American forces are assaulting Saddam International Airport in Baghdad.
U.S. military officers with the 3rd Infantry Division told an Associated Press reporter embedded with the unit that the attack on the Saddam International Airport had begun.
The airport is located about 12 miles southwest of the center of Baghdad. Earlier, embedded correspondents with the Reuters news agency said U.S. military units were within six miles of the city.
ABCNEWS’ Ted Koppel, traveling with the 3rd Infantry Division on “the doorstep of Baghdad,” said there were firefights raging along a six-lane highway leading to the airport.
A few more days to secure and get the airport operational again (we’ve cratered the runways and such) and then much of our supply problem will be solved.
This is big.
