Yesterday afternoon I did a Facebook Live video for the PJ Media page that discussed the possibility of Kid Rock running for the United States Senate in Michigan. At the time, it seemed as if it were just a marketing stunt, albeit a pretty good one.

In a post on his own website titled “Once Again The Press Is Wrong,” the singer assured everyone that he is quite serious about it:

Once again the press is wrong. First of all, I’ve got 15 days from my announcement to file paperwork with the FEC! Second, I’m not signed to Warner Bros!!! – which simple fact-checking would have revealed. I have recently worked out a unique deal with BMG, Broken Bow, CAA and Live Nation to release music ON MY TERMS. Like politicians write books during their campaigns, I’m planning on putting out music during mine and IT ALL STARTS TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT. It’s not a hoax, it’s a strategy and marketing 101! No plans for an album or anything else that has been the usual norm in the music business OR politics…..and…..

Senator Stabenow and I do share a love of music, although probably not the same kind. I concede she is better at playing politics than I am so I’ll keep doing what I do best, which is being a voice for tax paying, hardworking AMERICANS…

The maybe-future senator then adds some not-too-family-friendly cheerleading that will probably go over big on the campaign trail. He is also slightly off on the rules of filing. The FEC site has a different threshold for when the 15-day window begins:

If you are running for the U.S. House, Senate or the Presidency, you must register with the FEC once you (or persons acting on your behalf) receive contributions or make expenditures in excess of $5,000. Within 15 days of reaching that $5,000 threshold, you must file a Statement of Candidacy (FEC Form 2 [PDF]; Instructions [PDF]) authorizing a principal campaign committee to raise and spend funds on your behalf.

He’s probably still good to go.

But he’s also still a brilliant marketer and this could all be another layer of hype.

It’s 2017 and all bets are off.

Meanwhile, the American public wants what the American public wants:
