Welcome back to our Summer Songs series. This one goes back to my first office job out of college, where I worked with a great bunch of folks, most of whom I’m still friends with today. This song, “Summertime” by The Sundays was a staple on my favorite radio station at the time, 99X in Atlanta.

Summer Songs, to me, starts with Summer Time sung by Janice Joplin. I have long reguarded it as the only Blues song written by a white person sung by a white person. Maybe all the pain that Janice puts into it is all generated by self-destructive behavior, but Damn, that girl could sing.

In terms of their unique arrangements, guitar playing and Harriet Wheeler's vocals, they are one on the most underrated bands of their generation. I would've chosen Homeward off that album.
