Benghazi Blues

May 5th, 2013 - 2:42 pm

Shame of a Nation

No matter what happens with Darrell Issa’s congressional committee meetings this week, we are witnessing the beginning of the end of the Obama administration, and the cause is Benghazi. It’s impossible to overestimate the blowback that has been gathering steam for the past seven months, now about to erupt with full force. Few reputations will emerge unscathed, Obama’s presidency will be crippled, Hillary Clinton‘s 2016  candidacy will be destroyed — and perhaps some new heroes will be born.

My New York Post column on Friday, which was also linked at RealClearPolitics, sets the stage:

On Wednesday, the FBI released photos of three men present at the deadly jihadist attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya; the bureau has asked the Libyans’ help in identifying them.

Which nicely highlights the fact that it’s been more than seven months since Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other brave Americans were killed — and yet there’s been no justice, nor even vengeance, in the matter.

Nor much exposure: We know little more today than we did in the immediate aftermath of the fiasco.

That’s because, right from the jump, the administration has been lying through its teeth about what happened on the night of Sept. 11, 2012 — the eleventh anniversary of 9/11, as it happens. It transparently lied about the Mohammad video, threw the scapegoated filmmaker in jail (where, last time I looked, he still is), and  convened a bogus “accountability” board to whitewash the whole damn thing so as not to disrupt the precious Narrative that Osama was dead and al-Qaeda was on the run.

It was all a lie, of course, and some of us knew it at the time. I wrote about it repeatedly on the Post’s Op-Ed page: you can find examples here, here and here. In this case, however, what happened in Benghazi, Foggy Bottom, the White House, and the Obama re-election campaign headquarters in Chicago was (as the saying goes) worse than a crime: it was a blunder. And that blunder may now bring down the man who never should have been president in the first place, for grotesque dereliction of his duty as commander-in-chief:

Indeed, the State Department’s Inspector General is now investigating the Accountability Review Board that reported on Benghazi in December, Fox News reported yesterday. What Fox called “well-placed sources” say the IG is trying to find out if the State panel failed to interview key witnesses who’d come forward.

In fact, Washington power attorney Victoria Toensing — a Reagan-era deputy assistant attorney general with a strong background in intelligence work — says she’s got a whistle blower inside State who’s itching to go public.

But so far she’s been stymied by officials who won’t act on her request for a security clearance so she can deal with classified material the case entails. Other attorneys for as many as three other potential witnesses from inside State and CIA say they’re having the same problem.

In fact, some whistleblowers allege that they’ve been threatened with reprisals should they come forward — even though federal law explicitly protects whistleblowers.

At his Monday press conference, President Obama shrugged off questions about all this, saying, “I’m not familiar with this notion that anybody has been blocked from testifying.”

There’s another lie — this one of Nixonian quality.  From the moment Obama learned of the attack on the Benghazi compound — learned in part from Ambassador Stevens’ frantic phone calls to Washington, begging for help — what did he do? He went to bed early and flew off to Las Vegas in the morning for a campaign appearance; after all, first things first. And since Barry’s only real function in this administration is as its frontman/pitchman, he was only doing what he does best.

He’ll be aware soon enough. Next week, the House Oversight Committee, chaired by Rep. Darrell Issa (R.-Calif.), will open new hearings on Benghazi — and they could be explosive. He promises to expose new information the administration “has tried to suppress.”

Issa — who previously held the administration’s feet to fire over the still-unresolved Fast and Furious gunrunning scandal — has twice requested guidelines from State, but a department spokesman recently denied that any whistleblowers have come forward and scoffed at reports that they’ve been intimidated.

In fact, word is that some of the whistleblowers may testify that help in the form of a rapid-response force was only hours away — but, for whatever reason, was not authorized.

Hillary, about to find out what difference it makes.

This is going to be a significant test for Issa, who spearheaded the Fast and Furious investigation but wound up frustrated and impotent, unable to get the truth out of Eric Holder et al., although he did managed to get the attorney general cited for contempt of Congress. The Southern California congressman had better bring his A game and his best fastball as he goes up against seasoned prevaricators like Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state whom the late Bill Safire once memorably called — in the pages of the New York Times, no less — a “congenital liar.” In fact, what Safire, writing about Whitewater and other Clinton scandals, said back in 1996 is worth revisiting:

Americans of all political persuasions are coming to the sad realization that our First Lady — a woman of undoubted talents who was a role model for many in her generation — is a congenital liar.

Drip by drip, like Whitewater torture, the case is being made that she is compelled to mislead, and to ensnare her subordinates and friends in a web of deceit…

Therefore, ask not “Why didn’t she just come clean at the beginning?” She had good reasons to lie; she is in the longtime habit of lying; and she has never been called to account for lying herself or in suborning lying in her aides and friends.

The leopard hasn’t changed her spots, and it will be interesting to watch the Bill-Hill dynamic play out once again, this time with her as the object of the prosecutor’s and public’s wrath. Nor has there ever been any love lost between Hillary and Obama; she felt cheated out of the nomination by an upstart nobody with a negligible record of accomplishment in any field, but swallowed her pride and took one for Team Clinton in order to maintain her viability to succeed Obama. If he decides to throw her to the wolves over Benghazi, there will be hell to pay.

And hell is what is coming, one way or the other, because this time — unlike the Clinton impeachment — the big dogs are in play, in the form of hordes of very pissed-off special ops agents, patriotic spooks, forcibly retired generals and clandestine operatives who know where the bodies are buried. If the Obama administration turned its back on Chris Stevens and the three other brave Americans who died that day for crass political purposes — and, worse, if it let them die as collateral damage in its own gunrunning operation to Syria — the men and women who stand watch for this country all through the night are going to come out of the shadows, quickly.

Michael, you misunderestimate the opposing forces.

The VERY reason that Fast and Furious went nowhere, that Obamacare was a pack of lies, misdirections, a penalty/a tax, a hidden device to explode on the middle class and small business...the global warming redistribution scheme, the credit card security check system being shut off, the dalliances with Black Supremacists, domestic terrorists, and Palestinian apologists....why it all went down the memory hole...is because...their team is more committed than ours is.

Think about this carefully, Michael.

If the Agenda Media and their propaganda apparatus had truly been interested in "investigative reporting" on this story...where has that interest been?

And...if the "only" reason that Obama and Hillary buried four Americans was so they could bury the al Qaeda threat...that will be presented as "politics, both sides do it". It won't garner the traction you expect it should.

Fast and Furious...Brian Terry and 300 Mexicans died. That produced a yawn...and a successful stonewall.

Solyndra and Fisker...nothing.

Stanley Kurtz' explosive revelations...not a peep of interest.

I'm not fooled by the Agenda Media and their head fakes. It OUGHT to be explosive. It will be buried with nothing more than a wrist slap...and they will find a game plan to provide safe harbor for "their" side.

While hope springs eternal, and there is nothing that I want more that the fall of this "would be tyrant", I had this hope given to me too many times, nothing is going to happen. As an American citizen born in Argentina I cannot believe that Americans have chosen this man as president of the greatest civilization in the history of mankind. This man does not pursue power for power's sake, this man hates America and everything she stands for, furthermore I would not affirm that he is a Muslim but certainly I don't see any evidence of he being a Christian and I am not 100% sure but my understanding is that the Koran allows for lying to advance Islam.

Man so many conservatives (such as Michael Walsh) are such wishful thinkers living in la-la land, have so much in common with liberals there. This Benghazi scandal won't change anything, the public hardly know about it and they don't really care, the media are in the tank for Obama and Clinton. Democrats will go along with the spin and lies because they are Democrats. It's basic group think. Republicans at the end of the day can be counted on to dither, be divisive, gutless and do nothing substantial. As always. The Democrats are shameless and yes they are in control, and that is that. Yes some historians and other academics will tut tut over it, and it will have about as much impact as your average academic text on say anthropology, published by a University Imprint does on wider society. As in none.

Yeah history will judge Obama and Hilary harshly, but who cares for real history? Not the zero generation of 'booze party get laid and heads filled with Jon Stewart/Transformers/JayZ/twitter' lost youth and not their idiot parents neither.

Yup. Just posted much the same in reply to Michael.
So, what to do? Hunker down, prepare for the inevitable crash, and hope for the best?

Perhaps, but that's no reason not to try and do something about it, including changing the media focus. See Roger Simon's piece, which just went up.

I see where one of PJMs little children has been busy *reporting* the comments he/she didn't like.

Sorry Michael, for going off topic I couldn't resist since you're among the majority of PJMs principal contributors who has always gone out of your way to allow all fairly respectable comments on your postings.

Let me see if I have this straight:
1. Our ambassador freely chose to travel to an area that he knew to be extremely dangerous, knowing that he would not have sufficient security. I don’t think it was ever made clear why he went. What was so pressing that he would put his life on the line to go?
Question: Was it his idea to go?
2. When help was repeatedly requested, the administration and state dept completely ignored the requests.
Question: Are we to believe that there is this much incompetence at the highest levels? The actions up to this point almost seem intentional.
3. The administration & state dept went to great lengths to manufacture a story to feed to the public that had no plausible basis. Somehow, the intelligence community was sucked into, and endorsed, the lies. The story produced by our government was not only lies, but it was topped off by the accusation that America was responsible for the attack (American made video).
Question: Is it possible that we are chasing the wrong story? Was the ambassador set up? And if so, why? Think Syria.
Things just aren’t falling into place with this story.

It was most probably a CIA operation for which the diplomatic post was sacrifical as an unintended consequence, it turns out. All other nations had abandoned their dilpomatics posts because it was to unsafe and non defensible. As crude and insensitive as it may sound, the ambassador contributed to the deaths including his own, knowing full well, why other nations had abandoned their diplomatic posts. Then, he personally did not communicate a security concern until the eleventh hour as it were. A horrible circumstance for certain, but criminality involved by leadership? I think not! At best, monday moring quarterbacking, some strategical errors based on the cummulative information from which they had to work from at the time. NOBODY on here has that cummulative information and that, that is classified will remain so as it involves military strategies and security. But it seems, some political partisan superficial government employees may well be willing to sacrifice the latter. This is NOT an event to be played for self serving partisan politics.

HRC didn't do the talk show circuit because she knew the lies being pushed by bh0 would end her political career. Not that she isn't a talented and seasoned liar herself, but these lies were so obvious - she knew they'd fall apart. If any of this happened under a republican admin, the media would be doing a THOROUGH investigation leaving no stone unturned. Imagine if we had an unbiased mainstream media that actually investigated EVERYONE in our government and acted like the people's watchdog!

For a bit of reality. nations have forever used whatever their public infromation venues, to execute psych-ops. It used to be used nearly excliusively for interests of nation security and military strategical benefit. Unfortunately, in more recent times, corrupted patisan politics has come to be a continuum of such nonsense. Today, the overwhelming majority of this political corruption and lies is generated soley by private sector news and commentary media venues consumed with radicalized partisan activists. The few, once recognized equal opportunity, hard working, investigative journalists have retired or died. Now, we're left with a sewer of self serving political activists politicizing and misrepresenting everything they can get their hands on.

We are not the once exceptional nation of unified peoples anymore.

Yep. Remember Clintons tomahawk strike on the baby milk factory in Libya, when the "stained dress" revelations came out?

Of course, that was before Media Matters, and Think Progress, and the Journolistas were outed. Now its just more bored hand waving and cynical "tuo quoque" Bush did it-isms, out of Carney, faithfully repeated by the StateRunMedia, after deep background talking points have been disseminated.
