THE NEW SPACE RACE: As NASA faces cuts, China reveals ambitious plans for planetary exploration.

Space journalist Andrew Jones, who tracks China’s space program, shared some images with a few details. Among the planned missions are:

2028: Tianwen-3 mission to collect samples of Martian soil and rocks and return them to Earth
2029: Tianwen-4 mission to explore Jupiter and its moon Callisto
2030: Development of a large, ground-based habitat to simulate long-duration human spaceflight
2033: Mission to Venus that will return samples of its atmosphere to Earth
2038: Establishment of an autonomous Mars research station to study in-situ resource utilization
2039: Mission to Triton, Neptune’s largest moon, with a subsurface explorer for its ocean

It would be easy to dismiss these plans as fanciful, and indeed, only the first two missions have been formally approved by China’s central government. Some of the concepts are tremendously exciting, but others appear unrealistic. For example, it is unknown how thick Triton’s ice shell is, and designing a probe to burn through that ice to reach the ocean would be extremely challenging.

Nonetheless, this scope of missions reveals that China is planning to conduct an extensive program to explore Mars and beyond, something that has almost (but not completely) exclusively been the province of NASA historically.

They’re certainly ambitious.

PROMISES KEPT: Rubio says at least 300 foreign students’ visas have been revoked.

“Maybe more, it might be more than 300 at this point,” Rubio said at a press conference in Guyana when asked to confirm Axios reporting on the topic.

“We do it every day. Every time I find one of these lunatics, I take away their visa,” he added, saying he hopes it’s even more than the 300 estimate.

“I hope at some point we run out because we have gotten rid of all of them, but we’re looking every day for these lunatics that are tearing things up.”

The Hill does its best to frame this as bad news but this longer quote on Rumeysa Ozturk, the Turkish student who was detained, tells a much better story:

“We revoked her visa. It’s an F-1 visa, I believe. We revoked it, and here’s why—I’ve said it everywhere, and I’ll say it again.

Let me be abundantly clear: If you apply for a student visa to come to the United States and you say you’re coming not just to study, but to participate in movements that vandalize universities, harass students, take over buildings, and cause chaos—we’re not giving you that visa.

If you lie, get the visa, and then engage in that kind of behavior once you’re here, we’re going to revoke it. And once your visa is revoked, you’re no longer legally in the United States. Like every country, we have the right to remove you. It’s that simple.

It’s crazy—stupid, even—for any country to let people in who say, ‘I’m going to your universities to riot, take over libraries, and harass people.’ I don’t care what movement you’re with. Why would any country allow that?

We gave you a visa to study and earn a degree—not to become a social activist tearing up our campuses. If you use your visa to do that, we’ll take it away. And I encourage every country to do the same.

Every country has the right to decide who enters as a visitor. If you invite me to your house for dinner and I start putting mud on your couch and spray-painting your kitchen, you’re going to kick me out. We’ll do the same if you come to the U.S. and cause a ruckus.

We don’t want that here. Go do it in your own country—but not in ours.”

THANK YOU, GLENN: Glenn gave blood recently and it reminded me of what a great blessing it is that we are able to do so for the benefit of others. Among those others is my grand-daughter, Beckett Tapscott. She was adopted as an infant from China by my son, Marcus, and daughter-in-law Morgan.

Beckett has Thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder that prevents her system from producing sufficient hemoglobin, a red cell protein that carries oxygen to cells throughout the body.

As a result, she has to have blood transfusions on a regular basis. Without them, she will die. Beckett is one of an estimated 4,000 Americans with this extremely rare condition.

She is currently involved in a trial that involves harvesting millions of red blood cells from her body, which are then genetically reworked to eliminate the disorder. It requires a long period of isolation because her body’s immune system will be reduced to nothing and then rebuilt through the altered cells.

Glenn’s post about his giving blood includes a great reminder to all of us. I know there are many Instapunditeers who give blood regularly. On behalf of my sweet granddaughter, I thank you.
