaction is to make an appropriate public statement and send FBI Director Mueller to take charge, which accomplishes the following:
1. He reacted quickly and decisively, and will be praised from all sides.
2. He attempts to take control of both the situation and the narrative by managing the flow of information.
Which begs a question for both left and right – Is it wise to have the POTUS immediately “take control” of every politically charged event that occurs in this country?
What the Sarah lovers don’t seem to get is that this lunatic fringe, 1/2 governor from AK, who doesn’t have the brains that God gave a goose, tweeted way back in March of last year “Don’t Retreat, Instead–RELOAD!” What do these people think she meant by that? Do they actually believe she wasn’t referring to reloading a gun? If not that, then what?
Again on 11/4/10 after the midterm elections, stupid Sarah made another gun reference in a boasting tweet “Remember months ago bullseye icon used 2 target the 20 Obamacare-lovin’ incumbent seats? We won 18 out of 20 (90% success rate;T’ain’t bad)” Are we to believe that the crosshairs on the now, infamous, SARAHPAC map were “…simply crosshairs like you’d see on maps” as stated by Rebecca Mansour, a Palin aide, in an effort to defend her on Tammy Bruce’s radio show yesterday? If Palin’s statement wasn’t referring to a gun, than what was it referring to?
It matters not if what she has said and done since she became a prominent national political figure (albeit totally unjustifiably) have anything to do with the shootings yesterday, or if Loughner is a right or left wing wacko. What does matter, however, is that the inflammatory, hateful, incendiary, vitreolic rhetoric that seems to spew out of the mouths of the likes of Palin, Beck, Hannity, O’Reilly, Limbaugh, and “thank-God-she’s-gone-maybe-forever” Sharon Angle, only serves to rile up the hapless souls in America like Loughner who have nothing better to do with their time than think of ways they can leave the planet as “martyrs.”
This venomous language must end for the sake of all Americans. Six innocent people lost their lives yesterday, a 7th is hanging on for dear life, and 13 others sustained gunshot wounds because a young man was totally, or partially, motivated to action by words of hate that proliferate the airwaves on an, almost, daily basis. When will this insanity stop?
It’s time for those who ascribe to this mantra to grow up and take responsibility for their actions. Words have consequences!
Yeah Brad, you must have forgotten about Obama telling Hispanic supporters recently about “punish your enemies” or mentioning that “if they bring a knife to the fight we’ll bring a gun”. It seems that the only insanity you want to stop is for conservatives to fight back in the battleground of ideas (and politics). You lefties tried to pin Oklahoma City on Rush Limbaugh, you tried to imply the Washington, D.C., sniper was a disgruntled white person, yet you lefties pleaded for no rush to judgement when the Ft. Hood shootings occurred once it was known it was a Muslim American. You also fail to note how Daily Kos had a similar map for “targeted” districts which once included sometimes moderate Gabrielle Giffords as a target because, since she represents a moderate district in a very red state, she sometimes has to vote against the coolaid drinking lefties (if she doesn’t want to get thrown out) that recently lost control of the House. Just this week a Tucson blogger on Daily Kos expressed anger at Gabrielle for not voting (along with 19 other Democrats) to re-elect Nancy Pelosi to lead the minority. This Daily Kos blogger from Tucson stated “she is dead to me”. Just this past week! Yet all you mention in your rant is Palin or Rush or Beck . . . like it’s always one sided which you know darned well it isn’t. We see right through you and your leftie pals and won’t let you get away with it anymore. You and your pals on the left are just as much responsible for this as you claim Sarah Palin or anyone on the right is!
Indeed, Brad W, ‘words have consequences’. So, could you explain to us how you validate your words:
“the inflammatory, hateful, incendiary, vitreolic rhetoric that seems to spew out of the mouths of the likes of Palin, Beck, Hannity, O’Reilly, Limbaugh”.
Please provide evidence of their words that are ‘inflammatory, hateful..etc’. I’ve watched and listened to them and don’t find any such rhetoric.
However, there IS a lot in ‘inflammatory, hateful, incendiary, vitriolic rhetoric’ from ‘the left’:
Julianne Malveaux, a radio host and USA Today columnist, referring to Justice Thomas: “I hope his wife feeds him lots of eggs and butter and he dies early like many black men do, of heart disease,”
NPR Nina Totenberg: “I think he ought to be worried about what’s going on in the Good Lord’s mind,” she said of Senator Jesse Helms in 1995, “because if there is retributive justice, he’ll get AIDS from a transfusion, or one of his grandchildren will.”
Janeane Garfolo, referring to the GOP: ” people that are closet racists, misogynists, homophobes, and people who love . . . the politics of exclusion”.
And of course, the constant, endless analogies of Bush with the Third Reich and Hitler.
Chris Matthews and “I have to tell you, Rush Limbaugh is looking more and more like Mr. Big, and at some point somebodys going to jam a CO2 pellet into his head and hes going to explode like a giant blimp.”
So, I suggest you take a look at this site, and rethink your rhetoric. As you say, you must be accountable.
http://ronbosoldier.blogspot.com/2011/01/more-leftist-hate-speech-that-caused.html
You’re obviously a troll, but above all – you’re a moron unworthy of a reasoned response.
I have listened to Palin, Limbaugh, Beck, and the others you mentioned and I haven’t heard “the inflammatory, hateful, incendiary, vitreolic rhetoric that seems to spew out of the mouths”. This leads me to suspect that you may be hearing voices, like the killer in Arizona hears voices. Perhaps you should see a doctor about that.
What about the facts, when did this vitiol start?
Neither the Tea party or the Republican party supporters have reached the level of the Democrats and affiliated groups.
“Kill Bush. Bomb his f__ing house”
“Save Mother Earth. Kill Bush”
“Hang Bush for warcrimes”
“Bush is thge disease Death is the cure”
“I am here to kill Bush”
“Bush the only dope worth shooting”
“Death to worlds #1 terrorist pig Bush & his sheep”
Etc. etc. etc.
What do you think they mean by that?
Did you ask for the venomous language to stop?
Have you read the article?
*Puts his fingers in his ears shouting la-la-la-la-la-la-la*
Brad, That has to be one of the silliest comments I have ever read. You go around looking for secret signals don’t you. You hear things that others don’t. You know secret things that very few can discern. Right Brad?
No, sorry, completely disagree. Words do not have consequences. Only actions have consequences. Words can be used to ascribe motivations and reasons but not consequences.
Lots of people use that analogy, in many contexts, especially politicians. Certainly anyone who routinely hunts or otherwise is familiar with firearm use. The analogy between politics and warfare/hunting is hardly new to Mrs Palin.
And then there was the book about the assassination of the sitting Democrat presi……oh, no, wait. It was a play (and a book?) portraying the potential assassination of George W. Bush.
The problem with these lying deceivers is that, because of the circles they move in, they are still able to find individuals willing to be deceived by them.
They keep on revealing who they are.
BRAD W is a happy man today. He is probably experiencing relief from the erectile dysfunction he has suffered since Nov. 2.
Laughed my a$$ off. Best comment yet!
““Don’t Retreat, Instead–RELOAD!” Do they actually believe she wasn’t referring to reloading a gun? ”
It’s a Marine quote I believe. It has to do with standing your ground rather than retreating. She wasn’t suggesting that anyone should start shooting. I doubt anyone not already primed to soil their drawers trying to spin everything Sarah Palin says negatively didn’t understand what she meant.
Nice list of ‘inflammatory, hateful, incendiary, vitreolic’ folks you have there, BTW. You must go through a lot of tighty whities.
You are one big DH
She means….don’t give up,try again next time.
It is not a marine quote and you know it, LIAR
Nope, Sorry. ‘Don’t retreat, reload’ doesn’t means ‘don’t give up,try again next time.’ It means exactly what I said it meant – stand your ground and fight back. Doesn’t mean come back another time. Wouldn’t even make sense in context or otherwise.
As far as where it came from, I did say I believe, not that I was sure. Had I been sure, I would have referenced it. I recognize the phrase as similar if not very close to something I read years back. Might be thinking of Chesty Puller, but maybe not. When I find it, I’ll let you know and you can argue then about whether I get an F for lying or a C for poor memory
Some other Palin apologist told me that “Don’t retreat, reload” meant reloading the campaign effort. I was going to reply but I had to go reload my coffee cup.
The Commie News Network (CNN) is now reporting that the gunman is a registered Democrat, who had met the Congresswoman in 2007.
Any doubts as to whom he had voted for in 2008 ?
Krugman only survives by virtue of his press pass from the MSM. This evil nonsense he postulates looks even more foolish given the fact the murderer is a far left anarchist/atheist with a step up on the violence endemic in such circles.
BTW, a friend of mine informed me that the gunman may have volunteered for Gifford’s campaign and was dismissed immediately for being weird. She got the info from a friend in AZ who is also familiar with Gifford via the relatively small Jewish community. Put this down as rumor.
Here’s some more from the left:
Rahm Emanuel:
“Emanuel stood up at a celebratory dinner with colleagues from the campaign, grabbed a steak knife and began rattling off a list of betrayers, shouting ‘Dead! … Dead! … Dead!’ and plunging the knife into the table after every name.”
Charlie Brooker (2004):
“.John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, John Hinckley Jr – where are you now that we need you?” (on the reelection of GWBush)
And the “Wanted Dead or Alive’ posters of Bush. And T-Shirts with ‘Kill Bush’ on the front. Posters of: ‘Save Mother Earth: Kill Bush’.
Did the Democrats get in a snit about these statements? Hmmm? And these were REAL. Not imagined. But this situation has no links to any political party or rhetoric…and yet, the left is insistent on declaring that it does. Hmmm. Why? Is there something else going on in Washington that they’d prefer to sideline?
Anyone remember THIS?
Murder, Incorporated?
The Targets Were Capitalism, and Officer Mobilio. The Accused Is Dead Serious About His Quirky Defense.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A24016-2005Apr3.html
Wow. The similarities are striking.
Paul Krugman is way more shifty-eyed than Dick Nixon ever was, no?
One point you seem to have missed in your article, is that the reason there were so many people killed and injured – is that there were so few armed citizens ready and prepared to defend their families, their neighbors, their public servants, and their community from the ravages of the lawless. The father of the nine-year old girl might wonder, “If I had been armed, could I have stopped the shooter in time to save my daughter? Should I have been ready and able?” That kind of question isn’t being asked.
Instead, local politics and anti-gun rhetoric assured that there was one, single shooter active in this Disarmed Victim Zone.
The unchallenged quote that mentions ‘millions of guns’ overlooks a recent FBI crime report, citing that each state that authorized ‘shall issue’ concealed carry laws in the last decade – saw declines in crime rates. Communities that have required every homeowner to own and possess a firearm have seen similar results.
I don’t carry a weapon, and haven’t since my service in the US Navy. I do have firearms to protect my livestock, and have used them, to date against furred predators. But shootings in malls and schools and college campuses – an Army base for goodness’ sake, and other Disarmed Victim Zones (i.e., gun-free zones that keep *only* law-abiding people from bringing a gun) seem to create the circumstances for mass shootings.
The mere likelihood of competing shooters seems to reduce the risk.
Full blown hysteria in the right wing extremist camp.
“He but . . . yeah except . . . what about . . . look! . . . THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS! . . .”
Lovely to see. Why in the world would the world be looking at you people as contributor to this tragedy? Why on Earth would anyone come to that conclusion? Gosh . . . THINK! THINK! . . . Oh, darn . . . I don’t know. I really don’t. Must have something to do with what you’ve been saying and doing for the last few years. And you’ve been doing it with such vigor and theater. And through such powerful partners – Fox and talk radio. One problem: People have been paying attention. And we’ve been expecting something like this. And now it’s here.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure that has something to do with it
Hey, if you bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun.
No-sensy – intellectually dishonest, morally bankrupt and most of all, historically illiterate. Does your mom know you’re postig this nonsense on her computer?
If you are truly as unhinged as your posts seem to indicate, perhaps a vist from Secret Service is in order. Or a Thorazine drip. Or both.
“Why in the world would the world be looking at you people as contributor to this tragedy?”
“The world”? Are you an idiot, or what? Only the left wing wackos are trying to politicize this.
“Why in the world would the world be looking at you people as contributor to this tragedy?”
The world? Paul Krugman has been elevated by His Own Lawyer[aka Your S] to “the world”? Poor His Own thinks the Brave New World = Paul Krugman. Do we need further evidence as to whether this personage is one of astute judgment? I sure don’t. In fact, he is no personage at all, he is a mere person, as in: Oh, THAT person.
No, no, not THAT person . . . it’s THAT ONE. (Thanks, Senator McCain.)
you’re way out there
you probably also believe that “guns cause crime”. There are about 220 million
firearms in private hands in the US and in the last few years – as this number
has grown gun crimes have gone the other way – in absolute numbers
I understand how you think it goes together but Rush and them have been on the
aire for 20 years and before them other people and these events are rare – the
“anti – government” – a leftist term – it is really limited govt thank you very much
sentiment has been going on since the founding of the republic
why do the actions of a kook – and registered democrat – have to get their fuel from what the right says in your world? He was just crazy. Maybe he just heard Randi Rhoads or
Ed Schultz (airhead america and msnbc ) talking about hohw the left had sold out
or maybe he had seen Kos’s target map.
Your are way out there and you sound scared
Kay.
From the information that is coming out, it seems to me to be utterly illogical to consider that Loughner’s actions were politically motivated. Or indeed, motivated by anything in the ‘outer real world’. The cause is within his own mental state.
It appears that he moved into a mental deterioration beginning a few years ago – a common age for paranoid schizophrenia to emerge – and his words and behavior seem to fit that illness.
This means that nothing, no rhetoric from the ‘right or even the left’ is behind his actions. Just the self-generated rhetoric of a psychosis.
Give it up guys. The game is up.
At this point, if a killer shows up wearing a “Yes, We Can!” tee shirt, carrying a well-worn copy of a Noam Chomsky book in his back pocket with his place marked by his medical marijuana prescription, and then dropped his Democratic Party voter registration card at the scene before driving away in a car with a Greenpeace bumper sticker on one side and a Coexist one on the other, the media would find the evidence very, very clear….
The guy was obviously distraught by conservative talk radio. Or a Republican operative of some kind.
Winifred – really refreshing to read a considered comment instead of the vile kneejerk hatred.
This kid should have been in an institution; since the states have deinstitutionalized, many families have nowhere to turn.
There’s a great book called Crazy; written by the father of a schizophrenic.
Tragedy for so many people here.
There was a black Democrat on TV tonight, and all he wanted to do was to give everyone in Congress a payrise so they could get better security for themselves.TYPICAL DEM.
What about the others that got shot??? no security needed because they only go through it once.!!!!!
This guy is the LIAR Pelosi’s deputy,so that means he is as corrupt as her.
Krugman should be sacked.
Interestingly, Congresswoman Giffords has been promoting a congressional pay DECREASE. Way to honor her, there, lefties.
Psychopaths like former Enron adviser, Krugman, while projectile Projecting the imploded contents of the black hole that does every one of them for his “character,” Deny their own culpability — for everything — and, Nazi-like, seek scapegoats for the way their malignant, envy-motivated, rage-engined and hatred-driven self-loathing makes every one of them feel.
Let’s not forget our brave, bullet dodging Sec. of War, Hillary Clinton, who stated during her campaign as the possible Progressive Nominee, that she was going to continue to stay in the race and invoked the memory of RFK’s assasination as a reason…implying that Obama just might not make it until the end. Left on Left hatred. The problem with guys like Krugman is they can’t keep track of the lies they wrote yesterday.
Krugman wants this to be the Reichstag fire for his liberal friends. They might consider the source of their tactics.
As expected, PK does not disappoint , managing to abuse a central rule of economics along the way: Coorelation does not equal causation.
(And let’s not forget the president of the United States, who recently urged Latinos to “punish our enemies” and said at a rally in Philadelphia “if they bring a knife to the fight we bring a gun.”)
And lots of other rabble rousing stuff, too
I have come to the conclusion that Krugman is unbalanced and dangerous. Anyone with the power to reach thousands of people and uses that power to communicate disinformation, propaganda, and hate disguised as actual reality and news, is dangerous. I hope my newspaper drops him like a hot potatoe, but seeing as they are providing this dirty propaganda, I doubt it.
There is a certain logic behind the left wing attacks. I’ll prove it with a syllogism.
This mind boggling wisdom feeds on and into the left wing preoccupation with lunatics. Remember that Governor Palin is a borderline lunatic who (we learned from SNL’s Tina Fey) thinks she can see Russia from her living room. As universally respected deep thinker Roseanne Barr reliably informed us, Governor Palin is a loon:
Feasting on this profound wisdom, is it any wonder that our extraordinarily perceptive colleagues on the left make the claims they have been trotting out? Perhaps some of them even believe them
I must admit to some puzzlement about how we really stupid folks who can barely scare up a pulse, and therefore need ObamaCare to get the intensive medical intervention we so obviously need, have managed to do as much damage to civilization as we have; but then consistency is the hobgoblin of little (conservative) minds. If only we had their enormous wisdom!
Heh – the problem is, your syllogism is logically fallacious. The particular fallacy is: fallacy of the undistributed middle term. In this case, your middle term is: ‘lunatic’.
A comparison, obviously fallacious, is:
All dogs are animals.
All cats are animals.
Therefore all dogs are cats.
You are right, however; the left’s rhetoric is totally illogical. But that doesn’t stop them from their endless irrational, ungrounded talk.
Er, I think the faulty syllogism was the point, not an error. Also a nice riff on the murderer’s use of flawed syllogism. Great nuance, there!
The NYT editorial
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/10/opinion/10mon1.html?ref=opinion
“It is facile and mistaken to attribute this particular madman’s act directly to Republicans or Tea Party members. But it is legitimate to hold Republicans and particularly their most virulent supporters in the media responsible for the gale of anger that has produced the vast majority of these threats, setting the nation on edge. Many on the right have exploited the arguments of division, reaping political power by demonizing immigrants, or welfare recipients, or bureaucrats. They seem to have persuaded many Americans that the government is not just misguided, but the enemy of the people. ”
Note the contradiction between the first sentence and the rest of the paragraph!
Note also the assumption that the people cannot reject the agenda of the radical socialists in governmental power – by rejecting their, eg, so-called ‘Stimulus Bill’ or their statist take-over of the economy with their ‘Health Care’ bill. Both of these were pushed through Congress, the voice of the people, without reading or full debate. Yet – the NYT asserts that dissent against such actions is not allowed.
Oh, and what about the terms in this editorial of: ‘demonizing immigrants’? Who is doing that? Illegals are most certainly not immigrants and to criticize their illegal entrance and use of taxpayer services is – according to the NYT -not allowed.
And what about Obama’s rhetoric?
Obama: “They Bring a Knife…We Bring a Gun”
** Obama to His Followers: “Get in Their Faces!”
** Obama on ACORN Mobs: “I don’t want to quell anger. I think people are right to be angry! I’m angry!”
** Obama to His Mercenary Army: “Hit Back Twice As Hard”
** Obama on the private sector: “We talk to these folks… so I know whose ass to kick.“
** Obama to voters: Republican victory would mean “hand to hand combat”
** Obama to lib supporters: “It’s time to Fight for it.”
** Obama to Latino supporters: “Punish your enemies.”
** Obama to democrats: “I’m itching for a fight.”
What about the many threats and exhortations to murder Bush during his tenure as President? What was done about that?
What the Democrats are trying to do, is silence the People of the USA. Obama denigrates Congress, trying to deny Congress, the people, the right to read and debate his bills. He makes backroom deals to ensure their passage. And when the people object to this strategy – such dissent is called ‘unAmerican’ and vilified as ‘violent’. It’s all about Power and the agenda of the radical socialists of the Democrats to insert statism into the US.
Doesn’t anyone remember “Son of Sam” (up for parole by the way) who was told to murder people in Queens New York by his neighbor’s Labrador Retriever? A nut is a nut is a nut! The question that has not been explored is what if any interventions wee attempted by fhis family and cohorts?
Paul Krugman is a Frank Rich with an economics degree. This is the newsmedia’s desperate gambit to save itself by demonizing conservative rhetoric in order to justify an FEC attack on talk radio and blogs .
#54ETAB: MEMO to the SLIMES; This government IS the enemy of the people, and the SLIMES is its mouthpiece. The stalinists at the SLIMES are seeking to shut down freedom of speech by any means, no matter how loathsome.
“This message of Civil War is in keeping with the Republican refusal to recognize the legitimacy of a Democratic president, and, even more significantly, the first black president. It is a refusal to recognize a right to rule, and the outcome of elections if the ‘winner’ is not a Republican. Political legitimacy in this world equals right wing Republican. We saw this as Republican’s and Fox’s right wing commentators described Bush opponents as terrorists who hate America — in other words, as the enemy. We also saw this in the Republican decision to try to impeeach President Clinton. Impeachment is for a public wrong. It is appropriate for the most exceptional circumstances — when the office holder presents such a threa to the state or public well-being that there is no time to wait for the next election. The threat to the public welfare must be removed immediately because the person’s presence in public office constitutes an emergency justifying the most extreme response. When the Republicans chose impeachment as their political weapon to be wielded against Clinton and the Democrats, it became clear that they no longer viewed the opposing party as the ‘loyal opposition.’ They viewed them as a threat to the state. They had come to view the Democrats, and Clinton as the personification of the Democrats, as the enemy, not as the opponent.
Many say that the Republicans live in an alternative, parallel universe. While this joke is amusing, it does not quite capture reality. Two parallel lines never meet. Republican fantasies, broadcast by Fox News, are not out of relation with the rest of us. They are not totally out of relation with the world that the rest of us inhabit. They are at war with us. They relate to democratic policies antagonistically. Tea baggers and the radical right say they are at war. We should believe what they say. They are telling the truth of their convictions.”

What about Democratic Presidents, Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter ( Yes, Let’s not forget him), Clinton – Ready to take the foot out of your mouth?
Are we on the subject of BLACK President or a President of USA??? You are a RACIST!
“Many say that the Republicans live in an alternative, parallel universe. ” – Many say that about democrats too, but I actually believe that. No sane person, who cares about this country, can advocate the economic destruction of this country and enslaving of our children.
What do the hypocritical leftists mouthpieces trying to save Obama have to say about the October 28, 2008 life size image of Sarah Palin hanging in effigy by a noose from the roof of a house in West Hollywood?
Mums the word. Leftists. They have no decency.
So how many shootings and killings do you think happened in the Country last week? Lots! There are many shootings and killings every day. They just don’t get this kind of National coverage. We are a violent Nation and one where politicians will take ‘advantage’ of this shooting to work their magic to their own ‘benefit’? There is no advantage or benefit and we can see through the fakes.
I’ll make this easy for everybody. Elitists think they are so important that all good and bad to befall the world is either blessed to them or to fall as a curse upon them. Simply put, Krugman is afraid he’s next. He is the guy you see in the first scenes of every living dead movie ever made that gets eaten by the zombies as he struggles to accept the reality of the situation. He is a civilized coward.
I’ll be a month’s pay he has discussed with someone what he’d do if HE were targeted, as if that is the inevitable next step to this tragedy. He is also a living example that intelligence does not guarantee smarts. He would starve to death in days if New York stopped delivering food, die of thirst in his apartment if the water stop flowing from his tap or his Avian supply ran out.
Unknown to him is that we could care less, even less than we care about Hitchens’ opinions about the lack of God. At least Chris, until his lethal disease offers him the opportunity to find out whether he is wrong or right, is witty on occasion.
Krugman is a frighten boor. Another such creature is Olbermann, who I comment on at my website.

Mr. Krugman is a shameful person who in no way reflects what it is to be American…wait I take that back, he does partake in his FREEDOM to spew his ant-American rhetoric, while he tries to curtail conservatives ability to do so. That is the only characteristic that identifies this man as an American.
Shame on you Mr. Krugman…SHAME!

I don’t get your argument. Have you ever watched speeches from the USSR or any other dictatorship? They are not even remotely reflective of reality – so using them as “at face” assessments on even their beliefs is silly. After all NK is a workers paradise

There is a danger with this kind of thinking. I see people who think that all right wing things are good therefore any bad ideas must have come from the left, no matter how convoluted the thinking is required to make it so. Both left and right wing experimented with both limited government ideas and big government ideas, because at the end of the 19th century nobody really knew which ones would work. In fact you have what were then known as liberals to thank for the today’s standard of limited government interference in economic matters. I guess the point is that both sides have dredged out good and poor ideas, and there is a need to evaluate them based on something other than ideology.

I guess I would say two things in response. Contrary to what some say there really isn’t that much difference historically between European right wing and the US right wing. Perhaps the main difference before ww2, was the focus away from economic liberalism in Europe among the right wing as fascist ideas spread, but post ww2 that is no longer the case. Secondly the focus on small-government as a distinctly right-wing idea is a relatively recent emergence. Take a look at the ideas put forward by both major parties pre-ww2, there is such a large mixture of ideas that point to a real lack of coherence in ideology that was not really solidified until after ww2. We can retroactively say that idea X is right-wing and Y is left-wing, but to say that in those times would have left many people scratching their heads.

lets see, perjury by a sitting President. Yeah sounds pretty srious to me. I know,
I know if you are a good Baby Boomer you have no problem with a SITTING president
treating the oval office and whitehouse like a FRAT HOUSE
also, the term is Tea Partier and yes, it’s time to admit it the two parties
have ideas that are diamterically opposed – you believe America sucks and always
did and needs to be changed into Europe and we do not.
As for inhabiting a parallel universe – just stupid – Fox is putting all of the
others out of business. Are the masses that watch Fox the ones that are out of
touch with reality? what about the reality of Republicans picking up 635 wins in the last round of elections. I do not guess you voted with the realists
I think we should start a campaign where we send Krugman mirrors in the mail.
