Embattled University of Missouri professor Melissa Click was suspended Wednesday night by the UM Board of Curators, pending further investigation. This comes three days after Click was charged with third-degree assault for an incident that occurred during a campus protest last November.

Pam Henrickson, chair of the UM Board of Curators, issued the following statement at the conclusion of Wednesday night’s special board meeting:“MU Professor Melissa Click is suspended pending further investigation.The Board of Curators directs the General Counsel, or outside counsel selected by General Counsel, to immediately conduct an investigation and collaborate with the city attorney and promptly report back to the Board so it may determine whether additional discipline is appropriate.”
Click, a communications professor, pleaded not guilty to the third-degree assault charge, even though her attempt to forcibly remove videographer Mark Schierbecker from the media-free “safe space” at the protest was caught on video. When Schierbecker refuses to leave the area, Click is seen shoving him and grabbing at his camera.
Possible penalties for third-degree assault in Missouri include a fine of up to $1,000 and up to a year in jail.
