In 1776, the Battle of  Sullivan’s Island occurred; it’s marked as Carolina Day today.

In 1776, Gen. George Washington squared off against British Gen. Henry Clinton at the Battle of Monmouth.

In 1865, the Army of the Potomac was formally disbanded.

In 1894, Labor Day became an official US holiday.

In 1902, Congress passed the Spooner Act, which allowed President Teddy Roosevelt to acquire rights from Colombia to build the Panama Canal.

In 1914, Austrian Archduke Franz-Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo. World War I soon followed.

In 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed, ending World War I, and setting the stage for World War II.

In 2004, the Iraqi interim government officially assumed sovereignty from the Coalition Provisional Government.
