Why It’s Foolish to Expect Real Cooperation with Iran

June 18th, 2014 - 10:01 am

Throughout the battle of Iraq, it was clear that there could not be decent security there so long as the mullahs ruled in Tehran. They made no secret of their intention to drive us out and dominate Iraq. Indeed, top Iranian leaders, as well as Syrian dictator Bashir Assad, made public announcements that once we had brought down Saddam Hussein, it would be their turn, and they would use the same methods that had driven us out of Lebanon in the mid-1980s.

To that end, the Iranian regime provoked all manner of violence, from tribal to ethnic, because they believed they were better able to operate in chaos. In these bloody conflicts, the Iranians sometimes supported both sides. They backed al Qaeda (Abu Musab Zarqawi, the head of al Qaeda in Iraq, worked for years out of a Tehran base) and they backed Shi’ite terrorists like Muqtada al Sadr’s Mahdi Army.

This strategy was very difficult for us to comprehend, because it wasn’t possible to simply pick one side and support it.  The same holds true in Syria: Iran supports pro-and anti-Assad terror groups (I think this started as a scheme to acquire influence in any successor regime). Nor were we willing to acknowledge that Iran would continue to destabilize Iraq.  As the slaughter in Syria got worse, it became ever more urgent for Iran to control Iraq.  Why?  Because if Assad fell, Hezbollah would either have to relocate or risk disintegration, and Iranian strategists, from Supreme Leader Khamenei on down, picked Iraq as Plan B.

We could have acted effectively in these battlefields; the best strategy was to support the tens of millions of Iranians who hate the regime. But President Obama and his people do not want that. They act as if they want the Iranian regime to win, the latest evidence being the squeals of delight about possible “strategic cooperation” with the mullahs, our most openly hostile enemies.

It is folly to expect real cooperation from the Iranians. They think they are winning on every front (they aren’t; they are at mortal risk from their own citizens), and that Obama will never do anything to thwart them (this rings true). So they won’t do anything to improve our standing or national security. They will just continue to work for our destruction and domination.

Why does this appeal so much to the Obama administration?

Michael, Obama has been surrounded his entire life by people who have an axe to grind with America and most of whom really, really dislike Israel.

Run down the litany of his closest mentors, father figures, sidekicks, comrades and inner circle.

They are rife with Jew hating, Christian hating, white hating, military hating radicals of every stripe.

Maoists. Stalinists. Domestic terrorists. CPUSA members. Nation of Islam and Black Panthers. ACORN/SEIU thugs. Palestinian provocateurs.

A man who has ONE of these as his closest bosom buddy is suspect. A man who has one after the other after the other after the other...is not merely under suspicion...he's SEEKING them out.

They are birds of a feather with him.

Just as a gay actor can play a straight man role and vice versa...Obama has proven that a traitor can play commander in chief.

Woodstock Jihad is not a playful term I made up. I'm completely serious.

Jarrett/Obama/Malley/Power/Hagel ...an assessment of their inclinations vis a vis Iranian/American/Israeli positions of strength and influence....it seems abundantly clear that the secret deal with Iran that we are forbidden from seeing is no coincidence nor are the squeals of delight at the mullahfia taking Iraq.

Israel is being surrounded. And America is bound and gagged.

There's a bad moon on the rise.

"Reminder: Tehran's rulers are trying to destroy us."

Trying to hurt America some, yes, but no, they are not trying to destroy America as they can't. Now Obama, on the other hand, he is trying to destroy America and he has far more ability to do so especially as there is for pretty much all practical purposes no opposition party in America any longer.

Because the Obama Administration ALSO works "for our destruction and domination."

We have external enemies, and we have internal enemies. And they are working together.

BECAUSE WE ALLOW IT.

It takes hard work to measure up to the "Dead White Males" that are viewed in such contempt by those who set the pace for what thinking is done by Obama, et al.

Therefore, because of how flabby they are culturally, anything that involves work more than the lifting of a finger - that sort of work is frowned upon.

I have read ML for 10 years or more. Nothing he writes changes. Ever. Substitute "Bush" for "Obama" and these two paragraphs could have appeared in 2007 without changing another word. It's one huge reason I love reading his work. He is as consistent a thinker as anyone on the scene today, and anyone fortunate enough to have been following him all this time must be utterly convinced that he has the truth distilled down to a rather small number of durable, robust, and highly reliable insights. My only question: Does it make him go mad that he sees so clearly what everyone else is missing? It must be frustrating beyond words.

I agree that Michael sees the Iranian threat clearly. What he fails to do is give the Sunni Jihadists responsibility for 'their' Islam. He is indeed very consistent - and somewhat simplistic. Perhaps this is necessary to deal with Iran effectively, but it ignores the fact that the Sunni Jihadists - including in the Ikhwan that Obama supports - are far more numerous. It ignores the mischief that Saudi Arabia has done for decades, though it seems reduced now.

You're right on, drellmer. Mr. Ledeen has always tried to remind people that Iran is the dedicated mortal enemy of the USA and Israel - they declare it openly often enough, and act accordingly. Yet neither GWB nor Obama has ever elected to do anything at all about the Iranian mullahs. GWB championed the neocon warhawk nation-invaders and misty-eyed nation-builders, and Obama championed the determined anti-American pacifists - and as a result, no president has, since the days of Bush 41, ever championed the interests of the United States of America.

The Shia in Iraq appear to have sided with Iran. Russia and Iran were helping Assad in Syria, but are busy in the Ukraine an Iraq now. The Sunni's have a lot of American tax dollar equipment and will be making war on all who do not believe as they do. Including Israel.

Is everything going according to plan B?

The Shia are siding with the Shia. The fact that a nation named Iran is there is incidental. They believe in the same version of the myth so they're buddies.

Islam: the perfect storm of myth, tyranny and terrorism.

It's not clear that the average grass roots Shia Iraqi, however, wants to come under the thumb of the mullahs ... since the Green Revolution told us that a great many Iranians are also not happy with the mullahs' rule either. Remember also that there is this huge cultural divide between Persians and Arabs that goes back thousands of years to the days of Xerxes. That hasn't stopped the mullahs from supporting various Arab Islamist groups, both Shia and Sunni, from destabilizing the rest of the Middle East. But I don't think there will be widespread support amongst Shia Iraqis for coming under Persian rule.

There is still an opportunity for the United States to work with and influence the Shia in southern Iraq and thereby reduce the influence of the Iranian regime.

The problem is, Obama considers himself a friend of the mullahs and is desperate to ink a peace agreement (including nukes) with them. He has opposed all economic sanctions at every turn, and was only forced by clear bipartisan majorities in Congress to to accede to the limited sanctions now in place ... which Obama is desperately trying to relax.

The O regime has almost gotten too strange for mere words to describe.

Any military ‘help’ to the Iraqi regime can be counted on to go straight into the mullahs’ pockets. And O wouldn’t mind if it did. He’s trying to reorder the world to reflect the way his ideology informs him it should be ordered and he probably sees Iran as an instrument to that end. Before he gets his chance to complete the carnage, though, his administration is likely to disappear the way Lois Lerner’s e-mails did.

Michael - It's clear to me that the present leadership of Iran has, since the days of Khomeini, had the goal of maiming or destroying the US and has been motivated both by a revanchist (in the sense of restoring the Shia and/or Persians to to a dominant position) as well as radical Islamist ideology.

My question for you is the following:
How is it that over the past decades so many sound and seemingly honorable men in the national security, media and think tank establishments not only ignored this threat but attacked those who have been sounding the alarm?

It's getting to the point where Obambus is always doubling down, every time making an even bigger fool of himself but still hoping to beat the house. In fact, in his own mind he wins every time. It must be swell to be him.
