The boycott/divestment/sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel has been the stuff of universities, investment groups and the American Jewish community until now. Thanks to the stardom of Scarlett Johansson the BDS battle has made its way into the mainstream. While pop culture addicts more attuned to the size of Kim Kardashian’s rear end will pass by the politically fueled story, chances are that the more intelligent among us, including ScarJo’s Avengers following, may take a second look at the morality behind the latest #BDSFail.

The players in this story have drawn a more definitive line in the sand than Walter Sobchak, with left-wing Jewish American sources like the Forward throwing early punches at Johansson’s presumed first move into the political realm:

…Johansson would do well to realize that “normalizing” the Israeli occupation is a bad use of her celebrity.

Justifying the sucker punch with statistics from the openly biased “Whoprofits.org” (“a project that researches and exposes ‘the commercial involvement of Israeli and international companies’ in the occupation”), the Forward got its own slap down from the Israeli leftist paper Ha’aretz, which lives too close to the facts to avoid them completely:

It is true that SodaStream employs hundreds of Palestinians under terms they probably wouldn’t get at a similar Palestinian firm and Birnbaum, to his credit, was willing even to embarrass the Israeli president in defence of his Palestinian workers.

ScarJo’s decision to leave OxFam was the star’s reaction to BDS movement leaders who demanded the international non-profit organization cut ties with the SodaStream spokeswoman who defended the Israeli company, saying:

SodaStream is a company that is not only committed to the environment but to building a bridge to peace between Israel and Palestine, supporting neighbors working alongside each other, receiving equal pay, equal benefits and equal rights.

Soda stream is a good product and few Americans even know, or care about this political nonsense.

It works and is fun to use but like that home snow cone maker, might end up in that cabinet under the sink after a season or two.

The BDS idiots have made no impact, true that stock prices are declining but it just wasn't the hot new thing on the shelves this year.

Israel is fortunate. The gas fields and oil reserves were found after Israelis created an economy based on few natural resources, a water deficit, and hostile trading environment.

BDS is a total fail.

Okay, the woman just got hotter, if that's possible.

I'm happily married to a beautiful woman, but facts are facts.

In 2014, when I hear "social justice," I hear anti-white, anti-Christian, anti-male, anti-heterosexual, anti-West and anti-American. Bigots are bigots no matter how much they don't wear hoods or flash swastikas. The modern bigot has wheel-chair access, pigtails, and allergies to scented products. So what? They're bigots.

I wonder what "unintended consequences" Ms. Johansson might face in her acting career for her support of an Israeli company. Will she lose some opportunities to appear in a film or even on stage? Maybe she'll be blacklisted by the Hollyweird buffoons. Whatever the case she must have been aware of the potential negative reaction of her contemporaries and therefore her stand for the Israeli company is even more astonishing.

Ms. Johansson actually DOES does have a history of political activism. On 10 Oct 2006 she said "We are supposed to be liberated in America but if our President had his way, we wouldn't be educated about sex at all. Every woman would have six children and we wouldn't be able to have abortions." And in 2012, she joined with some other actresses in pledging allegiance to Obama:

That kind of personal history makes Ms. Johansson's current stand all the more remarkable and admirable.

I see this as a companion piece to Jon Stewart's embarrassing Nancy Pelosi on "The Daily Show" Thursday night, though in that case it's the show's host and not the person under fire you hope will learn some sort of lesson.

Scarlett's now seen what happens when you fail to follow The Narrative and stray from approved liberal positions -- they're not just disappointed in Johannson, for many liberals posting over the past two days about the issue, Scarlett might as well be Sarah Palin for the way she's been treated. Meanwhile, over at Comedy Central, Jon's been shown first-hand that the person who said "We need to pass the bill to know what's in it" still doesn't know what's in it four years later, and really doesn't care all that much that ObamaCare's a miserable failure. Expanding government was the goal, not making health insurance easier, so in Nancy's mind, the Affordable Care Act is still a success, even if the website's a fiasco.

If your supposed allies will demonize you for one transgression, or if the people you counted on to know what they're doing -- to the point you mocked their naysayers -- are shown to be clueless, that should be a sign to re-evaluate at least a little of your own world view. But I doubt that will happen and instead Jon and Scarlett will just see these things as outliers, and will remain true to their ideology, while thinking it will work if only smarter/kinder people are in charge.

>>...this BDS brouhaha should drive her and her liberal pop following to question the meaning of hip concepts like “liberal” and “social justice” in light of the day to day reality...>

Nice thought, but it won't happen.
