However else history will judge him, President Donald Trump is easily the funniest president in U.S. history, and that is another thing about him that drives the angry, humorless left crazy. The scolds and harridans, the enraged and offended, the victims of all the various phobias that leftists have invented to guilt-trip people into thinking that there’s something wrong with them if they aren’t leftists, are proud above all things. They love their pride and celebrate it, devoting whole months on end to it, and as Thomas More once observed, “The devil is a proud spirit. He cannot endure to be mocked.” Trump mocks the left, and indeed, as the merry saint of King Henry VIII’s England observed, they cannot endure it.

“I said TARIFF is my favorite word in the dictionary! Then the fake news attacked: ‘What about God? Family? Wife? Children?’ They thought they GOT ME!”
“So now I say tariff is my FIFTH… pic.twitter.com/zxZyIEvXcQ
On Friday in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Trump mocked them again, saying: “Remember when I said, ‘The word “tariff” is my favorite word in the dictionary.’ Remember? And then the fake news got me: ‘What about religion? What about God? What about your family? What about your wife? What about your children?’ I said, ‘Oh, they got me with this one!’ So now ‘tariff’ is my fifth favorite word. And now I’m okay. It’s my fifth. Five. Now I’m okay.”
Nevertheless, the establishment media is still working hard to try to make “tariff” one of the president’s least favorite words. The Hill ran an op-ed on Friday with the headline “Despite a resilient economy, Trump’s tariffs have not delivered.” CBC trotted out a certain Justin Wolfers, an economics professor at the University of Michigan, which means he is far, far to the left, and a senior fellow at the Qatar-funded Brookings Institution, to intone sagely: “What we are doing is not working.”
Well, that ain’t necessarily so. The White House website states: “The trade deficit has narrowed to its smallest since mid-2020, down more than 35% over last year — and more proof that President Donald J. Trump’s America First trade agenda is working.” The White House noted that “U.S. exports are up 6% over last year — rising to their second-highest value on record — while Inflation-adjusted exports of consumer goods are the largest ever.”
Meanwhile, “in the third quarter of 2025, real exports grew by a 4.1% annual rate and imports fell by around 5% — adding about 1% to real GDP growth.” The result? “As President Trump delivers better terms for American workers, farmers, and manufacturers, November’s deficit was cut by more than half compared to the same month last year, fueled by soaring tariff revenues.”
The establishment media, however, acting as always as the propaganda arm for the hard-left, has a vested interest in painting as negative picture of all this as possible, not only because it hates Trump more than it has ever hated anyone, but also because tariffs are anathema to socialist internationalists.
This is, after all, the media that turned a blind eye to the crisis that the Biden regime created by opening the southern border, and that portrayed all those who called for a secure border as racist, bigoted, xenophobic yahoos. A media that dreams of a supranational, multicultural socialist utopia is never going to look kindly upon the idea of tariffs, which are designed to benefit American workers and American businesses.

And so The Hill warns us darkly that “tariffs have not lived up to President Trump’s billings.” For while (according to The Hill, anyway) American businesses, households, and manufacturing have suffered, “China, in comparison, is enjoying a manufacturing boom. It reported a 7 percent increase in manufacturing output in the first 10 months of the year and an overall trade surplus of more than $1 trillion for the year as of November.” The Hill doesn’t mention what the White House points out, that “the seasonally adjusted trade deficit with China has narrowed to its second-smallest since 2009.”
There is thus ample reason for “tariff” to be Trump’s fifth favorite word, even as his enemies weep and gnash their teeth as they record him saying so happily and humorously to an appreciative crowd. Leftists like to portray patriots as angry, miserable people, but all too often this is a case of projection, in which they are professing to see in those they hate the qualities that they most often display themselves. Trump, the happy warrior, is enjoying his successes with tariffs, and the people who support him are happy to see him do so. In their rage and hate, this is something leftists will never understand.
