Boy Late for School Stops, Says Pledge of Allegiance Before Going Into Kindergarten

A little boy made his mama very proud in front of his school in Santa Fe, Texas, last Thursday, but not before causing her some confusion and consternation.

The mother couldn’t figure out why her 5-year-old son had stopped abruptly in front of the school building after she dropped him off. He was running late and all the other kids were rushing by him to get to class. The frustrated mom said she yelled, “Royce…go…go!” as kids walked around him. When she found out what he was doing, she took a picture and posted it on Facebook. And now that heart-warming pic is going viral:

Via Fox 5 San Diego:

Heather Nelson says her son Royce was running late for kindergarten when he suddenly stopped and bowed his head, several feet in front of the main doors.

“I was about four cars back so I just saw him standing there with what looked like him just looking at his shoes,” Nelson remembered. “But that did not seem like Royce.”

Nelson says she found out what he was doing when the officer outside the school told her “Mom, he’s doing good, he stopped for the Pledge of Allegiance,” putting a hand over her heart to demonstrate.

“Since they do not have prayer in schools he says a little prayer silently and that’s exactly what he was doing,” Nelson wrote. “I was so proud that he stopped when the Pledge of Allegiance came and stood his ground and did not move as the other kids were going in.”

When his mom later asked him what made him do it, Royce said simply, “that’s what you’re supposed to do.”

Said Officer Cibby Moore, “I couldn’t believe that he acknowledged that moment — that you need to stop and say the pledge. And he did. He just ignored all the other kids around him and kept doing it. It was awesome.”

“He is such a cutie patootie and very, very shy,” said Fox 26’s Emily Akin. Nelson’s Facebook post has been shared over 2 thousand times, but believe it or not, not all of the commenters have been friendly according to Fox 26. “She’s had some negative comments and that’s just not cool,” Akin reported.
