If you want to know just how disastrous special counsel Robert Mueller’s testimony yesterday to the House Judiciary Committee was for Democrats, you only have to read this report at POLITICO:
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler pushed to launch impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump during a closed-door meeting Wednesday, only to be rebuffed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, according to four sources familiar with the discussions.
Four (4!) different sources told the left-wing website that Nadler wanted several House committee chairs to begin drafting articles of impeaching against President Trump. Speaker Pelosi, however, begged to differ. In fact, she apparently called the idea “premature.”
What differentiates Pelosi from other Democratic hacks does not have anything to do with principles or ethics. No, Pelosi simply believes that trying to impeach Trump is an empty gesture — since it won’t be supported by any Republicans — which will “cause a backlash against vulnerable Democrats in 2020.”
Pelosi, then, may very well be just as radical as her party’s most ardent liberals, but at least she understands this grand game of politics. Impeaching a president is extremely controversial. If voters believe that the impeachment procedures are initiated for political reasons only, it’ll cost the impeaching party support. And significantly so.
Yesterday, Democrats were hoping that Mueller would give them some juicy information — some aggressive statements — that they could use to back up their demand for impeachment. What happened, of course, was quite the opposite. Mueller made a fool of himself and proved that he has absolutely nothing on the president. No collusion, no obstruction of justice. As for everything else, Mueller didn’t even seem to know what was in the report that bears his name.
After this disastrous hearing (for Democrats, that is), Pelosi clearly has the wits to change tactics. The same cannot be said for Nadler who carries on as if Mueller gave him everything he had hoped for — and then some.
Let’s hope that a majority of Democrats do what Nadler wants them to. After all, they’ll blow up their party if they do. There is literally no reason whatsoever to impeach Trump and Americans know it. Initiating impeachment procedures will cost the Democrats dearly — not only Congress next year but also the presidential election.
