It’s Academy Awards time which means Hollywood will get dressed up in its most revealing, sexually provocative dresses and least appropriate formal attire to wallow in narcissistic glory for at least three hours (usually much longer).
Of far more interest to the average moviegoer is not the Best Picture or Best Actor awards, but The Razzies — the annual list of the worst of the worst Hollywood movies.
This year, politics is featured — as you might expect. Even The Razzies are liberal. But it’s still fun to see just how bad some of the biggest Hollywood celebrities can blow it when given the money and the deficient script to make god-awful entertainment.
The voters went political this year, with “Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party” winning worst picture.
It faced superhero-tough competition for the year’s worst film with “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
“It all came down to two decidedly different examples of cinematic sludge: The $250 million comic book oop-us ‘Batman v Superman’ and the faux right wing ‘documentary’ ‘Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party,'” a statement from the Razzies read.
Both films received four Razzie Award trophies, traditionally announced the day before the Academy Awards.
Besides worst picture, “Hillary’s America” also won worst actor and director for Dinesh D’Souza (who played himself), worst actress for the unnamed person who played Clinton and worst director.
D’Souza was a good sport about it and appeared in the video announcement of the winners.
“Batman v Superman” took home trophies for worst screenplay, worst supporting actor for Jesse Eisenberg, worst remake rip-off or sequel, and worst screen combo for stars Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill.
“Zoolander 2” received one award for worst supporting actress for Kristen Wiig.
Some of the nominees that didn’t “win” were interesting. Independence Day: Resurgence was nominated even though I found it very enjoyable, if not as entertaining as the original (certainly not one of the worst films of the year). ID2 was nominated for worst screenplay, worst director, and worst remake.
Also nominated but failing to win was the interminable, boring Gods of Egypt. Usually, I’m a sucker for these historical dramas from antiquity (Ben-Hur, The Ten Commandments, Cleopatra). But I just couldn’t get interested in the confusing story and dull, dull, dull overacting.
It was also nice to see the sexually titillating 50 Shades of Black get nominated in the “Worst Sequel” category. I’m no prude, not by a long shot. But congratulations should go out to everyone who worked on this film. They actually succeeded in making sex boring.
