Westhawk notices an AP story claiming that Iran financed the”Al Kabir gas graphite reactor that the Israeli air force destroyed in September 2007″.  The story goes, “GENEVA – A top-ranked Iranian defector told the United States that Iran was financing North Korean moves to make Syria into a nuclear weapons power, leading to the Israeli air strike that destroyed a suspected secret reactor, a report said Thursday.” Westhawk writes:

If this account is true, it is a very black mark against Iran’s claims that its nuclear enterprise is solely for peaceful purposes. The IAEA verified the presence of uranium at the destroyed site. And there was no evidence that Syria intended to build steam generators, electrical turbines, or any other such facilities that would be part of an electrical power station….

For the Obama administration, it is slightly awkward that this news came out on the same day that President Obama reached out to the Iranian people, hoping for reconciliation. As I discussed in a post in February, President Obama intends to put the ball into Ayatollah Khamenei’s court, leaving it Iran’s responsibility to either take a positive step, or take the blame for rejecting a peace offering.

The danger for the U.S. is that this course further commits the U.S. to the overall Iranian problem. Should President Obama’s initiative fail for whatever reason, he may find it difficult to back away from a process he has begun, especially if the world is expecting progress from him on the issue. Further Iranian rejection would lead to further U.S. steps, increasingly coercive. This would be a version of an “escalation trap.”

Wide-ranging acceptance that Iran’s nuclear program has a large military component only adds to President Obama’s peril. The consequences of mishandling the diplomacy will only grow.

The alternative to the “escalation trap” is the spiral of groveling. If the leadership in Teheran believe that the Obama administration is incapable of doing anything except offering more carrots then they will continue to behave as if a stick didn’t exist. Without a downside to their actions, the Ayatollahs will logically be motivated to hold out for more. And more. And more. The Times Online notes that Iran has already publicly rejected Obama’s overture. The administration’s response to the rebuff has so far been to offer more overtures.

President Barack Obama intends to press ahead with efforts to open a dialogue with Iran despite an apparent setback yesterday when Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country’s supreme religious leader, dismissed US overtures as a “slogan” offering no real change.

Obama and his aides had already been considering a direct approach to Khamenei as a possible follow-up to the US president’s unprecedented video address to the Iranian people, released on Friday. …

Although western officials agreed that Obama’s remarks represented an important change of tone from the Bush years, Khamenei appeared in no hurry for dialogue.

“Have you released Iranian assets?” the ayatollah asked. “Have you lifted oppressive sanctions? Have you given up mudslinging and making accusations against the great Iranian nation and its officials? Have you given up your unconditional support for the Zionist regime [Israel]?”

Khamenei nonetheless left the door open for future discussion when he added: “You change, our behaviour will change . . . We will watch, and we will judge (the new US administration).”

Iran has stated its conditions. Lift the sanctions. Make nice. Stop supporting Israel. By publicly offering to speak to Teheran without knowing what that regime’s response would be, President Obama gave it a chance to throw pie in his face, which it did; and it implicitly left the Ayatollah’s with the power to determine when its suitor in the White House would be sufficiently shaved, barbered and bathed to be worthy of speech. The President will have his dialogue in due time. But only after he has paid the price.

The spiral of groveling has begun.

I remember a news photo from the hostage crisis. It was of Cyrus Vance, hunched over, cringing almost, his half-glasses sliding off his nose, clutching his briefcase against his chest, off on a trip to “negotiate” with the mullahs.

Doesn’t anybody rmeber how that turned out?

    I see the future…

Hit lists of Jews in every major city in the world…

All apart of the George Galloway/Hamas freedom of speech movement…

Kill the Jews, it is the rights of the islamic peoples to cleanse the world of the Jew…

The lists are being drawn up now in England, Canada, America, Spain and such…

Jihadists are being planted in our midsts to take out the Jews…

    Think I am paranoid?

Just watch… But mark my words…

As they come for us and the world remains silent, after they are done with us they will come for you and quite frankly?

    I told you so…

But dont be surprised as a few of us Jews refuse to go down quietly…

The world hates Jews that refuse to be victims, they only love dead or bleeding jews…

Jews that fight back? are annoying…

I am only a honorary Jew, but that probably puts me on the list too. In fact, everyone but them is on the list, it is just a matter of sequence.

Make lists of those that are making lists. Liason and establish relationship with security agencies that have these things in their job description.

Wretchard: “The President…implicitly left the Ayatollah’s with the power to determine when its suitor in the White House would be sufficiently shaved, barbered and bathed to be worthy of speech.”

    A President sufficiently shaved
Said he’s pleased that if he but behaved
    That the Persians would bend
    And be willing to lend
Their good will to see that we’re enslaved

The Prez said then after his bath
That if only we’d all do the math
That it then would be clear
    That all we hold dear
Will be gone lest we follow his path

To the barber he hied with a ho
And when he was all set to go
    He flew to Teheran
    Which we know’s in Iran
His bathed, barbered person to show

The mullahs they smiled as they asked
Have you followed the orders we’ve tasked?
When the Prez said he had
    Ayatollahs were glad
And the Prez in their welcome he basked

But of course there is more to the tale
For appeasement is certain to fail
For the Prez failed to note
    That while sinking the boat
    Not everyone’s willing to bail

    I have a surprise for the Jihadists…

I do not advocate any charles bronson type stuff….

But I do advocate the arming of every Jew…. I see about 60% of American Jews will reject this out right, they will die….

But the other 40% have some surprises in store when the Jihadists come a shooting at the schul….

Let’s just say that a quiet number of Jews (myself included) are armed, legal and a deadly shot…

    I just will say this….

WHEN the Jihadist comes a shooting, dont be surprised to read that he was shot and killed and when the police got there he was covered in bacon bits…..

I am starting a movement to get Jews to keep bacon bits in their cars, as part of an emergency kit…

    Think i am kidding?

For any moslem reading this? dog hair and bacon, on any moslems killed while trying to kill us………. spread the word… In the morgue around the world we are shoving bacon up the corpses ass…..

    go to hell jihadists…

I think Iran is making a mistake dissing the One. The way you manipulate President Obama is you play to his pride and draw him in. He thinks he is smarter and better than Bush. Don’t show him to be dumber and even less competent — especially to the point where even the media starts picking up on it. If he starts taking it personal there is no telling how he’ll act. He might even throw the Iranian regime under the bus.

I thought the Iranians would be better at this stuff.

Netanyahu has a historical duty to perform. Israel’s boldest strokes were carried out when they thought no one else would do what had to be done, even if unsure whether or not it would succeed. Reading the history of the 1947-49 wars for Israeli independence or the prelude to the Six-Day war that caused Rabin to have a nervous breakdown (literally!) you realize the extent to which Israel has had its back to the wall in ways much more fundamental than even the height of the suicide bombing campaign of 2002. In the wars of independence, their arms were much less sophisticated but the strength of their society compensated in spades. In 1967 under the leadership of the forgotten Levi Eshkol they realized they couldn’t wait.

So the $64 question is whether Netanyahu with armed forces that would have seemed like science fiction to Ben Gurion and more dash than Eshkol has the intestinal fortitude to strike at Iran, even at the cost of his own career (much as Bush and McCain in their own ways sacrificed theirs to win wars). Netanyahu has a lot of flaws but I cannot imagine him content to let the Iranian bomb come to completion under one of the most unapologetically anti-Semitic governments I can recall, even for the Islamic world. I guess we shall soon find out.

  25. 25. Annoy Mouse

Does Israel do the west a favor by destroying Iran’s nuclear capability or does Iran do Islam a favor by destroying Israel? Either case would be a Pyrrhic victory for the initiator of aggression. Middle Easterners seem to love claiming victim so I think Iran is stoking vitriol to try to get the west to attack. In the end it worked out pretty good for Germany, Japan, North Korea, North Vietnam, and it seems to be working pretty good for Iraq.

The fact is Israel can finish the gaza, lebanon, syria & iranian issue in a nano-second… It’s just that Israel just doesnt want to do that unless they must…

  31. Since our President Barack Obama is said to be a master of nuance, I think his eventual apology for the 1953 CIA coup that overthrew Iranian Prime Minister Mohammed Mosaddeq should be laced with nuance. Our President Obama should say something like this:

The USA hereby formally apologizes for its CIA hiring a couple dozen street thugs to overthrow the entire government of Iran during the course of one day in 1953 in order to re-instate the Shah into power. The USA belatedly recognizes that the Iranian population profoundly prefers a dictatorship by its Shiite clergy over any dictatorship by a Shah or over any democratic rule by democratically elected representatives. The USA hereby regrets that its 1953 CIA coup postponed the institution of a politically primitive theocratic government in Iran until 1979.

The mullahs keep trying to drive a wedge between the people and the west and making nice makes it harder for the mullahs to keep the charade of the great satin going. Still, understand that it is a little demeaning. Funny thing though, as the law of contrarianism, McCain would have been the pussy cat to prove that he’s not just an old white ware monger… the worst insult to him; and in time, Barrack and Hill will sacrifice a beast of their own to show that they are not wimps and they will, if pressed, wage war. 45. 46. whiskey

The point Wretchard, is that Obama and his forces WANT to surrender to Iran.

Obama hates America, it’s traditions, it’s military, and wants to make America weak and humiliated. Even at the cost of himself looking weak and humiliated. He cannot help it, a lifetime of racial-based radicalism and hatred of “White Man’s Greed” makes him grovel and bend to Iran out of force of habit.

Of course, this enrages a good part of America, and satisfies others. Largely along gender and class lines. Women of course approve mostly of groveling, since they reflexively oppose military action even in (or especially) Israel. Livni’s backing is disproportionately female and suburban. The “Gentry” classes too believe in this, that “wars are caused by men acting aggressively” (call it the Rich Guilty White Guy syndrome, ala Phil Donahue) and so support the groveling.

I’m sure either Israel will nuke Iran first, or Iran will nuke Israel out of existence. Either way, it touches America only tangentially, at least in the immediate impact. [For the record, I agree with Murdoch that Israel's fight is our fight, in the West, generally.]

However, the dynamics go much deeper. Iran’s factions are at each other’s throats. It has not escaped notice that defeat and humiliation of the US during Khomeni’s reign allowed the Ayatollah to stand up a lot of “moderate” enemies against a wall for a firing squad.

Iran thus is egged on by Obama’s weakness to actually attack the US with a nuke. Through Hezbollah or other deniable proxies.

What’s the downside? Obama sending a sharply worded video? No one fears him, in fact he’s less feared NOW than Carter was THEN.

THERE IS NO DOWNSIDE FOR A IRANIAN NUKE ATTACK ON THE US. Period. As long as it is not launched from Iranian ICBMs, no downside. Obama will warn America that it’s our due, it’s our “chickens coming home to roost,” and that we need to beg Muslim forgiveness.

This is deeply appealing to Iranian factions since they can use this to execute opponents.

Weakness of this sort leading to say NYC being nuked and 6-7 million dead will naturally create some sort of removal of Obama, probably a rush to impeach/convict by shocked Congresscritters desperate to hold on to their seats and wanting a weak, pliable Biden as their guy. It’s likely long term to lead not to a Dem or Rep but a third-party populist like Jessie Ventura or Arnold or Ross Perot, but without the wisdom, stability, temperament, and political experience of those guys. [Yes I'm being sarcastic.]

But the weakness of Obama is not just the man, but the political and more importantly social forces that put him there. He represents a female and Guilty Rich White Guy view of the world, where original sin rests with “evil White guys” and every problem is solved by holding hands getting rid of those “evil White Guys” who ruin everything. See every Hollywood movie or TV show.

Obama is weak because his backers embrace and well, DEMAND weakness. Since their real enemy is the average working person.

Yes suffering and victim hood are perceived as saintly, especially when undertaken to serve Allah. In Iran and throughout the Shi’ite Islamic sect self-flagellation and extensive self-mutilation is intentionally practiced during the religious observance of Ashura, the remembrance of the battle of Karbala where Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the rightful Caliph, in Shi’ite views, was killed by his Sunni opponent. The battle of Karbala marked the final split between the Shi’ite and Sunni branches of Islam as to which was the true path Mohammed (bees pee upon him) related to the Ummah.

There are quite a few followers of the cult of al-Mahdi, the final prophet who will come at the end of days to bring Allah’s final justice to the world among the elite of Iran. President Ahmadinejad is it’s best known (in the west) adherent in the Iranian hierarchy. This cult holds up martyrdom and suffering in Allah’s cause as holy and righteous, so, there is in fact an obsession with death and suffering (they are righteous and holy) in the struggle against Allah’s foes.

How do you reason with fanatics who really believe this stuff?

Preferably with the help of two lead slugs to the center of mass and one to the head, or with thermonuclear devices if necessary.

Because we can’t afford to wait: I’ll repeat as I always said this; These are the twin axes of the worst alley/medicalprodeecure twin qui-ses, since the great bi-polar depression of the twenties and thirties, that my late father and mother suffered, so long ago. ( an apparent nod to all the X’ers and twenty somethings who supported his campaign)

“And we must act now, so this situation DOEN’T NOT ESCALATE, and we have to wait deades, to start seeing real results, for the American People”.

But as the meeting broke up, and memberds of the press dis-assembled, gathered in their sleepies and bathrobes too, began to consider whether or not to ask “What will this rough *neww* leaglislation cost the taxpayers?” Or wait til next Thursday, at the White House/Press Prayer Breakfast, They noted the loss of the tademark ‘cool’ that marked President Obamas most notable pastre-assurances. And just goes to show, how pressing and “urgent”, was the need Act Now, for the process of Reform

high praise, Walt, coming from a bona fide wordsmith genius –and don’t deny it, the proofs is on the pages!

  64. 65. Walt

Buddy, thank you for the kind words. But I won’t consider myself a bona fide anything until I get my novel published, and then I’ll be content to be a bona fide hack

I believe it was twobyfour who said the new magic word AMMO. Here is a view from that world courtesy of the Survivalblog.com
The short story is , if you haven’t got it by now, you’ve got a long wait.

“A man with the Customer Service department at Midway explained that backorders are expected to continue and there appears to be no reduction in demand. Browsing their web site, I see ‘expected’ delivery dates pushing further into the future, and up to six weeks delay for the less expensive and common caliber hunting bullet, mostly .30 caliber bullets. Many premium bullets are also on ‘back order’ since my last visit. And now, even less common caliber bullets are backordered as well as other reloading components and reloading tools. The shortage at Cabela’s also continues. The Civilian Marksman Program (CMP), advises that delivery could take 100 days for their still inexpensive M2 ball (.30-06) for the M1 Garand [and many other] rifles.

I believe that you’ve mentioned the possibility that “Ballistic Wampum” could be more useful than silver for the purposes of barter. The ammunition and component shortage is making a me believer. If events unfold as they might, the shortage could become increasingly severe and chronic. It may actually now be easier to obtain silver than bullets or certain and popular loaded ammunition. Over the last two years, I’ve done better with ammunition than silver, and have decided to trade in silver if necessary, for bullets. In memory of the Lone Ranger, silver would be a poor substitute for lead as the sectional density of a sliver bullet would be significantly less and therefore less effective. As I am no Lone Ranger, I would need all the advantages possible, and rather have the good stuff.

More folks are waking up everyday, and I suspect most of them will feel the need to protect and feed themselves. Many of those folks will be without the means to do as they discover that they cannot afford buy a good supply or any supply, and if able, may find that shipment could be months into the future. The Fed’s recent action makes continued and escalating hyper inflation a given. If delivery is months away, prices might change, or delivery might become impossible at some point. I’d error on the side of caution. – E.L.”

Those who have read me know I began a year ago warning about getting your kit together. Delay no further. I have spent over 12k in the past year on rifles and ammo, lots of ammo. Get ‘er done. Best of luck and pray we don’t have to send a single round downrange…but be ready.

“The spiral of groveling has begun.”

Yup. Obama will sell everyone out “for the promise of future negotiations” [Manchester]

    Fen @ 71:

You are right. Obama is a “gonna be”. Every good thing will occur in the future. God help us in the interim.

The thought of Israel having to try to do the job of destroying/delaying Iran’s nuclear program without the weight of the USAF and USN behind them is distressing to me.
We are neutered while Obama is President and the Iran nuke problem will have to be resolved with the US on the sidelines.
I hope that doesn’t mean the difference between an Israeli strike with conventional weapons and one with nukes.
It’s a long haul from Israel to Iran and they won’t have the staying power to go back day after day to make sure the job is finished.
I sure hope they take out Iran’s big refinery while they are striking at their nuclear program.
I think an effective conventional air attack with a widely broadcast promise of nuclear retribution if Iran ever initiates might bring things to an interesting head within Iran.
Their very young population hates the mullahs as much as we do.

Why are there so many moonbats commenting at Rosett’s blog?

    @ what is occupation
I am fascinated at how many American Jews have remained Democrat, remained leftist, and remained psychologically incapable of understanding the nature of their enemy.
What is it about those people?
Can’t they see the inevitable result of the characteristics of the European Jews who lined up, went to their ghettos, lined up and went to the trains, lined up and got sent left or right depending on whether they were worth working to death or should just be terminated immediately?
Hitler and his ilk are always up front about their attention and so is Ahm a nut job, Hamas, Hezbollah, the Brotherhood in Egypt, etc etc.
What is it these people don’t get?
Americans can afford to be slow to anger. They haven’t been whupped in a very long time.
    But Israel and wider Jewry???
is Judaism (sp?) so intellectual that they (with the exception of many Israelis) just cannot come out of their mental projection?
Does swinging chickens around their heads make them go funny?
    I’m amazed.
I hate to admit I am not surprised that women as a group voted overwhelmingly for Obama and tend to go fuzzy left emotively. Honorable exception Nahncee.
But the Jews should know better. There are still many thousands of them walking around with Hitler’s telephone number on their left arm.
Maybe Israel should be sending agents overseas and teaching Jews why and how they should defend themselves against Jihad.

I do not believe Israel could destroy Iran’s nuclear capability by using only conventional weapons. In order to collapse the underground galleries where Iran has its main nuclear assets it would be necessary for Israel to use a penetrator warhead with a low yield nuclear explosive. An important objective would be to minimize fallout and collateral damage (technically difficult).

The Israeli attack would not only trigger an Iranian response vis-a-vis the Straits of Hormuz but also significantly lower the nuclear threshold.

I am of the opinion that Israel SHOULD take out the Iranian nuclear capability. However it’s going to require a whole lot of chutzpah along with nerves of steel.
