Rep. Gutiérrez: 'The Republican Party Has Had Mexican Fever'

Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL) went off on Republicans’ efforts to pass Kate’s Law and other illegal immigration reforms. He said on the House floor: “This policy is about going after all of us, whether we are citizens or not of the United States of America. These bills are nothing new and they are not really about fighting crime. They are about racial profiling and putting Latinos ‘in their place.'” He asserted that the anti-undocumented bills are a distraction, rather than realistic pieces of legislation: “Healthcare not going well? Let’s just hate some Mexicans today.” Kate’s Law, and the associated bills, would create harsher penalties for illegal immigrants who commit crimes, and also would allow citizens to hold sanctuary cities accountable for anything undocumented aliens do. Kate’s Law is named for Kate Steinle, who was murdered by an illegal immigrant who was in the country despite several deportations and attempts to remove him.
