VIDEO: Democrats Protest Lack of Debates Outside DNC

The Democratic National Committee has yet to host a presidential debate and some voters are frustrated with the party.

Protestors gathered outside of the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington before the last GOP debate to call on DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-Fla.) to add more Democratic presidential debates to the schedule. The DNC has also said candidates are not allowed to participate in unsanctioned debates.

The group delivered 35,000 signatures to a member of the DNC staff during the protest.

At this time, the party will host 4 debates before the Iowa caucuses take place. Two other debates are scheduled for after Iowa. The Republican Party has held two debates so far.

The protesters chanted “give us more debates before it’s too damn late” and “2, 4, 6, 8, everybody should debate.”

“It’s just insane we’re not having more debates. Back in 2012 they had the same number of DNC-sponsored ones, it’s just that they let them do other ones also, they didn’t have this crazy rule to stop them,” said one protester.

“It’s important that we get to choose. I mean, it seems asinine to even have to state the fact that we get to choose the best candidate and we can only do that by getting to hear all the different opinions that all the different candidates have,” said another voter at the protest.

Despite the pressure for additional debates, Wasserman-Schultz has vowed to hold her position.

“Every time a candidate has to engage and get ready for a debate, they have to come off the trail and that means that they are going to not get as much of an opportunity from the voters to be seen up close and personal,” she recently said.

Liz Smith, deputy campaign manager for presidential candidate and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, said the DNC is letting the Republican candidates dominate the national debate by waiting until Oct. 13 for the first debate in Las Vegas.

“In absence of another explanation from the DNC, I think that’s the perception that it gives — that they are trying to stack the deck for Secretary Clinton,” Smith said at the protest.
