The Marriage of Your Dreams

More and more writers are making online “trailers” for their books, but given the costs and logistics, these vids are hard to do well. Here’s a pretty funny one from my pal Rick Johnson advertising his new book, The Marriage of Your Dreams: A Woman’s Guide to Understanding Her Man. The part about men tuning women out made me laugh out loud until my wife said… something… I wasn’t listening…

Should this guy be allowed to leak this stuff. Isn’t that close to treason?
I’m not a fan of these book trailers. Movie trailers offer small parts of the product, scenes and songs and snippets of dialog from the actual product. Book trailers are full of things that are not in the product. Some of the ideas obviously can be represented, but it’s a completely different medium, experience, and product than what’s advertised.
Maybe I’m just a purist, but I do not like this recent trend in book publishing. Here’s hoping you never give in, Mr. OntheCulture.
I’m suprised to find I am a fan of these book trailers. The one for Adam and Eve After the Pill is very compelling. (I had to read the book after watching it. So I bought it.) This one is funny.
I suspect that right now people– who won’t take time to read a review of a book on a subject that isn’t interesting to them–will often be tempted to watch a trailer simply because they want to see how well done the trailer is.
The Man Whisperer , a book by the same author, is a title as good as this trailer for The Marriage of Your Dreams for anyone who viewed that corny Robert Redford movie The Horse Whisrerer. I’ll try that book first.
