Magnitude-7.2 Baja Quake Felt In Southern California — Updated

NBC Los Angeles reports:

A magnitude-6.9 earthquake in Baja California could be felt in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon.

The quake’s epicenter was located about 108 miles east-southeast from Tijuana, about 38 miles southwest San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora, Mexico, and about 16 miles south-southwest Guadalupe Victoria, Baja California, Mexico.

The quake had a depth of 20.1 miles and struck at 3:40 p.m.

The quake set high rise buildings in Riverside, Los  Angeles and San Diego rocking back and forth. It also was felt in Palm Springs.

Numerous bloggers on Twitter in the L.A. and San Diego area reported feeling the quake.

Update: Looks like numerous strong aftershocks in the region on the Drudge Earthquake Map; Breaking News on Twitter reports “Earthquake in Baja California, Mexico upgraded to 7.2 magnitude,” along with “electricity, phone service out in parts of Baja California.”

Also on Twitter, L.A. Weekly has a photo of “power lines flattened in Mexicali”, along with “serious building damage in Mexicali” and of crowds fleeing Disneyland after the quake. Breaking News on Twitter has “TwitPic of partly collapsed home in Mexicali.”

Update: From Breaking News and CNN, reports of at least one death in Mexico:

According to CNN, while citing an unidentified official, said at least one person had been killed in the Mexican city of Mexicali. Local officials in Mexico are expected to make a statement on damage and casualties soon.

In the United States, although widely felt, there were no immediate reports of notable damage or casualties.

As Ed Morrissey notes at Hot Air, “California has building standards that greatly reduce damage and danger of death, and the distance from the epicenter also helps.”
