With just a week to go before the Iowa caucuses, former Texas governor Rick Perry has endorsed senator Ted Cruz for president. Perry announced his choice in a video, and released the news to Politico on Sunday night. “Of those individuals who have a chance to win the Republican primary, at this juncture, from my perspective, Ted Cruz is by far the most consistent conservative in that crowd,” Perry said, adding that the race “appears to be down to two people.”
His endorsement comes in the wake of National Review‘s scathing hit on Donald J. Trump, which depicted Trump as an unreliable conservative. In his video endorsement, Perry offered the same message: “2016 is a critical election and I’m here to stress to you how important it is for conservatives to rally together and support a consistent conservative candidate who will take on Washington and who can defeat the democrat nominee.”
Perry suspended his own presidential campaign in June, and his donors have flocked to Cruz.
Emphasizing his status as an Air Force veteran, Perry said that Cruz “has proven that he is ready to serve as our Commander-in-Chief on day one.” Perry added that Cruz has “also proven the willingness to take on the Washington cartel and restore power and opportunity back to the people.”
“Ted is the leader that we need to reignite the promise of America,” Perry concluded. “That’s why I’m supporting Ted Cruz, and asking Iowa Republicans to caucus for Cruz next Monday.” Perry will campaign with Cruz Tuesday across Iowa, and will join Iowa Representative Steve King to stump for Cruz on Wednesday. Both Perry and King will join Cruz at a Des Moines rally Wednesday night.
