Last week, former Cleveland Browns running back Jim Brown, widely considered one of the greatest football players of all time, endorsed President Donald Trump’s 2020 re-election bid. On Monday morning, the president tweeted his thanks, and touted the record-low black unemployment under his presidency.
“Thank you to the great [Jim Brown], perhaps the greatest running back of all time, for your wonderful words and support,” Trump tweeted. “Since our meeting in New York, African-American UNEMPLOYMENT has reached the LOWEST LEVEL IN HISTORY. You get it!”

Jim Brown, who was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971, has been named the greatest professional football player ever by The Sporting News and the New York Daily News. Appearing on “The JT The Brick Show” on Fox Sports Radio last week, Brown announced his 2020 endorsement for Trump. The football legend had met with the then-president-elect in December 2016, reporting, “I fell in love with him.”
“I should be criticizing Trump on every level because he does certain things that call for criticism but when I look at television I see all these announcers become experts and they’re pointing the fingers and they’re not doing a doggone thing but pointing their fingers, I find myself really pulling for the president,” Brown said, the Daily Wire’s Joseph Curl reported.
“Now, that would make me very unpopular in the black community, very unpopular with a lot of Americans … but I think that there are certain good things that are coming out of this presidency because we’ve never seen anything like it,” Brown added.
The football legend said endorsing Trump is his duty as a good American. “I believe that I have to work on myself first to be as good a person as I could be to back up my country as best as I know how,” he explained.
As for the African-American unemployment rate, it did hit record lows, and has since risen slightly, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This may, the rate bottomed out at 5.9 percent, rising slightly to 6.6 in July.
This low unemployment is truly historic, but many in the black community continue to oppose Trump, calling him racist or otherwise offensive. Brown’s stance was indeed brave, and Trump’s praise quite warranted.
