For kids who are stuck in the hospital for weeks or months on end, treatments can sometimes be overwhelming and life can get very boring day in and day out. But Edgar Palomo, a nurse in hematology/oncology at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas, has a special way to add a little fun and some smiles to the children he treats. It turns out that Palomo isn’t just a talented nurse, but quite the artist as well.
In his brief moments of spare time while working, Palomo decorates the dry-erase board on the oncology floor with elaborate works of art that the kids are bound to recognize. Sometimes he only has 15 minutes to devote to a piece, and so he can sometimes work for up to two weeks before a picture is complete. But for the children who look forward to his marker creations, the effort is well worth it.
According to the Huffington Post,
Palomo started sharing his art around the hospital about three years ago. He said he wants to “liven it up” in the unit with his drawings.
“From what I’ve seen, it tends to make the kids and even the parents really happy,” he said. “Anything to normalize the environment and cheer them up.”

Kim Griffith, media relations specialist at the hospital, told HuffPost that the kids who get to interact with Palomo adore him and enjoy seeing his drawings as well as playing Xbox with him.
“He’s just a really crucial part of our H/O department,” she said.
While his works of art include such kid favorites as “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Wizard of Oz,” Palomo has also gotten some more challenging requests, like The Mona Lisa. The hospital shared some of Palomo’s drawings on its Facebook page, and parents and patients alike shared their stories of their interactions with the beloved nurse.
