In 1782, Congress adopted the Great Seal of the United States.

In 1787, Oliver Ellsworth moves at the federal convention to give the government a new name: the United States Government. Ellsworth later served as Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court.

In 1819 the USS Savannah arrives in London, becoming the first steam-powered vessel to cross the Atlantic.

In 1840, Samuel Morse receives the patent for the telegraph.

In 1863, West Virginia becomes a state.

And in 1944, the US wins the Battle of the Philippine Sea.
