According to Chuck Todd of MSNBC just now on Twitter, “Van Jones has resigned. Release just went out after midnight eastern.”
Breaking News on Twitter adds, “CNN: White House green jobs czar Van Jones resigns, blames lies and ‘vicious smear campaign’ against him.”
AP adds, “Obama aide Van Jones resigns as environmental adviser amid controversy over past statements.”
As Andy Levy Of Fox News’ Red Eye show notes on Twitter, “Won’t it be weird when people who don’t get their news from the internet or FNC have no idea who the guy who resigned is?”

Jennifer Rubin wrote shortly before Jones’ resignation was made public that “It’s hard to believe this isn’t a fictional character dreamed up by Obama’s conservative critics. No, unfortunately, Jones is very real”:
This offers further support for the argument that Obama’s flock of czars should be trimmed or eliminated. (It’s not like the administration’s Cabinet-vetting process was that great either, frankly.) But that’s a tangential point at this stage. The immediate issue is that the White House, under siege for its leftward lurch and battling the tag that the president is out of touch with ordinary Americans, is harboring such a figure. It’s hard to believe this isn’t a fictional character dreamed up by Obama’s conservative critics. No, unfortunately, Jones is very real.
And this, of course, won’t last. Eventually Jones will go, and then the talk will turn to how incompetent the White House has become, letting a bad story fester and doubts to increase as to the president’s judgment and values. (Remember when we were told that his superior judgment was the reason to elect him?) That is par for the course at the White House these days—unable to do the right thing and lacking the common sense to fake it.
Speaking of Fox News, something tells me that Glenn Beck is going to have reasonably good ratings on Monday.

Van Jones, special adviser for green jobs at the White House Council on Environmental Quality, resigned Saturday, following weeks of pressure from the right and a flurry of revelations about his past statements.
“I am resigning my post at the Council on Environmental Quality, effective today,” Jones said in a resignation letter released by the CEQ late Saturday.
“On the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me. They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide,” he said.
“I have been inundated with calls — from across the political spectrum — urging me to ‘stay and fight,’” he continued. “But I came here to fight for others, not for myself. I cannot in good conscience ask my colleagues to expend precious time and energy defending or explaining my past. We need all hands on deck, fighting for the future.
“It has been a great honor to serve my country and my President in this capacity. I thank everyone who has offered support and encouragement. I am proud to have been able to make a contribution to the clean energy future. I will continue to do so, in the months and years ahead.”
If, as Levy wrote above, “Won’t it be weird when people who don’t get their news from the internet or FNC have no idea who the guy who resigned is?” — they’re not going to learn much more from this initial NBC report:
President Obama‘s environmental adviser Van Jones resigned from his post late Saturday evening after he came under fire for a series of inflammatory statements he made about Republicans, the White House said early Sunday morning.
Jones, Obama’s green jobs “czar,” was caught on tape in an expletive-packed rant, directly attacking Republicans in the Senate who he said abused their majority position in the past to push legislation through. He told Politico after the statements were released that the comments were “inappropriate” and “offensive.”
“They do not reflect the experience I have had since joining the administration,” Jones said in the statement.
The White House kept mum about Jones Friday, telling reporters only Jones would remain as part of Obama’s administration.
No mention of trutherism, self-admitted communism, support for Mumia Abu Jamal, etc. It’s all about those nasty ol’ “inflammatory statements he made about Republicans.”
Uh-huh. If that’s all it takes, watch for two-thirds of Congress to resign this weekend as well.

Amazing it took so long— more amazing the MSM actually reported the resignation. I’ll bet it will be all over the Sunday talk shows. Wonder who vetted him– Rahm? Gibbs? Axelrod? Jarrett? I wonder if Axelrod wrote the press release. Apparently Jones didn’t get the memo— people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. It’s not environmentally correct.

Great news but we – the American people – need to stay on the offensive against this administration! If it is covered on the Sunday programs I am sure the White House spokesmen will play down the public pressure and blame it on the Republicans in the Senate. Van Jones was very fairly treated. Glenn Beck and every other center thinker went out of their way to make sure of the facts. They double checked and triple checked everything said about him. Does he have any specifics of when he might have been smeared? If so, we hope to hear from Mr. Jones in the very near future.

Affirmative Action, Anal Cavities, and Van Jones
The whole notion of affirmative action is both racist and discriminatory. Giving preference to any individuals on the basis of the color of their skin rather than on the content of their character is patently un-American.
Now, where have we heard that before?
When affirmative action is applied by the White House to reward cronies with a plum job it becomes patently ridiculous, as in the case of “green czar,” Van Jones. His appointment had to have been an instance of AA. There’s no way he actually earned even a spot as liaison to the White House shoeshine boy.
Jones is a hack of the highest order, a racial agitator and a Vanny-come-lately to the green world. He latched onto the conservationist platform as a way to ingratiate himself to a wider audience and then was anointed by President Obama to be Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.
That grand mouthful of a title doesn’t come close to matching the mouthful of radical, racist invective and conspiratorial ravings that have been spewed by Mr. Jones over the years, culminating in his recent attack on Republicans as a**holes.
An obvious over-achiever, Jones has a history of vicious racial stupidity. That history must have caught Obama’s eye and convinced him that Jones would fit very comfortably in an administration jam packed with other turkeys, from Joe Biden to Janet Napolitano to John Holdren.
Much is now being made of Jones’ involvement in the “truther movement.” In 2004, as one of 100 “prominent Americans,” he signed a petition on behalf of that movement.
The petition called for a congressional investigation, an ”immediate inquiry into evidence that suggests high-level government officials may have deliberately allowed the September 11th attacks to occur,” according to the group’s website which also cited various “incriminating evidence,” http://tinyurl.com/3jg4x.
All of it is poppycock, long dismissed by rational people but dear to the hearts of rabid Bush-haters who still haven’t given up on the inane, insane charge that, “Bush knew!”
Jones may have signed the petition but now denies he ever agreed with its position and that “it certainly does not reflect my views, now or ever.” After all, he said, that was years ago.
Yeah, 5 years is ancient history.
So, here we have an Obama czar so detached from reality that he signs radical petitions with which he doesn’t agree, then dismisses the matter as occurring “years ago.”
How stupid is this guy to believe he can get away with that asinine defense? Does he think we’re all a**holes?

Van Jones was a weak player, hence the right wing smear machine found him to be too easy a target. He was way too disorganized in his responses and just didn’t have the proper brass to firmly B-slap down his critics. Obama has to realize that the people attacking him and his people have zero integrity and could care less about fairness, accuracy and context. He needs to hire people who can dish out more than they receive.
Before any of you yahoos say that his own words condemn him, go take a hard look at who else were signatories on that petition. And apparently at least some of the other signatories thought they were signing something a little less extreme.
While I’m not exactly thrilled with even a semi-Truther in a low level administrative post, in the context of the summer of 2004, when the petition was signed, it was sort of understandable: Bush, his people, and the RNC were in full smear attack mode against Kerry, the war in Iraq wasn’t going well, and it was becoming more and more clear that Bush had lied and was lying about everything and anything involving Iraq. All of this *could* make the 9/11 “truth” stuff seem a bit more credible than it did earlier.
But the worst thing about all this is that an awful lot of right wingers are going to be patting themselves on the back for their success at getting to Van Jones, but all they did, as is usual, was throw rocks in the hopes that someone would get hurt. It is very surprising that Jones, Obama, and others did not use the “racism” defense. That is the downside (from their point of view) of the MSM intensely blacklisting all media coverage of him. They did not leave themselves enough time to make him out to be a wise, selfless, noble black martyr, surrounded by hateful, racist whites that were out to get him at any cost.
It has been very amusing viewing crystal-clear videos of him on YouTube, claiming that whites are poisoning the water supplies across America to hurt blacks. And admitting to personally stealing and rioting just after the Rodney King verdict was announced. And boasting, loud and proud, about the various American Communist organizations that he has started up, or was on the Board of, or participated with in some way.

A local talk radio host (David Boze) had a Reagan aide on on Friday and asked him that question. How would someone like Jones get past the SS screening? an: If a VERY HIGH ranking sr. aide, or the president himself told them to give clearance, it would be a go, and that would be the ONLY way he’d get past the SS. (especially as previously cleared individuals can loose their clearance)
None of jonesy boy’ antics are a surprise to obeyme and co. (whatever they may claim.) they are all on the same page. Team Obama thinks it can win by running up the score in the first quarter with flashy down-field passes. Meanwhile, Team America is aware that the game will be won on the line. Every punt by the dems gives us better field position. The Jones’ resignation shows that our strategy is the right one. The rookie quarterback in the White House can’t connect when linebackers are swarming his backfield. Eventually we’ll sack him.
We can be confident now in the following:
1. The alternative press carries more heft than our opponents in the MSM can afford to admit.
2. There is a coach somewhere on the president’s staff with enough influence to mitigate his rookie mistakes (so far).
3. The game will be won in incremental steps, one yard at a time. Keep your eyes on the Rasmussen numbers. Hopefully, Obama will fumble at a critical moment, but there’s no guarantee.
We’re still on defense, folks, but the momentum of the game is changing. We need to keep up the pressure until we get the ball back.
Why should the MSM change spots and become a reliable conduit of what happens, without the spin. The change would have been noticeable, and they fear being held accountable for what happened before the change.

I’m advising caution about ‘us’ feeling powerful because of Jones’ resignation.
I had predicted that Obama would keep him – and I was wrong. But, I’ll maintain that the WH only got rid of him because of Obama’s speech to Congress on Wednesday.
Obama can’t afford to has His New Deal sidetracked on Wednesday by continuing questions about Jones. But, this event will set up a clear and open fight by the WH against FOX, against the Internet, against blogs. That is, the Obama Gang aren’t going to take this defeat lightly.
What FOX and the Internet and blogs shoud do now, is move in fast and start to ask questions about the other unvetted czars, – for such appointments remove the constitutional checks and balances and furthermore, set up an oligarcy, removing power from The People.

Remember Samantha Power? She was an Obama campaign official who resigned after she called Hillary Clinton “a monster” in a television interview. Then what happens? Obama appoints her to the State Department transition team and then appointed her to the National Security Council. Now that Van Jones has resigned from his prominent phony-baloney Czar job, in a few months Obama will appoint him to some other, less prominent phony-baloney job.
My bet is that what got him thrown under the bus was not Republican bashing and his avowed Communism but his anti-semitic rant on an album he produced in 2003 while he was in charge of the Ella Baker Center For Human Rights.

Van Jones is certainly entitled to his opinions; that’s the beauty of our Constitution. But all oaths of office require protecting and defending the Constitution, not subverting it. I’ve long believed that Obama was “selected” years ago by a committee sworn to destroy the middle class in America (while stealing a whole bunch). Obama was a compromise, he was clean and articulate but had some blemishes. Those blemishes are why so many of his records has been sealed, to hide stuff about him.
But, isn’t Obama and Van Jones the same guy? Couldn’t there be a number of reasonable looking black racists who have been well educated and groomed to take Trojan horse positions in government to work toward the ends of the selecting committee?
Maybe what is hidden in the Kenyan’s records is not his foreign birth, that he plagiarized his senior thesis or thar he had AIDS. Maybe, what is hidden is information that would link him to these other black racists.
And yet again we in the central-rightosphere prove to be way better informed than the ignorant masses dependent on just the state-run media.
Here’s what I find fascinating: the serendipitous convergence the past 2 – 3 days of the impending 9/11 anniversary, Jones’ exposed 9/11 Trooferism, and the depraved BBD-B/WWF 9/11 print ad/video story.
Jones was taken down with incredible swiftness once Beck’s and Gateway Pundit’s coverage spread through the rightisphere and alt. media. The message is not only that this WH and administration is embedded with aggressively anti-American cranks, and they are joined and supported by powerful factions in our culture including much of Congress, all of the state-run media, academia and industries like advertising, but also that We the People will not stand for this and will defend our culture and this country by all means available to us, including Alinsky’s Rule #12.

Also interesting that no one, not even conservative pundits, have mentioned that in the interview segment of Mumia’s show, Jones said that no one would tolerate occupation of his land for 54 days, let alone the “54 years” that Israel has “occupied Palestinian land.” Jones was going all the way back to 1948, demonstrating that it was (is) his opinion that ALL of Israel was “occupied Palestinian land” that the Palestinians had the right to get back: in other words, Israel has no right to exist.

Its good he resigned. I suspect he will not be the last over the next four to eight years. And hopefully, sooner rather than later. As we all know, President Bush could have avoided hundreds in his administration from going to prison for corruption, or from ruining our national image around the world if he had only fired them first or had forced them to resign early. He must have given Obama some good advice before he handed over the keys earlier in the year.

I love the text at the link praising Jones, stating his program “has been credited with a 30% reduction in incarcerated youth”. Credited by whom? Seems like an important detail to just leave out.
Anyway, your commentary on this point is just another reason not to take anything you say seriously. I was on the fence with Van Jones. Either Obama would take the pragmatic approach and dump him publicly (he will only be a speed dial on a blackberry away, y’know) and act like it was all an accident, or he would have just ignored it and put Van Jones on the back burner. That would have worked except for Beck hammering him daily.
The great thing about an advisor is you don’t have to vet him in and when you kick him to the curb, he doesn’t make the noise a VP or a cabinet member would.
As for Beck, if they were not upset at him then, they will be now. He’s drawn even a bigger target in his back.

The point of this thread, which of course you haven’t grappled with, is the sheer outrage of anyone, black, white, brindle, democrat, republican, whatever, who is crazy, stupid or malevolent enough to sign a petition suggesting GW Bush was complicit in 9/11, being appointed to a senior post in the presidential administration. Predictably, you haven’t dealt with that point.

If you go to places like Kos or Kevin Drum and read the comments, you just do not find any opposing remarks. None. Yet, here, at a site that is most likely predominantly libertarian and conservative, rightward, one finds many instances of leftward posters. Why is that? Is that rightward posters never travel to the other sites and only lefties come here to engage in the debate?
My own suspicion, given so much evidence, is that contrary opinions are expunged at the other sites. Just a thought. And another observation: leftward postings are almost invariably insulting and in your face. Why is that a necessary condition? I recall that during the Bush years if you read at their sites, they spent quite a bit of time patting themselves on the back for being so smart because they espoused leftward thoughts, usually the thoughts and opinions of other people, but still, that seemed to be evidence to themselves that they had discriminating and brilliant minds.
Ah well, I’ll take the tumult of the right side, where people disagree with each other and argue for their policy directions; where everyone doesn’t march in lockstep and where you aren’t pitched into the wilderness if you dare to question even the slightest deviation from the party.
You could see this coming. Those defending him are either incredibly stubborn or incredibly uninformed. You can’t say those things as a public servant.
I don’t care what Jones has “accomplished” academically…it’s what his “character” is that is important.

President Obama selected Van Jones to head green energy development. Supposedly a smear campaign boots him out. Yet, one piece of information after the next connected Van Jones with those who wish to dismantle capitalism. His choice of vocabulary regarding Republicans was not impressive. (The President has others about him whose choice of language is not impressive and whose finger use is not very classy.) For the sake of argument, fine. Capitalism is bad. But what did he advocate replacing it with? He never seemed to say. President Obama selects individuals who cheated on their taxes. They withdraw from the nomination process. Czars seem to pop up all over. Past administrations used Czars also. President Obama promised change. Yet, when push comes to shove, he becomes part of beltway he claims to despise. President Obama has frittered away a commodity Americans admire: trust. He has frittered this away when he came into office with an overwhelming majority in congress. I am beginning to think that President Obama is/was so intoxicated with his success that he felt that he could select anyone he wished, no matter what their views and he would prevail. My concern is that what Van Jones said and did pale next to the kind of statements which Reverend Wright made to Mr. Obama for 20 years, twenty years, XX annis. What kind of person have we chosen as President? Van Jones was not a political appointee but someone who was connected to the president in more personal ways. During the Roman Republic someone once asked a legal expert (Aquilius Gallus) the definition of criminal fraud. He replied- pretending one thing; practicing another. Somewhere all of this meets.
