NINTENDO

Half a billion dollars for a company whose new console flopped, and whose handheld gaming business is being systematically dismantled by Android and iOS.

The Wii U (rhymes with “peew”) was such an obvious stinker I called it a “desperate Hail Mary pass” way back in October of 2011, months before it was even released.

Back in January Nintendo admitted it was looking into new business models. Now would be the time to act — but the company steadfastly refuses to port its beloved titles to other systems.

It’s time for new management at Nintendo.

On some more positive news, Nintendo did decide to stick to their principles as a family-catering company and refused to include gay couples in one of their games.

I have to say, I feel awfully vindicated. I've been saying for a long time that Nintendo needs to go the way of Sega to survive, get their excellent back-catalog out on services like Steam, Xbox Live, and the Playstation Network where people would eat them up - then license their properties for development on the hardware people actually want to use.

But no. I don't know what I'm talking about, fanboys say. Nintendo's secret genius, they say.

I hope they can rebound somehow. It would suck to see Nintendo not in the console business. Although it's been long past time to get rid of Iwata.

I assume that by "new business models", they'll mean "Concentrate on Cell Phone Games", like many other Japanese developers (most notably Capcom) are doing now...
