CNN aired a clip of that appeared to show the sister of Milwaukee shooting victim Sylville Smith calling for peace in the city. But she was actually calling for violence…in the suburbs.
Smith fled on foot during a police stop. When he turned around and pointed a gun at the officers pursuing him, he was shot and killed by police officers.
The network showed a news clip of Sherelle Smith “calling for peace.”
“Don’t bring the violence here and the ignorance here,” she pleaded. And she meant it literally: don’t bring the violence to her neighborhood.
“Burning down shit ain’t going to help nothing!” Smith told the assembled protesters and reporters. “Y’all burning down shit we need in our community.”
“Take that shit to the suburbs. Burn that shit down!” she said. “We need our shit! We need our weaves. I don’t wear it, but we need it.”

Following the shooting on Saturday, Milwaukee saw several days of violence and riots that left police officers hospitalized, businesses set on fire, cars torched and people shot.
CNN told Mediaite: “An earlier version of this story mischaracterized what the victim’s sister was trying to convey. She was calling for peace in her community, urging the protesters to go elsewhere.”
The network has updated its website to include the complete remarks of Smith calling for the violence to move from the city to the suburbs.
